The Reporter - 29th July 1938.
Greenfield Golden Wedding.
Mr and Mrs Albert LAWTON's celebrations.
Mr and Mrs Albert LAWTON of 6, Wellington Terrace, Greenfield, celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday, when they entertained a good number of relatives and friends. They were the recipients of many gifts and a host of beautiful flowers.
Mr and Mrs LAWTON were married at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, by the vicar, Rev. H. P. EDWARDS, on July 23rd 1888. Both have enjoyed good health, but unfortunately, Mrs LAWTON had a bad fall a short time ago, which injured her leg, and has prevented her following her usual activities.
Mr. LAWTON was born at Roaches, Mossley, but came to live at Boarshurst, Greenfield, when he was two years of age, and attended old Boarshurst School and the Sunday school.
Commencing work in the warehouse at Wellington Mills, Greenfield, as a half-timer Mr LAWTON later became a spinner, and was employed there for 57 years - the whole of his working life.
He retired 12 months before the mills closed down following the death of Captain G. A. SCHOFIELD, J.P..
A staunch conservative, Mr LAWTON became a member of the new conservative club at Greenfield in 1895, and for 16 years served on the committee of management.
Mrs Ann LAWTON, who was the eldest daughter of the late Mr John BYROM, was born at Grosvenor Square, Uppermill, but later went to live with her parents at Mow Walls Farm, Dobcross, where she helped in the farmhouse until she was married.
During the war she enrolled in the V.A.D. and served as cook for three days a week from 1914 to 1915 at Oak Dene and Ashway Gap military hospitals. At the end of the war she was presented with the British Red Cross certificate by the order of St John of Jerusalem in England for her valuable services. She was also presented with medals.
"I liked the work and was always willing to help so long as I could" Mrs LAWTON told the "Reporter".
For many years she, too, was an active worker for Greenfield Conservative Club and served on the women's committee, and was a member of the Primrose League.
Mr and Mrs LAWTON have no family, but have been very closely associated with their nephews and nieces, most of whom were present at the happy celebrations on Sunday

On the opposite Register page to Esther Lawton's birth, there was a Mary Lawton born to Alfred Lawton and Hannah Lawton formerly Lawton on Demesne Street. Which is where Hannah Lawton (Eastwood) Widow of George Lawton was also living in the 1841 census? - Question is: Could the George (deceased) be a relative of Alfred or just a coincidence.Census - [date: 1841] [place: Back Stamford Street, Ashton-u-Lyne.]

St. Chad's Burial Register records this child Alice as being 'Overlain' as cause of Death, and the number '13' as her age. It would appear that whilst there is no actual period of Years, Months, or Weeks, given, It seems most likely that the Child Alice was about 13 weeks of age (3 Months) when she was 'Overlain' by either parent. This age would be supported by the date of her Baptism 25th December 1772 and the burial date of 24th March 1773, a period of 12 to 13 weeks.Burial - [date: 24 MAR 1773] [place: St. Chad's Saddleworth Churchyard.]

- - I am gathering evidence that convinces me that John Whittaker married the Alice Lawton, bap. 20 Sep1789 at Mossley , daughter of Gervas and Alice, and
not the Alice Lawton of Burnthill, bap on 25 Dec1787 as I have believed for the past twelve years, and you have recorded on your website. - Incidentally, John Whittaker was baptised at Mossley on 22 Jun 1783 and born at Grasscroft, but he could have been living inside the Cheshire boundary in 1808 as you suggest.

- Could this Alice be the Daughter of Gervas Lawton & Alice Shaw, who married at Rochdale St. Chad;s in 1804 - Alice Shaw may have been expecting by Gervas Lawton, and so married away from their locality of Mossley, Saddleworth. Alice Shaw (Lawton) died in 1806 after the birth of son Ishmael. - It appears Gervas Lawton may well have re-married to an Elizabeth (Betty) who bore him a second son named Ishmael Lawton in 1812, who also died as an infant in 1813Burial - [place: St. Chad's Churchyard, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.]

- Query about this Alice Lawton - In the 1871 Census she is aged 49 years - and the Burail Register records her as being aged 54 years when she died on 1st July 1876 - which equates and appears correct - However I have this Alice Lawron as being born in 1822, which would make her 59 years of age in 1876 and not 54 years. - Perhaps the Alice Lawton born in 1822 is not from thia Family - Check and Verify!

In the 1861 Census - Alice Lawton and her sisters Ann, Lucy & Sarah are all living at Bottoms with the head of household 'Hannah Lawton' (56) who is recorded as their 'Mother'. It would seem that widower Jonathon had re-married and it is likely that this 'Hannah Lawton' is Jonathons 2nd Wife

- The 1871 UK Census was conducted on the 2nd April 1871 - So this Alice Lawton should have been recorded at Slackcote Mill, along with the rest of the Lawton Family. - Alice Lawton died in September 1871 a full Five Months after the Census Date - So as she was not at Slackcote Mill, where was she?? - Perhaps she may have been in Hospital suffering from Tubercolsis, which is conjecture on my part - Further reseach would need to obtain a Death Certificate to ascertain the cause of Death.Burial - [date: 18 SEP 1871] [place: New Graveyard, St. Chad's Saddleworth Church, Uppermill.]

John Pendlebury and Alice Lawton were married on Christmas day 25 December 1879 in St Michael's Church, Ashton Under Lyne. Sharing their joint marriage was John's brother Richard Pendlebury and his new wife Elizabeth Jane Pyn. Alice's father George Lawton who was a farmer in Stayley was present with his wife Ann. John was 21 and Alice was 17 years old, their marriage certificate states that Alice was actually 21 which was incorrect. Witness at the marriage was Agnes Pyn, John Richard and Elizabeth acted as each other's witnesses.
The family lived in Stayley in Cheshire at 'Lane', Stayley, and Cheshire during the 1881 census but moved to 20 Long Row, Carrbrook, Stayley., before the 1891 census. During this period John served as a foreman cotton dyer at Carrbrook Print & Dye Works, whilst Alice was a housewife and the children attended the local schools.
By 1901 John Pendlebury had died due to alcoholism and Alice and the children had moved to 32 Slater Street, Salford. Alice worked as a Cotton Cop Reeler along with Margaret who was a Cotton Piece Cutter and Hannah who was a Cotton Cop Reeler.

- 1881 Census - Unmarried 18 year old living with her widower father Robert.spouse: Turner, Nathaniel Henry (1861 - )
I was searching for Alice Lawton, born 1863, daughter of Robert Lawton, pawnbroker, trying to find out what happened to her after 1881. I couldn't find a death and/or a marriage that seemed to fit so I checked just for "Alice". In 1891 I found an Alice Chadwick, married to George Chadwick, pawnbroker's assistant. They also had a Joseph Lawton as a lodger. It turns out that George married an Alice Birch. Just thought these were interesting. Probably not the Lawton's I'm looking for, but interesting.
I found Alice Lawton, born 1863, daughter of Robert Lawton. She married Nathaniel Henry Turner on Sept. 4, 1889 in St. Paul's Church, Mill Hill, Middlesex, UK. Nathaniel Henry Turner was a doctor. You can find them on the 1891 and 1901 census in Edgbaston. In 1911 Alice Lawton Turner is a visitor with Edith Strain, trained nurse, in Tunbridge Wells. Nathaniel is in London N. and has 2 visitors and 2 servants with him. They've been married 21 years and have no children.Occupation -
