Named in brother John Lawton's Will - I allsoe give and bequeath unto my Son JOSEPH, one great Ark, standing in JONATHAN LAWTON my Brothers Chamber.

- * I think I have the wrong JOSIAH below- and it should be the Josiah that married Alice not Mary Scholefield

BULLS HEAD INN, at Woods Lane, Dobcross, Saddleworth.

Jonathon Lawton was joint benefactor of father Josiah Lawton Last Will and Testament of 24th May 1727 along with elder brother John Lawton. When John Lawton died in 1728, brothers Josiah & Joseph were named executors of his Will and brother Jonathan is only referred to once as living with brother JOHN Lawton (my brothers chamber)

In 1722, Jonathon Lawton, a clothier, (son of Josiah Lawton) married Ann Buckley and by 1760 he had obtained a licence for an Inn. Jonathon died in 1771 and his will mentions 'two very good new houses' with a brewhouse, which were presumably built to replace his original Inn around 1769. - Ann (Buckley) Lawton is listed as licensee of the Bulls head in the 1773 alehouse records, and by 1785, Joseph Buckley (perhaps a relative of Ann) had taken over. - After Mr. Joseph Buckley died in 1797, the house was then occupied by a surgeon named John Kenworthy. The impressive double-fronted house built by Jonathon Lawton can still be seen on Woods Lane, Dobcross.

The Memorial Inscription on the Gravestone of Grave No. ??? in the Old Graveyard adjoining St. Chad's Saddleworth Church reads:

Here was interred the body of Elizabeth Lawton, Daughter of Josiah Lawton late of The Bulls Head Inn at Dobcross, who departed this life March 27th 1770 in the ??st. year of her age.
Also of Alice his wife who departed this life January 9th 1799 in the 61st year of her age.

Also Mary their daughter who departed this life June 18th 1799 in the 35th year of her age.

1891 Census - 1891 - Aged 66 (Caretaker) at No.50 Little King Street, Birmingham.

1851 - Single aged 25 (Woollen Cloth Finisher) at Delph, lodging with James Rhodes (46) and his wife Esther (Lawton) Rhodes (40) and her step-son Josiah Sykes. - This Esther is undoubtedly the sister of Josiah and the daughter of Josiah Lawton and Sarah Buckley who first married William Sykes. Then as a young widow married James Rhodes - Query! - Could this JAMES RHODES be the brother of JOHN RHODES who married Pamela's elder sister JANE JERVIS in 1837 thus providing another link between this LAWTON family and the JERVIS/RHODES family.

Moved from Delph, Saddleworth to Vatch Mills, Stroud, Gloucestershire between 1859-1860 - Resided at: Far View Terrace, Spillmans, Rodborough, Gloucester, England.

St. Chad Parish Church, Saddleworth, Yorks;
Grave No. 1051. Lower Graveyard.

JOSIAH LAWTON (1824-1891)

Rank/Profession: Caretaker - Cause of Death: Chronic Bronchitis, Influenza
Informant: Josiah Lawton, son in attendance, 52 Little King Street, Birmingham.
Registered: @ Birmingham on 28th May 1891

spouse: Jervis, Pamela (1839 - 1912)
- m. 31 AUG 1857 in Rochdale, St. Chad's Parish Church.
NOTES:

I thought I had found the right JOSIAH with the marriage at St Chad's Church, Rochdale 31st August 1857 between Josiah LAWTON and Pamela JARVIS, as this Josiah's father was also Josiah. I still feel that this is the father and son who were living at Hillend in 1841, but as you will see it doesn't fit with him being the son who is buried in the grave at St Chad's lower yard in 1904.

Also Pamela who was much younger than her husband hasn't been honest with her age, she was born at Uppermill in 1839 (registered as Pamila JERVIS). This seems to cause problems with the Census ages, as they seem to have totally forgotten how old they both are, and what gap in age they had earlier decided !!!!

To make matters even more difficult on this first census Josiah was listed as Joshua !!

- LAWTON Thomas - Married - MAYHALL Hannah - @ Rochdale, St Chad's - Rochdale - 1843-CE11/7/216

- My mother was: Rhona Lawton 1922 (Oldham) - 2003

- My grandfather was Albert Lawton 1893 (Oldham) - 1967 married Annie Strafford

- My great grandfather was Thomas Lawton 1852 (Oldham) - 1919 married Mary Ann Newton 1854 (Larkhill Tongue) - 1908. They married in 1874 in Oldham. They had many children, my grandfather being the youngest.

- My great grandfather was Thomas Lawton 1823 or 1826 or 1828 (Milking Green near Lees) - ? married Hannah Mayall 1825 They married at St Chads in Rochdale on 8th October 1843. Their first child, William was born in 1842/3. Then they had John about 1845 who died before he was 5 and then they had Thomas whose birth date I cannot find for definite.

- I have the marriage certificate for Thomas Lawton and Hannah Mayall. At marriage both their addresses were Saddleworth. Thomas's father was an engineer called John Lawton. Hannah's father was Job Mayall, a weaver. Their witnesses were James Bostock and John Buckley. I have been wondering if John Lawton 1792-1857 who was married to Alice Buckley 1781-1861 because on 'Lawtons of Saddleworth' website a John Lawton has stepchildren called Buckley is father to Thomas.

Please can you help me to trace this part of my tree?

Thanks very much. Judith Brown

Firstly George Griffiths. I haven't yet managed to find out who he might be but after his death, the people of Totley held an evening of entertainment to raise funds for his widow Florence and two children. It was reported in several newspapers and I have enclosed the one that is the most detailed. The event was held under the patronage of two local big-wigs, William Aldam Milner J.P. of Totley Hall and Joshua Tyzack of Abbeydale Works, Beauchief who owned land and steel and scythe works in the area. It was good to see that the event was well attended by the railway "navvies" who were mostly experienced and skilled men who had worked on many large public construction projects - canals, railways, and reservoirs - before coming to Totley. They were relatively well paid for what was dangerous and unpleasant work so could afford to contribute to the fund raising. Incidentally, I have never heard of the Dore & Totley Christy Minstrels before - that's another one for the to-do list.

Hello Trevor

I have been trying to find out what became of Maud and Annie Griffiths between the time they left Whittington Moor Junior School in 1892 and their marriages in 1906 and 1908.

Their mother Florence Hall died on 16 October 1892 aged 27 and was buried at St. John the Evangelist Church, Newbold three days later. It would then appear that their step-father Frederick Hall decided to return to Derby. The family were living at Court 4 House 8, Walker Lane, when the two girls were admitted to the Orchard Lane Infants School on 13 April 1896. They stayed there only a few days but thankfully their school records have survived showing that they were previously educated at the Union School. This would probably have been the school attached to the Derby Union Workhouse.

By the time of the 1901 Census both girls had been adopted. Maud was the adopted daughter of Susannah Shaw and Arthur Earl and was living at 82 Queen Street, Swinton, Rotherham. Arthur was a trammer in a coal mine - that is to say he pushed wagons laden with coal along a tunnel in the mine. Annie was the adopted daughter of Alice Dawson and Charles Oliver and was living at 24 Albert Street, Swinton. Charles was a green grocer hawker, presumably selling his produce from a cart. The Olivers had previously lived in Chesterfield at the time the Florence and Frederick were in Whittington. So the story that Jack's mother was adopted is certainly true. I have not found a death for Frederick Hall but the fact that both girls were in Swinton suggests that he moved there from Derby.

Best wishes

Dorothy

Fred was already living in Fitzwilliam Street and the Law family were at number 28 in the 1911 Census when the first two of their children were born: Mary Kate in 1909 and Walter on 28 September 1910. spouse: Burrows, John (1882 - 1973)
- m. 04 JUN 1906 in St. James The Greater Church, Derby.

Marriage Note

Maud Griffiths married John Burrows at Holy Trinity Church, Derby on 4th June 1906. By 1911 John and Maud were living at Earl's Colne in Essex with daughter Margaret who had been born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1907. John Burrows was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1879 and was a foreman iron moulder in an engineering works. It would appear that John Burrows junior was born in 1921 in the registration district of St. Asaph, Denbighshire. He was aged two when he accompanied his sister and mother aboard the Hobsons Bay at London on 13 March 1923, bound for Freemantle.

I have not been able to trace Jack's grandfather, Steven Daniel Burrows either in Northern Ireland or in Great Britain. He appears to have been still alive on 4 June 1906 when John Burrows and Maud Griffiths were married. The parish register of Holy Trinity Church, Derby records his name as Stephen Burrows, an iron moulder. Nor have I yet been able to find out when John came to England. He gave an address of 68 Rushton Road, Bradford in 1906 and daughter Margaret was apparently born at Lapage Street, Bradford the following year but I have found nothing so far to link either of those addresses with the family name Burrows.

One has to wonder if this John Lawton was previously married before his marriage to Esther, as his daughter Emma Cooper Lawton was born about 1811 and her age is given as 30 years in 1841 and 40 years in 1851. Whereas second daughter Ellen is 10 years junior to Emma. Could it be that John's first wife's maiden name was Cooper and Emma was an issue of this marriage. He may well have married Esther at the later date around 1818 as Esther is was 20 years junior to husband John Lawton. Also it appears that John Lawton was a very virile fellow who went on sireing children up to 1845 when he would have been 70 years of age.

- NOTE: - Could this JOHN LAWTON be the son of Gervas (Jarvis) Lawton and Sarah Woolley born in Glossop Derbyshire in 1782. - As there was a Gervas Lawton who settled in Hyde Green, Besom Lane, also the name 'Wooley' was prominent in Millbrook
