There are records of a Dorothy Lawton who married John Buckley at St. Chad's, Rochdale on the 6th April 1809, In the 1841 Census this Dorothy is recorded as 'Dorothy Buckley' but in the 1851 Census she is recorded as a 'Spinster' - I am uncertain if this is another Dorothy Lawton as all recorded evidence regards the above Dorothy Lawton remained a Spinster throughout her lifetime.

A very dear friend Edith Lawton of Greenfield has been ill since June and sadly she passed away in the Royal Oldham Hospital yesterday. Edith used to visit us every Friday for an evening to listen to classical music of which she was extremely fond. We shall miss her very much indeed. She had no surviving next of kin and was being looked after by the Social Services with whom I have been keeping in touch over recent weeks. Edith (1921-2001) was the daughter of Wilfrid Lawton and his wife Martha, nee Hudson, and the grand-daughter of David Lawton (1851-1918) and his second wife Mary Sykes of Greenfield. David Lawton, J.P. was the author of several books including Webs from Fancy's Loom: Poems and Sketches (edited by Edwin Lawton and printed by the Co-operative Wholesale Soc. 1918). David who was born at Boarshurst, Greenfield, was the son of Edwin Lawton (born c. 1815 at Fairbanks) and his second wife Charlotte Schofield (born Hawkyard in 1817, daughter of James and Mary Schofield of Warlow Clough, Greenfield). Edwin and Charlotte married 31 Oct. 1847 at Rochdale.

Funny you should mention Edward Lawton. I just sent for the marriage certificate of Edward Lawton and Sarah Shaw. I expect to receive a scan of it in a few days.

There's also the birth of Asenath Lawton in 1846, perhaps Edward's daughter. I found "Assinel" Lawton on the 1851 census, probably with her Shaw grandparents. It's a very light copy and very hard to see. I also found Asenath Lawton (and Betty or Betsy Lawton) with aunt and uncle David and Harriet Shaw Hallas (indexed Allas) in 1861. Once I receive the marriage cert. and confirm that this Edward's father was Jonathan, I'll pursue information about Asenath and Betsy a little more, as well as Edward. I don't see an age appropriate death for Edward Lawton on the Cheshire BMD. There are several potential Edward Lawton's on the various census records but none that I can conclusively determine is the right one.

I'm still looking for Edward Lawton. On the 1851 census I found an Edw (that's the way you have to put it in) Lawton, age 23, as a lodger with John Bullock in Stoke, Staffordshire. The age is wrong, place of birth is wrong, listed as unmarried, etc. However, Edward Lawton's sister, Mary Lawton was married to Robert Bullock. Perhaps John Bullock was Mary's brother-in-law. Another curiosity, I was searching for Alice Lawton, born 1863, daughter of Robert Lawton, pawnbroker, trying to find out what happened to her after 1881. I couldn't find a death and/or a marriage that seemed to fit so I checked just for "Alice". In 1891 I found an Alice Chadwick, married to George Chadwick, pawnbroker's assistant. They also had a Joseph Lawton as a lodger. It turns out that George married an Alice Birch. Just thought these were interesting. Probably not the Lawton's I'm looking for, but interesting.

As in the 1841 Census this Edward (Ned) Lawton (Clothier) a Batchelor, aged 30 is to be found living with his younger Sister Betty Lawton (Milliner/Dressmaker) Spinster, aged 25, Living at Broad Ing, Almondbury, Nr. Holmfirth in Yorkshire. - However! In the 1851 Census, Betty Lawton is to be found back over the 'Pennines' living with her Widowed Father: George and her Sister: Sarah Lawton (Both Spinsters). Up to now I cannot find this NED in the 1851 Census...But it would appear that this Ned Lawton married between the years 1841 and 1855. As by the 1861 Census Ned and his second wife Mary Taylor are to be found in Toxteth Park, Liverpool and the Marriage Register at St. John;s Church, Liverpool, records Edward (Ned) Lawton as being a Widower, when he married Mary Taylor (Spinster) in September 1855 - In the 1816 Census our Ned is recorded as a 'COACH AGENT' which could be similar to a Taxi Driver today, He is living at No.119 Grafton Street, with wife Mary (Taylor) Lawton, but no children - But by the 1871 Census, Wife Mary Taylor must have died, as our Ned is on his own again, a Widower, and head of household, at Collyhurst Road in Manchester, and living with him is his Younger Spinster Sister Sarah (Lawton) Howard, Widow of the late Jonathan Howard - Ned is occupied now as an Overlooker in a Quarry. - By 1881 Census our Ned is still on his own, now a 'Blacking Maker' lodging with a Hannah Douglas at St. Oswald Street, in Manchester and it would appear that this EDWARD (NED) LAWTON ended his day's in 1889 at Prestwich, Manchester, - I have been unable to establish as yet his first marriage or if there was any issue from that marriage. But there are no records to support the fact that this Ned Lawton had any children.

- Father: George Lawton and Mother Mary are to be found at Stonebreaks at Springhead in Saddleworth in 1841 - But not Edward (Ned) or sister Betty, they were at Broad Ing, Austonbury, Nr. Holmfirth in Yorlshire

- Struggling to find this Edward (Ned) Lawton in 1851 - Seems that he must have married between the 1841 Census when in Almondbury, and the 1861 Census when he married a second time to Mary Taylor. - The Liverpool Marriage register records him as a 'Widower' - so I need to find his first marriage and the death of his first wife between the years 1841 to 1855.

"Bright and early on Tuesday morning, August 17, 1894, Bermuda donned her festive attire to celebrate the union of Miss Cora Prudhomme, daughter of one of the most esteemed gentlement of the parish, to Dr. Edward G. Lawton. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Durier, promptly at 2 o'clock, who made a most touching and appropriate address.

"The bride, preceded by her maid of honor and five bridesmaids, was a marvel of sweetness and grace. She wore a heavy bodice and long pearl fringes from around the slightly pointed neck fell to the waist, her long veil was gracefully draped with orange blossoms, and she carried a bouquet of white rosebuds, smilax and maiden-hair ferns -- which was beautiful and was ordered by the groom from New Orleans. Her maid of honor, Miss Lallah Prudhomme, wore pink organdy over pink satin, and was almost an ideal representation of a warm blush rose. Her bridesmaids were dressed alike, white organdy over white satin slip, trimmed with pink baby ribbon, with the exception of Miss May Breazeale, who wore lavender ribbons. They came in the following order: Miss Lallah Prudhomme [her sister], Mr. S. H. Hill; Miss [Susanne] Lise Prudhomme [1st cousin] and Dr. Samuel Scruggs; Miss Mimi Locoul [2nd cousin] and Mr. D[rury]. W[ood]. Breazeale [1st cousin]; Miss May Breazeale and Mr. E. C. Prudhomme [brother]; Miss Lou Hyams and Dr. J. S. Stephens, Jr.; Miss Cecelia Prudhomme and Mr. Gaiennie Hyams.

"The wedding was a private one, limited to the aunts, uncles, first cousins and witnesses, numbering about forty or fifty. Among them were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hyams, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Porter, Mr. and Mrs. Filbert Cloutier, Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Prudhomme, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Breazeale, Jr. [1st cousin], Mrs. E[mile]. Locoul, of New Orleans, Mr. and Mrs. Lamy Chopin, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Hertzog, Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Hertzog, Mr. Adolphe Prudhomme, and Miss Amice Metoyer, H. B. Metoyer, Serdot Prudhomme and Placide Prudhomme.

"After the ceremony the guests repaired to the dining room, where they were served a sumptious repast; the tables were beautifully decorated and the cakes were simply 'too pretty to eat' -- the bride's cake and nougat especially were works of art. The bride's and groom's health were drunk in sparkling champagne and amid the popping of corks several well rendered toasts were given. Messrs. Breda, Henry Hyams, L. Caspari, and Upshur Breazeale gave especially eloquent ones, and expressed sentiments which were heartily echoed by every guest.

"At 5 p.m. the bride, dressed very tastefully in light green serge, trimmed with darker braid, with hat and gloves to match, left the home of her girlhood to begin her life-long voyage with the man she has chosen, her bridesmaids and groomsmen escored her to Cypress and saw her on the train for Shreveport whence she will start on her bridal tour, visiting Northern cities.

"Never were a young couple united under brighter skies; with fairer prospects for the future. Heaven itself has showered upon them her best gifts -- youth, beauty, healthy, and wealth are gtheirs. Ah, fair young bride, and manly groom, may all your days seem ever bright and fair as this one; may your future which seems so bright and promising today never be marred by even one little cloud; long may you walk together hand in hand the pathway upon which you ahve entered, amy the wayside be lined with roses, shorn of every thorn, and may heaven continue through life to bless you with all her choicest blessings, is the wish of one who knows you well and loves you."

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, October 17th, 1908 - A Greenfield wedding.

On Saturday morning in the Greenfield Wesleyan Chapel, the marriage of Mr Edwin LAWTON, eldest son of Mr David LAWTON, of Spring Grove, and Miss Helena LAYCOCK, daughter of the late Mr Henry LAYCOCK, was solemnised, the Rev. Henry SCHOFIELD, superintendent minister conducted the service. The bridesmaid was Miss Stella WINTERBOTTOM B.A., of St Helen's, and the best man Mr Enoch LAYCOCK. The bride was given away by her mother, Mrs LAYCOCK. After the ceremony there was a reception at Fernlea Vale, the house of the bride. In the afternoon, Mr and Mrs Edwin LAWTON left for London on their wedding trip. On their return they will reside in Bristol Avenue, Levenshulme. The young couple have received many valuable and useful presents, and have the best wishes of a large circle for their future welfare.
