Marriage Note

- St Chad's Church, Rochdale - Marriage Register : - Page: 84 - Record 168 - 30th August 1848 - Samuel WOOD - 27 - Bachelor - Blacksmith - living Saddleworth - father James WOOD - Fuller and Esther LAWTON - 21 - Spinster - living Saddleworth - father James LAWTON - Weaver. By banns. Both signed with a X. Witnesses were Joseph LAWTON (X) and Serena BRADBURY (X).

I also got details of James Thomas Lawton's baptism, which is attached. His mother Esther Ann is from Knowl Top so it looks like she is the daughter of Joseph. I now think that the vicar made a mistake when filling in the marriage certificate and put father James instead of Joseph, Samuel WOOD's father was James and maybe he got mixed up.

Serena Bradbury is to be found at the Cotton Tree Inn, Hole House, Ridding, at Royal George in both the 1841 and the 1851 Census, Daughter of John & Martha Bradbury (Publicans) (The Cotton Tree Inn later was renamed 'The Royal George')

this information conflicts with the fact that I have JOHN LAWTON's Father as JOHN and not JAMES. - Question: Hane I made an error, or is the marriage information wrong. - Needs researching and verifying.

1841 Census - Aged 7 at Woodbrook, Stonebreaks.
1851 Census - Aged 18 (Cotton Piecer) at Woodbrook, Stonebreaks, Saddleworth. -
1861 Census - No.33 Hey, Lees, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. - Moved to Chadderton, Oldham. about 1864
1871 Census - Aged 36 (Cotton Spinner Overlooker) @ Mill Street, Failsworth, Oldham, Lancashire

- 1800 Wife Margaret (Andrew) Lawton Died aged 47 years @ Lees, Nr. Oldham.

In the 1871 UK Census this Josiah Lawton and all his family are to be found living at Mill Street, Failsworth. where in 1873 a further daughter Catherine Elizabeth was born. But with the Death of wife Margaret @ Lees, in July 1880 the family seems to have become fragmented, and only daughter Emma Lawton who married James Carter can be found in the 1881 Uk Census living @ No.421 Middleton Road, Chadderton, Oldham. - Then this 'Josiah Lawton' seems to have 'dissapeared' for 30 years, and can only be found again in the 1901 UK Census, when he was located under the name 'Joseph Lawton' age 67, Father-in-Law, living with daughter Emma Carter and husband James Carter @ No.51 Bolton Street, Oldham, Lancashire. - It is highly likely that Josiah Lawton and several of children emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, USA, around 1881, with Josiah deciding to return home to England to spend his final years, as he died on the 5th July 1904 aged 70 years, and was Buried in St. Chad's Church Graveyard in Saddleworth. - Perhaps Josiah returned to England to be with his son Hugh Andrew Lawton who died at the age of 30 and was buried on the 5th July 1900 @ Greenacres Cemetery. - Having extensively searched the 1881 England Census returns, with many connotations of the names, I cannot find either Josiah Lawton or any of his other children, only Emma.

- Done extensive research on the 1881 Census to no avail as I still cannot locate this Josiah Lawton - Also tried 'Joseph' as he is recorded under that name in subsequent Census returns - 'Keep Trying"

- With exception of Emma (Lawton) Carter - B: 1857 - After hours of extensive searching all available records, including Immigration and Passenger List's along with respective USA Census returns. I cannot find any records for this Josiah Lawton, ot for his children Mary Annie, John Andrew, Hugh Andrew, or Catherine Elizabeth Lawton in 1881 or between 1871 and 1891. - Both his Son's, John Andrew Lawton and Hugh Andrew Lawton and Daughter Catherine Elizabeth Lawton re-appear in the 1891 England Census, but Josiah himself does not return until the 1901 England Census, but the years inbetween remain a 'Blank' at this particular time (2015) - Perhaps, in the near future, someone may discover where they may have been. - But I am declaring defeat and moving on!

Death Note

- NOTE: - I emailed Oldham Register Office about the death of Josiah in 1904 and I got these replies.

Dear Alison,

I have located the entry for Josiah Lawton in our records Ref: 1904-OAT/116/82. The date of death was the day before 5th July and he was a couple of years younger than 72 yrs. Do you have the address he would have been living at, at that time together with any children's names who could have registered the death? This will help to determine if this is the correct entry.

Although his daughter registered the death her name was not Eliza Mary and the address is not Waverley Street. So this could possibly be the incorrect entry.

***************
I then decided to telephone Stan Cowburn and see what he could tell me was in the burial book, he rang me back this morning.

He said that Josiah LAWTON was buried on the 7th July 1904, he was aged 70, and he lived at 19 Regent Street, Oldham but was buried from the workhouse. He also said that he is buried in grave 1021, not 1051. - I will now see if I can get confirmation from the Oldham Register Office with this new address.

- Mother Florence Hall died on 16 October 1892 aged 27 and was buried at St. John the Evangelist Church, Newbold three days later. It would then appear that their step-father Frederick Hall decided to return to Derby. The family were living at Court 4 House 8, Walker Lane, when the two girls were admitted to the Orchard Lane Infants School on 13 April 1896. They stayed there only a few days but thankfully their school records have survived showing that they were previously educated at the Union School. This would probably have been the school attached to the Derby Union Workhouse.

Death Note

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, March 30, 1912 - Sudden death of Mr Lees WORRALL, of Mossley.

We regret to announce the death of Mr Lees WORRALL, who kept a poultry farm at Intake, Micklehurst, last Saturday, at the age of 46 years. The deceased was the second son of the late Mr Thomas WORRALL, of Manchester Road, and was well known and very much esteemed. After coming into the house last Saturday after attending to his work on the farm he complained of illness, and as he gradually got worse Dr HEELEY was called in, but he gave no hope of his recovery, as he had unfortunately had a stroke and a blood vessel had broken upon his brain. Death took place in the short space of a few hours.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, when his remains were interred at the Mossley Cemetery. Messrs Jack RADCLIFFE, R.T. LAWTON, H. LAWTON, F. LAWTON and A. NORMINGTON acted bearers.
The mourners, who were conveyed in three coaches included:
1st coach - Mrs Lees WORRALL (widow), Miss Bertha WORRALL, Mr and Mrs Nelson WHITELEY and son, Mr and Mrs John WORRALL.
2nd coach - Miss Rachel LEES, Mrs James LAWTON, Mr and Mrs Jack RADCLIFFE, Miss Ethel LAWTON and Miss Alice LAWTON.
3rd coach - Miss Alice LAWTON, Miss Katie LAWTON, Miss Clara LAWTON, Miss MOTTRAM and Miss Elsie MOTTRAM.
The Rev. T. W. HUNT, M.A., conducted a short service at the house, and also conducted the service at the cemetery. A number of beautiful floral emblems were placed on the grave.

- NOTES: - Daughter of James & Jane Worsnip of Mossley Brow, Hartshead, Mossley. - It seems almost certain that this Catherine died between the years 1815 -1822, perhaps after the birth of twins James & Israel. Husband James Lawton must have re-married to a Mary (unknown) aged between 35-40 years before 1841, as at the 1841 Census both Husband James and Wife Mary are aged 60 years living together at James Lawton's Houses on Mossley Brow, with married children Israel and James Jnr, living on both sides next door. (James Lawton's Houses were in close proximity to Mossley Railway Station on Mossley Brow)

Death Note

- I have checked every page of the Burial Register of St. George's Parish Church @ Mossley, from January 1813 throught to 1833 and found no record of Catherine Lawton's Burial there. So she may have died earlier between 1813 and 1824 - Need to check these records.!! - There is only ONE Catherine Lawton recorded in the entire Burial Register - That of Catherine Lawton of Earnshaw Lane, Stayley who died a Widow in 1822 aged 75 years.

- It could well be that this Catherine Lawton was Buried in the grounds of Market Street, Methodist Chapel and not St. George's
