- The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 12th January 1924.

Death of Mr Harold LAWTON - A very well known resident of Uppermill died on Wednesday afternoon in Mr Harold LAWTON. The son of the late Mr James LAWTON, of St Chad's, he was one of the last of the band of workers who made the name Shaw famous in Church and Hall building in the middle of the last century. He worked in the joinery department and did a great deal of carved work. He was one of the oldest of the congregation of the Uppermill Congregational Church, a staunch Rechabite and Freemason, following worthily in the steps of his father. He has been connected with the Uppermill Mechanics Institute almost since its formation

LAWTON Harold - Born: Mossley, Hartshead, Lancashire. - Tameside - 1852-HAR/18/2

Harold Lawton (1852-1916) - Majority shareholder of Lawton Mills. Harold decided to build a new factory in Plainfield, Connecticutt, because the town was " the geographic center of manufacturing". Born in England, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 21 "with little money, but with ambition and a great deal of energy".

He worked as an overseer at Gladding Mill in Moosup and later as superintendent and manager of Baltic Mills in Sprague.

In 1900 Harold & GEORGIANNA Lawton are in the 7th ward of Providence R.I. Again Harold is enumerated as coming over circa 1872.
Both should be married in 1880 but I'm not readily finding them on the census.

Plainfield, Connecticutt is where in 1910 we find a Harold (57) & GEORGIANNA (53) Lawton. Harold enumerated as born England and coming over to America circa 1872. (Aged 21 years)

A Note for Charles ALMY family. In 1870 Charles Almy & wife Ellen are in Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticutt.

In 1880 Tilton, Belknap County, New Hampshire residing in a hotel or rooming house. ( The Almy family were Woollen & Cotton Mill Owners in Moosup)

Addie LAWTON Female - Married W age 24 - Born: CT

On both the 1900 & 1910 Census - Harold Lawton was associated with cotton manufacturing.

From Leo Lawton: US Federal Census reports for 1880 -1930 found the following.

1880 Tilton, Belknap, New Hampshire
Lawton, Harold - age 29 - Born:. England as were both of his parents. He worked in cotton manufacturing. Wife 'Addie' age 24 and born in Connecticut as were both of her parents. They lived in a rooming house of some sort. Information probably given by someone other than them, and ages and her father's birth place probably wrong.

In the United States the 1890 Federal Census is practically non-existant as it was largely burned in a fire (what else), and the remaining bits have no Lawtons in them.

On the 5th June 1900 at Arch Street, Providence, Providence, Rhode Island

Lawton, Harold 46 dob May 1854 b. Eng Eng Eng cotton mfg married 26 years
Wife - Georgianna - age 43 - Date of Birth: Apr 1857 - Born:. Connecticutt - Father Born: Vermont - Mother Born: Connecticutt - 1 child born - 0 child living

Because the month and year of birth are given, this is probably true and given by one of them. Assuming that to be true, then her father was probably born in Vermont, rather than CT as stated twenty years previous.

On the 21st April 1910 @ Plainfield, Windham, CT

Lawton, Harold - age 57 - Born:. England - Father Born: England - Mother Born: England - Married 37 years
Wife - Georgianna - age 53 - Born: Connecticutt - Father Born: Vermont - Mother Born: Connecticutt - 0 children born, 0 children living

Both were on their first marriage, so Addie in 1880 is the same person as Georgianna. A guess would be that her child, that had been born previous to 1900, but non-existant in 1910, may have been stillborn, or only lived a very short time, and by 1910 she didn't bother to tell some nosy census reporter. In either case, she apparently had no children that survived to maturity.

On the 10th January 1920 @ Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticutt. (Harold Lawton had died 30th December 1916)

Lawton, Georgiana - age 62 - Widow - Born: Connecticutt - Father Born: Vermont - Mother Born: Connecticutt.

Successful career of a Mossley Man in America.

The "Fibre and Fabric", a paper devoted to a record of progress in American textile industries, published at Boston, in a recent issue gave a picture of a new mill which has just been built at Plainfield, Connecticut, and also a portrait and sketch of Mr Harold LAWTON, the treasurer of the new mill, which bears the name of the Lawton Mills Corporation.

Mr LAWTON is a native of Mossley, and previous to the Britannia Mill being burnt down in 1860 he worked there as a piecer. Shortly after the fire his father got work with Messrs Byrom, now at Delph, Droylsden and Ashton, who were just commencing cotton spinning in Oldham, where he and his family soon afterwards removed.

In early life Mr LAWTON went out to Canada, and with five cents in his pocket he commenced work in Montreal. By dint of perseverance he gradually rose step by step, until about 30 years ago he was placed in charge of the Gladding mill at Moosup. He is a mill man of large experience and acknowledged ability. He was the prime factor in the building of the Warwick Mills, of Centreville, Rhode Island, acting as general manager and agent of the company, which has had a large run of success.

More recently Mr LAWTON has been connected with the Baltic Mill, of which his cousin, Mr Samuel LAWTON, formerly of Mossley, is the general manager. Besides being an able mill man Mr LAWTON has always been a public spirited citizen and his removal to Plainfield, The Moosop Journal states, will be beneficial to the community, and therefore most welcome to all residents. The new mill will have a capacity of 30,000 spindles, and will give employment to about 300 persons. With an eye to the future the engine and boiler will be of a size sufficient for 50,000 spindles. It is intended later to extend the mill by 150 feet north , and the weaving shed 150 to the south. The produce of the mill will be fine combed cotton goods. A large reservoir with a capacity of 1,000,000 gallons of water is close to the mill. New houses are in course of erection in close proximity to the mill, and several new street have already been laid out. The directors of the mill are all well known experts in the cotton trade, and we feel sure that Mossley people will be pleased to hear of the success of a native of the town.

Death Note

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, 27th January 1917 - The late Mr Harold LAWTON - Mossley boy who made good in America.

An American journal publishes particulars of the death of a gentleman well known to many Mossley people in the person of Mr Harold LAWTON, of Plainfield, and previously of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, who passed away in hospital at New York, on December 30th 1916, following an operation, and was buried at Plainfield (R.I.) on the 2nd January 1917.

Mr LAWTON was born in Mossley, and was a son of Mr and Mrs John LAWTON, of a well known Saddleworth family of Quakers. He was born in 1852, and started work in the mill when eight years of age. He emigrated to Woonsocket in 1872, and became overlooker at Globe Mills there. He made several changes to advance himself, and was for several years manager of the Tilton Cotton Mills in New Hampshire. Subsequently he was manager of Lapham Mill, Centreville (R.I.), and afterwards was head of the Merchante Mill, Montreal. Later he was a prime factor in the building of Warwick Mills, Centreville, and acted as general manager and agent for the company for five years. In 1900 Mr LAWTON organised the Lawton Spinning Co. at Woonsocket, and was a director of the concern. He was for four years superintendent manager of the Baltic Mills, and became a director of the Centreville National Bank, the Warwick Savings Institute, and the Centreville Savings Bank. In 1905 he built the Lawton Mills at Plainfield, the concern having 30,000 spindles and ?400,000 capital. He was made president of the Central Worsted Co.

He was married a year after going out to the States, and is survived by his widow , but had no family. Two brothers and two sisters of deceased reside in this country, three of the family living in Oldham. His parents are both buried in Oldham. Mr LAWTON had paid visits to his relations in the old country, and was held in high esteem both here and in the States.

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, 17th March 1917 - Marriage of two Mossley sisters.

On Thursday week, at Whittington Parish Church, Wales, Private Fred WOOD of the King's Liverpool Regiment, and who was very well known in Mossley, was married to Ada, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs J. R. DAY, of Station House, Micklehurst, the Rev. H. COWEN performing the ceremony. The bride was attired in a navy blue costume, with hat to match, and was attended by Miss Dorothy BOTT, of Oswestry. Private Ivan JONES was best man. The bridegroom, who is the second son of Mrs and the later Mr. Wm Radcliffe WOOD, and was formerly employed at Mossley Station in the goods department, left for France the day following. The happy couple, received a large number of useful and handsome presents.

On Saturday at the Wesleyan Chapel, Stamford Road, Mossley, Mr Harry LAWTON, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Thomas LAWTON, of Greenfield, and formerly of King Street, Micklehurst, was married to Dorothy Louisa Day, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph R. DAY, Station House, Micklehurst, the Rev. E. S. HARLAND performing the ceremony. Mr Robert LAWTON acted as best man, and the bridesmaid was Miss Mary GRINDON, of Macclesfield. A reception was held at the house of the bride's parents.
It was originally intended to have a double wedding, but owing to Private WOOD being unable to get leave the arrangement could not be carried out.

Tameside Birth Register Ref: 1883-STY/21/65

As you say, my Hannibal Lawton is there, and his son John, my great-great-grandfather - however, your data differs slightly from mine at that point. John Lawton marries Jane Ann (Hindle) and, as my grandmother recollects, had two children - Betty (my grandmother's 'Aunt Betsey') and her father Harry Hargreaves Lawton, who you list under separate parentage. Harry's middle name was Jane Ann's mother's maiden name. Betsey never married, but Harry Hargreaves married an Eleanor Bainbridge and they had two children - Eleanor (my grandmother - still going strong at 96!), and Kathleen.

- Daughter of John & Mary (Whitehead) Lawton of Wood Lane, Dobcross.

I can take this family back another generation. Helen LAWTON, who married Joseph HOLDEN in 1735 was one of the several children of John LAWTON and Mary WHITEHEAD, who married at St. Chad's, Saddleworth 1st September 1704. Helen was buried 26 December 1742 and predeceased her father. Her son, John HOLDEN, was baptised at St. Chad's 21 January 1739.

John LAWTON was not a wealthy man when he died. Perhaps his money had nearly all been spent on his two wives and his nine children! In his 1745 will, he bequeathed sixpence to his grandson John HOLDEN.

NOTES on HENRY ANDREW LAWTON - (1794 - 1869)

Father purported to be Adam Lawton or Andrew (Maybe Father's Surname was ANDREW and Mother's Maiden Name: LAWTON)

Possible the family lived in the Hattersley area initially, as ANN LAWTON by the first marriage was born in Hattersley and it would seem the first couple of children from the second marriage to Betty Holgate were also born in Hattersley. This may reflect on the families association with the BLOMILEY family who also lived in the same area before emigrating to America.

It would appear that the whole family emigrated to America about 1849, and settled as 'Farmers' at La Grange, Walworth County, Wisconsin. (I have yet to account for their first born son JOHN LAWTON, who doesn't appear to have settled in Wisconsin, or perhaps remained in England.

This is the family in 1850 US Census at: La Grange, Walworth County, Wisconsin, Iowa. . Enumerated as Harry A. Lawton 56, Betsey A. (looks more like Betty) 56, Samuel 24, Squire 16, Lucius 14, Hannah 22. All born Eng. NARA film pg 373B.

And still in the same place in 1860 indexed on Heritage Quest as H.A. LANTON, (on Ancestry as HET LANTON) H.A. 67, Betty 67, Samuel 35, Squire 24 and Samuel MUMFORD G/son age 10, Wisconsin. NARA film pg 402A.

I did not find the sr. Mr. Lawton on the 1870 Wisconsin mortality schedules which is supposed to reflect all household deaths one year prior to the official start date.

There seems to some connection of this family to a HARRIET HARRIS Born: 1818, as in the 1870 US Census, Emma Lawton aged 4 years is to be found at the household where Harriet Harris aged 52 resides as head, and also in 1900 US Census, this Harriet Harris now aged 82 is to be found in the household of JAMES HOWARD LAWTON and his wife ELLEN, it could well be that James & Ellen asl had a daughter Emma, as well as Squire. (Need to verify). This Harriet Harris is found at La Grange, Wisconsin in 1880 - See Below --

This 'HERBERT LAWTON' is not a child of Edward & Hannah. More likely the illigitimate child of one of Edwards brothers by a Miss Wrigley of Saddleworth. (Oldham Registry confirmed that Edward was not the father)

Edward Lawton definately married Hannah Maria Hollingworth in 1860 at Mossley Christian Church, and yet son Herbert Lawton ir recorded in the 1861 Census as being 4 years of age living with parents Herbert & Hannah at Chapel Street, Mossley. - Also in the Lancashire BMD Records of Saddleworth the Mothers Maiden Name of WRIGLEY is recorded in the Birth Register ( So this Herbert Lawton was born before Edward & Hannah were married.

- NOTES: - A DESCRIPTION of MOSSLEY TOWNSHIP
------------------------------------------------------------------

The town of Mossley is situated in the three Counties of, Yorkshire (West Riding), Lancashire, and Cheshire. The River Tame being the boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire; the boundary between Yorkshire and Lancashire is the small brook which runs under Brookbottom and down Brookfields, entering the River Tame opposite Milton Mill.

The Mossley Coat of Arms shows three square divisions on the top portion of the shield. The centre division contains a Wheatsheaf of Barley and denotes that part of Mossley which is in Cheshire. The two side divisions show the Red Rose of Lancashire and the White Rose of Yorkshire.

The centre lower space of the Shield is filled with a Cotton Plant, which represents the chief industry of the town in 1885 when Mossley first became a Borough. The wavy lines across the back centre, indicate the River Tame. The Latin motto "Floret qui laborat" means 'He flourishes who labours'.

In the very early days Mossley was included in the Manor of Ashton and had no separate existence. In 1864 however, the Local Government Act was passed and Mossley was allowed its own Local Board of Commissioners, who made great improvements in the paving, flagging and draining of the place. Still, its geographical position gave rise to many difficulties of administration and great inconvenience to the people. No place with a population of less than 20,000 people was allowed its own Police Force. There were therefore three different Police authorities. An offender in the Lancashire part of town would be taken to Ashton-under-lyne by the Lancashire police. Those who lived in Yorkshire would be hauled before the magistrates in Wool Road, Dobcross, Saddleworth. Whilst the town of Hyde in Cheshire was the nearest Court for the "Cheshire Cats" on the Micklehurst side of the River Tame. The same confusion and inconvenience arose with the regard to the registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Mr. Herford Lawton of Micklehurst in a letter to his daughter Ruth writes:

"In my own case, although living in Cheshire, I had to give notice of my intended marriage, not to Hyde, but to Ashton Parish, which, for parochial purposes, had control over both Lancashire and Cheshire. On behalf of your mother who lived in the Yorkshire portion, I had to go to Saddleworth Parish, which meant two journeys of Four miles to the left and then Three miles to the right."

And of course at that time there was no transport. The first wedding recorded at St. George's Parish Church was in 1859, though the first burial on record was in 1761. 'Just think of it'!, Having to walk to your wedding three or four miles there and the same distance back. One imagines that the Bride, at least, must have cast an anxious eye on the weather.

Three Police forces, three members of Parliament, three County Council Authorities, and three separate County excise rates. The rates in Saddleworth Yorks; being very low, the burden fell on those people living in Lancashire and Cheshire. In Yorkshire too, children were allowed to work 'Full-time' at an earlier age than in the other two counties. Mossley decided to petition Queen Victoria for incorporation as a 'Borough', although, with only 13,000 inhabitants, the town would possibly be the smallest Borough in the country.

"Considering the peculiar, indeed unique position of the situation", Sir Charles Dilke, for the Home Office, promised no opposition to the Bill, and on March 13th 1885, the Charter of Incorporation was granted and our short history as a separate Borough began.

In November 1971 the Government announced its plans for Local Government Reorganisation; From April 1974, Mossley was to join with; Ashton-under-lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droyslden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Stalybridge and Longdendale to form the new Borough of Tameside in the Metropolitan County of Manchester.
