- Burial Register - Name: Martha LAWTON - Buried Date: 3rd November 1836 - Aged 44 - Place: Mottram in Longdendale - Description: St Michael & All Angels Curchyard - Grave No. 552 - Denomination: Anglican - County code: CHSBurial Register - Name: Martha LAWTON - Buried Date: 3rd November 1836 - Aged 44 - Place: Mottram in Longdendale - Description: St Michael & All Angels Curchyard - Grave No. 552 - Denomination: Anglican - County code: CHS
- Martha Shaw was married to Hugh Lawton in Mottram in Longendale Parish, Cheshire England on November 5th. 1810; witnessed by George Lawton and Joseph Tinker, the marriage was performed by James Turner, Vicar. - Martha was of the same parish and born about 1792. We believe she must have died about November of 1836, leaving Hugh and 9 children. We know Hugh was a widower in the 1841 census, living in Stayley, Mottram in Longendale, Cheshire.
Does anyone have an idea who Martha's parents were, or any other pertinent information? - Martha (Shaw) Lawton was buried in Grave No. 552 in Mottram Churchyard, Also buried in the same Grave No. 552 on 15th December 1850 was Elizabeth Ann Shaw aged 8 months of Micklehurst. (Further research required to determine the parents and family of Elizabeth Ann Shaw) - (Tameside Registrar 2008)
Hi, Trevor - I checked on Cheshire BMD and the baby who died in December was the daughter of Jane Shaw, unmarried, of Dukinfield, not Micklehurst. The reference is 1850-DUK/19/229. - Kind regards - Josie (Tameside Registrar)
Hi, Trevor - Elizabeth Ann Shaw died at Hollins Street, there is no occupation recorded for her mother. The informant was Ammon Shaw in attendance of Grosvenor Street, Dukinfield, which is actually in Castle Hall area of Stalybridge. -

Conjecture regards the marriage date of Joseph & Mary Shaw - IGI Records show the couple married on the 3rd January 1799, whilst sources from Mottram Church records have the 31st July 1799 as the date of marriage. Also it would seem their first child George son of Joseph Lawton of 'Lane' (Clothier) by Mary, baptised at St. George's Church, Mossley, on 11th July 1799 may indicate that the January marriage date was more likely.spouse: Lawton, Joseph (1774 - 1803)
In the Will of George Lawton of 'Lane' Stayley dated 1827. He left an inheritance to his Daughter-in-Law MARY LAWTON and her children, his three Grandchildren namely GEORGE LAWTON, BETTY SCHOFIELD and ANN LAWTON - It would therefore seem to follow that GEORGE LAWTON who made his will 1827 and died 11th November 1828 and Buried at St. Georges Churchyard at Mossley on 14th November 1828 was the father of JOSEPH LAWTON who married Mary Shaw. The Will of George Lawton makes reference to his only surving son JONATHAN LAWTON of Lane, who was main beneficiary.Birth Note
- There was a MARY SHAW who was Baptised on 25th December 1777 - The Daughter of Jonathan Shaw (Clothier) and his wife Betty of Moorgate, Heyheads, Stayley.
