Generation No. 2

2. GEORGE2 LAWTON (JOHN1) was born 10 Mar 1828 in Huddersfield, Yorks, England, and died 10 Feb 1893. He married ALICE BROOKS 30 Jul 1849 in St Michael's Church, Motram, Lancashire, England, daughter of WILLIAM BROOKES and SARAH BOLD. She was born 22 Sep 1828 in Dukinfield, Hyde, Cheshire, England, and died 07 Dec 1882 in Camden, Camden, NJ.

Notes for GEORGE LAWTON:
In 1860 George's wife was named Harriett, age 28, and they had only Oliver who was 4. In 1870 George's wife was Alice, age 41, and they had three children, Oliver 14, Sarah 9, and Harry 6. Harriett and Alice may have been the same person, but probably not as there was a three year age difference as well as a different name. The 1860 census may well be the wrong George even though he has the son Oliver who is the right age.

Death Note

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 23rd August 1963.

"Grannie" LAWTON dies ..... 100 years old.

Affectionately known as "Grannie" in Saddleworth, 100 year old Mrs Mary LAWTON died on Monday morning as she would have wished ... at the Primrose Bank, Greenfield, home, where she has spent most of her life. "She suffered no pain, and passed away quietly," said a neighbour. "She was a really grand old lady, and we are all going to miss her".

It was on June 1st, 1863, that Mrs LAWTON was born at Hey Top, Greenfield. Then, only her family were present to greet her; but 100 years later well-wishers queued to see the remarkable old lady whose life-span stretched back to the Battle of Gettysburg.

Mrs LAWTON, who has lived under six monarchs, has also seen the assassination of Abraham LINCOLN in 1865, the abolition of slavery in America, Disraeli as prime minister, the death of Doctor Livingstone, the invention of the telephone in 1876, and Queen Victoria's Jubilee when she was 27.

"Hard work and plenty of it" was Grannie's key to a long life. A member of the SAVILLE family at Hey Top, she married at 19 and had eight children before retiring from mill work.

Still living are her daughter Nan, with whom she lived; Alice, who has spent 40 years in Victoria, Australia; Fred, who lived in Dacres Drive, Greenfield, and the eldest of the family, James, a retired miller, of Queensway, also in Greenfield. Until a few years ago, when she had a fall, Mrs LAWTON used to go out regularly on her own, and towards the end of her life she liked nothing better than a chat with friends about "the good old days".

A telegram from the Queen was among many messages of congratulation she received on her hundredth birthday.
