NOTES on HUGH ANDREW LAWTON
Sailed from Liverpool an the "SS Cepholonia" which sailed to Boston on 2nd April 1896. The only other sister of Hugh Andrew Lawton was Mary Andrew (Annie) Lawton born in 1866, but I cannot place her marriage to any John Broadbent or otherwise as yet.

- There is a record of a Second Wife of Hugonis Lawton being Buried at Mottram Churchyard in 1602spouse: Lawton, Mrs (~1530 - b1570)
- Mrs Lowton - England, Cheshire Parish Registers - Name: Lowton - Event Type: Burial - Event Date: 05 Dec 1602 - Event Place: Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire, England - Gender: Female - Spouse's Name: Hugonis LowtonThe Lawton?s did not appear in Saddleworth until the mid-1500?s, that we know. So where were they before that time? I just happened to be sent a book list of second-hand books from Dobson in Blackpool. He sends me one every 6 months. On scanning the list I happened to see one called ?The Extent of the Lordship of Longendale 1360? by Harrop, Booth and Harrop 2005, so I decided to buy the copy. On close reading I found one Henri de Lauton is mentioned in a presentment made in 1373 against Sir William de Carryngton, Lord of Longdendale, for various misdemeanours against many individuals and properties during his tenure of office, including the destruction of the messuage of one Henri de Lauton of Micklehurst, Tintwistle, amongst others. The bibliography noted the ?Chester County Court Indictment Roll 1354-1377? in which the case is fully explored, so I got a copy of that as well.
Micklehurst is south of, and just over the border from Saddleworth and tucked into a protrusion of Tintwistle westwards to the River Tame. At present Henry seems to be the earliest mention of a Lawton in the area which I have come across. The ?Extent? of 1360, although not mentioning tenants individually in Micklehurst, stated the annual rent which the ?joint free? tenants would have to pay the Lord.
Following on from that I extracted the Lawton?s documented from copies of Winifred Bowman?s notes of the Staley Rental 1397-1431, and we see Henri Lawton, Henri Lawton junior and a James Lawton although their area of residence cannot yet be deduced as the Staley Rental as a document has been missing since at least 1960.
I then obtained a copy of the 1408 Longdendale Rental from the British Library in which we see Henry Lawton senior and a William Lawton as tenants at Micklehurst , Tintwistle linking me back to the ?Indictment? in 1373.
To finish off we have a William Lawton, although as a tenant and resident of Ashton, as seen in the Assheton Rental of 1422.
It looks like we have a string of Lawton individuals, some probably the same individual appearing in sequential documents, living in Micklehurst/Tintwistle/Longdendale in the late 14th and into the early 15th centuries who are more than likely our ancestors. Mike Buckley of the SHS is in agreement with the interpretation and feels that I should probably find more connections with the Lawton?s in Mottram as Tintwistle is next door. It may well be that the Micklehurst bunch actually formed the origin of the Lawton?s in Mottram as well.
Sorry if that was a bit long-winded but at least you have it now. The problem now is finding any extant 15th and 16th century manuscripts to fill in the time gap.

The Reporter - 8th June 1872 - Obituary
Mr Israel LAWTON, the well known head of the Lawton family of vocalists, expired on Tuesday after a lingering illness. The deceased was in his 59th year. From his youth he had been remarkable as a singer. For a long time he was the leader of the choir of the New Connexion Chapel, and after the Christian Brethren separated from the former he was the leader of this choir of what is now known as the Christian Church. About the year 1846 a family of the name of HUTCHISON came over to this country from America, and attracted a good deal of attention by their singing of popular airs. The deceased often went to Manchester and other places to listen to this family of vocalists, and he was so captivated with them that he determined to follow their example, which he accordingly did. Several of his children were named after the American family, and as the deceased's children grew up they all gave signs of musical abilities. In the course of time the LAWTON family were known for miles around, their engagements being very numerous. The deceased was of a very amiable disposition, and as a natural consequence, he enjoyed the respect and acquaintance of a large circle of friends. The disease which hastened his death was bronchitis, a disorder which is very prevalent in this district. His eldest daughter, to whom he was much attached, came over from America a few weeks ago in order to minister to him in his declining days. His remains were interred in the New Connexion Chapel on Thursday, and were followed by a large number of relatives and friends. The choir of the Christian Church, assisted by Mr. John TAYLOR, at the request of the deceased, sung the 7th chapter of Job. The funeral service was performed by the Rev. John TAYLOR in a very impressive manner, and thus closed the grave over one that was highly esteemed in his day and generation.

- A stone covering the remains still exists and informs the reader - " The body of JAMES LAWTON of Newton, in the Parish of Manchester, Clerk, was Buried here the 4th day of September, Anno. Dom. 1702 - Also the body of SARAH, the Wife of JAMES LAWTON, Clerk, was buried here the 7th Day of November 1685"Will -
The Will of the reverend gentleman was proved at Chester by his executors, Daniel Milne, mercer, and John Wilde, parish clerk, both of Oldham, and is a most interesting document - The Estates at Lawton Fold, Count-Hill and Fullwood, were given by the testator to his three sons, JAMES, PHINEAS, and JOSEPH respectively. Three Score pounds were to be raised for the benefit of his daughter GRACE, wife of JOHN SYDALL, whilst her sister THEODOSIA received 5 shillings, a like sum being given to her husband, JOHN BUCKLEY, and similar small legacies were also bequeathed to their three children. The property at 'Lawton Fold', was saddled with an annual charge of four pounds, to be paid to the testator's (Second) wife, ANNE, during the term of her natural life. Her husband also conveyed to his wife, the lands at Mellor, in the County of Derby, which he had received as dower from her father at the time of their marriage. The testator, shortly before his death, added a codicil to his will by which he gave his "Great Black Cow to his loving wife ANNE, over and above the provision already made for her". Three days after the funeral an inventory of the goods and other personal estate late belonging to the deceased, was taken by Joseph Clegg, Robert Boardman, and John Jackson. The total value was estimated at $93.13s.1d.
Marriage Note
In 1703, the year following her husband's death, ANNE, his widow, married the executor, JOHN WILD, who for a long period of forty-two years held the position of Parish Clerk at Oldham Church. His death took place in May 1722, when in the 77th Year of his age.

Need to identify which James, died aged 80 at Stoneswood. This could be same James born at Stones, brother of Joseph.Burial - [date: 20 MAR 1836] [place: St. Chad's Saddleworth Churchyard.]
- (2019) - Further information has promted me to consider that this JAMES LAWTON could well have been the James that Married ROSE WHITELY and had two sons William & John at Thornley, Lydgate - It could well be that when wife ROSEY died in 1796 aged 36 years, this James now 38 years, re-married to Ann Maria Hudson in 1800 - This may account for Widow Ann Maria living next door to William & Sally in 1841 @ Delphspouse: Hudson, Ann Maria (~1769 - 1857)
I would have to verify the above from Delph Independent Marriage Records or perhaps the Death Certificate of James in 1840 to determine his age
- There was a James Lawton B: 1783 - William Lawton B: 1785 - Maria Lawton B: 1786 - Charles Lawton B: 1788 - All children of a James Lawton & Sarah his Wife of Delph. (NOTE: There was a James Lawton that married Sarah Shaw on the 30th October 1782 - possibly St. Chads of St. Thomas's
- This JAMES LAWTON (B:1785 - D: 1840) Must have been a wealthy individual, leaving his wife Ann Maria (Hudson) Lawton well provided for, as she was a woman of Independent Means in 1841 @ Delph and also an Annuitant in 1851 -
- Buried in grave with Hudson family, also Ann Maria his wife 1857 - However! there must have been some tragic events within this 'Lawton' Family, as it appears that only two daughters survived up to 1840 - that is daughter ELIZA LAWTON who married Widower WILLIAM HUDSON in 1835 and the other daughter MARY ANN LAWTON who also married Widower WILLIAM MURGATROYD in 1836 - It would appear that his Second Born daughter MATILDA LAWTON Born: 1806, died as an infant before 1810, as his Fourth Child, a daughter Born in 1810, was also named MATHILDA LAWTON - His only Son WILLIAM LAWTON who was Born in 1808 cannot be found in the 1841 Census, so it is presumed at this point in time that William also died as an infant at Delph before 1840. (Needs verification) - Fourth child MATILDA LAWTON gave Birth to an illigitimate child WILLIAM JACOBSON LEES or LAWTON in 1829 when she woulf have been aged about 19 years. This child is to be found with his Grand Mother ANN MARIA (HUDSON) LAWTON in the 1841 Census, his mother MATILDA cannot be located in 1841 and it is presumes she also passed away before 1841 leaving Grandmother Ann Maira to raise Grandson William.
James Lawton died at Delph in 1840 and his wife Ann Maria in 1857. There is a very poor headstone in Delph Wesleyan Chapel Graveyard, a small simple stone and simply carved, it has been fractured into 4 pieces and is just laid on the ground. James Lawton 1785-1840 and his wife Ann Maria 1785-1857 (They had five children, Four Girls and One Boy - Namely: Eliza, Matilda, William, Matilda, and Mary Ann.)
Having spent considerable time trying to locate and verify the Death of Son WILLIAM LAWTON without any success at this point in time (May 2016) - I decided not to persue this 'Lawton; family ancestry any further, as I am inclined to think that this 'Lawton' line became Extinct with the Death of JAMES LAWTON in 1840 at Delph, Saddleworth.- Baptism's of JAMES LAWTON of Saddleworth - 1755 - 1760 - None of the below seem to align with our James

- Query ! - Not sure about the parentage of this James Lawtonspouse: Lawton, Martha ? (1782 - 1865)
- In 1841 this James Lawton is aged 65 years and his wife Martha aged 55 years - Their three children are all aged below 20 years ( 18 - 15 - 14) - Which equates with James Lawton Fathering these three children when age about 45-47 years old. - Either this Janes Lawton was Married late in life to Martha, or it may be his second marriage, or there may have been several other children prior to the other three children. - Needs researching further!Occupation -

Son of Joseph (Clothier) & Hannah Lawton of Dobcross,. - There appear to be some Baptism Records missing from the Registers of St. Chad's Church, between the Years 1771 and 1777. - As a result I cannot find any record of the Baptism of this JAMES LAWTON - His parents Married in December 1776 - So by my mathematics this James may well have been born around October 1777. - As his Sister, Elizabeth was born 12 months later in October 1778.Burial - [date: 04 AUG 1797] [place: Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.]

- NOTES: - Several anomalies arise regards this James Lawton & wife Nancy Knott.spouse: Knott, Nancy (1788 - 1858)
1./ Their son John B; 1816 - Need to verify this birth or baptism and death.
2./ There is then a 5 year gap between the birth of then next child John II in 1821
3./ Then another 6 year gap between the birth of John & Major.
4./ Then another 6 year gap between the birth of Ann and Robert.
Makes one wonder if there were two 'James & Nancy' producing children at this time period.
Possibly got the wrong parents for this James Lawton, it seems more likely that this James was the son of John Lawton & Ann Penny
This James Lawton may be related to the family of George Lawton (Woollen Manufacturer) of Vale Mills at Micklehurst.
In the 1841 Census James is recorded aged 60 (Rounded), this would put his birth at 1781.
In the 1851 Census - James is recorded as 69 years of age which would put his birth at 1782...also his age at his death in 1855 was 73 years which corresponds with 1782 as his birth date. Whereas James the son of John Lawton & Hannah Winterbottom was born and Baptised in 1780 - some two years earlier.Occupation -
