First of all let me thank you for sending the 1841 list of Lawtons in Saddleworth, the list of Lawton burials at St. Thomas (Heights) Churchyard and the MIs from graves Nos. 1020 and 1051.
As you say, the mind "boggles" when trying to sort out the numerous Lawtons.
One major problem is to sort out the parentage of the Charles Lawton who married three times. Unfortunately two Charles Lawtons were born in 1798 and both were sons of a John and Sarah!!
1. Charles, son of John and Sarah Lawton of Dobcross was baptised on 5th August, 1798 at Holy Trinity, Dobcross.
2. Charles, son of John and Sarah Lawton, born 25th December, 1798, baptised 20th January, 1799 at Delph Wesleyan.
The only likely John Lawton marriage to a Sarah at Saddleworth in this period was the following: John Lawton, bachelor, and Sarah Littlewood, spinster, on 29th June, 1792.
It was possibly their daughter Betty who was baptised on 9th July 1792 at Delph Independent Chapel, shortly after their marriage. No other children of this couple at Delph Independent as far as I know. A Joseph born at Delph (bapt. 19th May, 1796 at Delph Wesleyan and Charles born 25th December, 1798 (bapt. 20th Jan. 1799) may also be their children.
** As for the second John and Sarah, they quite possibly married at Rochdale as so many other Saddleworth couples did. I have not had an opportunity to check this out.**
The Holy Trinity, Dobcross register contains the following baptisms:
1796, May 1. Wood, son of John and Sarah Lawton, Greaves.
1798, Aug. 5. Charles, son of John and Sarah Lawton, Dobcross. No other children of this couple at Holy Trinity, Dobcross.
Regarding your James Lawton, born 18th September, 1813. If this was indeed his correct year of birth there must have been two James Lawtons born the same day and month but two years apart. The Delph Independent register contains the following entry:
James, son of James and Esther Lawton, Hillend, born 18th September 1811, baptised 3rd November, 1811. It is of course possible that the wrong year has been recorded in the register although this is perhaps a little unlikely. It is all very puzzling.
In my previous e-mail I mentioned John Lawton (bapt. 28th Oct. 1792 at Holy Trinity, Dobcross) who married a Hannah. Their second son, bapt. at Delph Independent on 17th December, 1818 (died 5th April, 1822) was an Alfred. They had a second Alfred Hugo about 1824 (died 8th May, 1825, aged 2 years) and a third Alfred William, born 13th May, 1831 (bapt. 9th July, 1831 at Delph Independent). The latter died 19th January, 1914. Another son of John and Hannah was Joseph Shotwell who married a Margaret and had a son Charles (1861-1883). I note your James and Alice had a son William Alfred. Surely all this cannot be coincidence.
Sorry, I do not know if John Lawton of Woodbrook married twice but the 1841 Census entry which you sent me would suggest that he did marry again between September 1838, when Betty died, and the 1841 census when he was living with Dorothy.
If you send me the details from your file as suggested, I will browse through them and see if I have any additions and/or comments. It is just possible that I can add a few details concerning my wife Dorothy's Platt/Lawtons.
Kind regards,
Leonard.Baptism - [date: 05 AUG 1798] [place: Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.]
Son of James (Clothier) & Sarah Shaw Lawton of Delph - HOWEVER! - The actual written record in the original Baptism Register reads: CHARLES - The son of Jno Lawton, Clothier, and Sarah his wife, of Delph in the Parish of Saddleworth - Born Decm 25th_1798_ and Bapt_Jan 20th 1799_ By Jno Gardner - It would appear that the Minister used the abreviation 'Jno' to emphasis the name JOHN and not James. - So it would appear that the Father of CHARLES LAWTON could well be JOHN or JONATHAN LAWTON and not JAMES as transcribed into the Bishops Transcripts at Manchesterspouse: Murgitroyd, Mercy (~1782 - 1821)
1851 Census - Aged 52 (Wood Carver) at Moorgate, Uppermill.
1861 Census - Aged 62 (Wood Carver) at Moorgate, Uppermill.

Died aged 80 years at Uppermill.
It may be of interest to mention that Ann (Nanny) Metcalfe Lawton [wife of Bramley Broadbent] who died on 10 March 1876 in her 27th year, was baptised on 13 October 1849 at Ebenezer Chapel, Uppermill. Ann Metcalfe Lawton was the first wife of Bramley Broadbent (1846-1918). Bramley Broadbent married his second wife Mary Ann Kershaw on 10 August 1880 at Prestwich. She was the daughter of Job Kershaw, warehouseman, of 65 Dunkerley Street, Oldham. I am grateful to Prof. Leonard Broadbent for the latter information.Occupation -

- NOTE: - Many 'Delph' couples seem to have prefered being Married at St. Chad's Parish Church at Rochdale, rather than the local St. Chad's at Uppermill, Saddleworth. - It was quite a journey on foot 'Walking' to either of the Churches, as pedestrian transport was the main form of travel in those day's - Horse & Carriage for the Gentry only - The poor people walked everywhere. - Hence the extensive network of 'Footpaths' in and around Saddleworth.

Eminant Textile Merchant of J & C Lawton Co. of CharlestonResidence - [place: Charleston, South Carolina, U.S.A.]
- This Charles Lawton appears to have had more input into the southern business he lived in the 1830s in St Augustine. Florida -St Augustine until 1825 was Spanish . It was purchased by the USA .
The brothers Charles & Joseph, purchased about 6000 acres of land in Florida . Charles owned at his death a number of plots of land in St Augustine.
The brothers also purchased with an associate from Charleston one of the Florida Keys Islands (India Keys).
They also bought and sold a plantation behind Daytona beech it is called Dunlawton plenty of info on the internet on both India Keys and Dunlawton.
The stories of these two places involve Indian raids . Which was a problem right up to 1855 .
I have a Memorandum re a visit to Florida with his friend Mr G R Fairbanks a lawyer .
March 23 rd 1852. - Mr Fairbanks wrote the first history of Florida and was the founder of the Florida historical society. As well as a politician. - Hope this is interest to you .Probate - [date: 17 MAY 1839] [place: Charleston, South Carolina, U.S.A.]
From the probate enclosed Charles?s worth in the company. J & C Lawton of Charleston - 119,662 Dollars at $5 to the pound this relates to about ?23,932 in 1838 to get to today?s value ?1=?111.59 =?2,670,571 not bad .Death Note

Interesting article about William RADCLIFFE The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 26th January 1924. - SPINNERS PENSIONER.
A Mossley veteran's interesting career. - Saw Chicago fire.
Mr William RADCLIFFE, of Lorne Street, who has just been elected as a Mawdsley pensioner at the age of 80 years has had a most interesting career. He comes of an old Mossley family who over 100 years ago cultivated Bottoms Farm, which stretched from Carr Hill Mill site to Scout. Mr RADCLIFFE's grandparents were Jerry and Sally RADCLIFFE, who were born in 1757, and reared eleven children, John RADCLIFFE, the father of William, was born in 1806 and reared ten children, and William born in 1843 also had ten children. William was born in 1843 in cottages that stood just on the site of Mossley railway station and which were demolished when the railway was made in 1848.
In 1852 Mr. RADCLIFFE went to Nathaniel BUCKLEY's Old Mill, and later to Cheshire Side for a wage of 7s 6d, a week, and then to Britannia Mill for ten shillings a week. He was at Britannia when the mill was burned down in 1860. After about three months in Hurst he came back to Mossley, and was at George MAYALL's during the cotton panic. Then to John MAYALL's Old Flat Mill, where he worked for ten years.
In 1871 he decided to try America, and stayed out there four years. He arrived in Chicago to see the great fire of October 1871, when the city was reduced to ruins. He was back in Mossley in 1876, and started spinning again at Spring Mill, Roaches, then owned by Messrs BUCKLEY and LEES. He outstayed all employers and employees at that mill, as the owners were afterwards BUCKLEY and NOEL, and then Una Mill Co.. In 1910 he decided to leave the mill and has since been a contented man with family and friends. He is still very sound physically and can reel off stories and dates of far-off days in a most interesting fashion. May he live long to enjoy his Mawdsley Pension is the wish of local spinners' officials and members who know him so well.

The bridegroom is the youngest son of Mr J. T. SYKES, provision dealer of Uppermill, and the bride is the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Whitehead LAWTON of Uppermill.
The bride, given away by her father, was charmingly attired in a dress of caramel crepe-de-chine and angel lace with hat and coat to match. Her bridesmaid was Miss Alice LAWTON (sister), prettily dressed in blue crinkle crepe with hat and coat to tone. The best man was Mr Frank SYKES (brother of the bridegroom).
Mrs LAWTON (the bride's mother) wore a dress of dark brown with hat to match and the bridegroom's stepmother, wore fawn and a hat to tone.
After the ceremony Mr and Mrs SYKES left by car for North Wales for a motoring honeymoon.
The bride is an enthusiastic worker for Ebenezer Church and School. - Mr and Mrs SYKES are to reside at "Dalmuir", Carr Lane, Uppermill.Don't remember if I have sent you this information before, but I find that there is a 2nd connection to the Lawton line, although not in my direct line. It begins with John Holden and Ann Shaw married 1761 St. Chads and follows through their son Martin, 1796 (youngest brother to my Buckley Holden) and his wife Sarah Heigh. Next in the line is their daughter Mary Ann (b. abt. 1841) who married a John Holden from Primrose(haven't figured out if he is related or not yet) Their daughter Harriet Ann married John Thomas Sykes (18 Oct. 1899 St. Chads) and it was their son Jack who married Doris Lawton 6 May 1933 Ebenezer Church Uppermill.
