The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 22nd September 1928 - Mossley wedding - Miss Dorothy PLATT and Mr F. LAWTON.

Solemnised by the pastor, the Rev. H. W. CALLOW, M.A., B.D., the wedding took place at the Abney Congregational Chapel, on Saturday afternoon, of Miss Dorothy PLATT, only daughter of Mr and Mrs R. E. PLATT, of 7 Livingstone Avenue, and Mr Fred LAWTON, youngest son of Mr and Mrs LAWTON, of Heyheads. The bride, a member of a highly esteemed Mossley family, is closely associated with the Abney Chapel, and a large congregation witnessed the ceremony, Mr Harry WHITE, the Abney organist, playing suitable music.
Given away by her father, the bride looked charming in a dress of ivory silk trimmed with pearls, and a wreath and veil. She carried a bouquet of lilies. Her bridesmaids were Miss Janie HILL, her close personal friend, and Miss Alice LAWTON, the bridegroom's sister. Miss HILL wore a pink dress trimmed with diamante, and Miss LAWTON was attired in blue crepe de chine, trimmed with lace. Both bridesmaids carried exquisite bouquets.
The best man was Mr Clifford PLATT, the bride's brother, and the groomsman, Mr Frank LAWTON, brother of the bridegroom. The reception was held at the Abney School, and afterwards at the bride's home. The bride and bridegroom, who are both associated with the Woodend Mill, received many handsome presents, the bride, a member of the Woodend office staff, received a beautiful timepiece from her colleagues.
Mr and Mrs LAWTON left for a honeymoon at Blackpool and they will reside on the Fox Platt estate.

He didn?t really know where Hey farm was but thought it might be in Micklehurst. There was a Heystead farm close by the old town centre of Micklehurst, down by the river, now converted to two modern houses.

- NOTES: - I have discoverd that the were several locations that were named or known as just "LANE" throughout Saddleworth & Mossley. Which can cause much confusion in authenticating early records:

- "LANE" at Stayley Wood, would appear to refer to 'Besom Lane' at Millbrook which lead up to and beyond Hyde Green and eventually leads into Moor Edge Road under the Harridge Moor and onto Shireclough, Carrbrook.
- "LANE" at Stayley, seems certain to refer to Earnshaw Lane, which lead up from Stayley Bottoms to Heyheads.
- "LANE" at Mossley, refers to 'Under Lane' which eventually became 'Lees Road' - Leading from Brookbottom onto Thornley, and to Grotton, Lydgate.
- "LANE" at Hartshead, refers to the road leading from "Milking Green" at Lees,up to Knowls, and then up to Higher Knowls and Lane Head at Hartshead and on to Broadcarr Lane at Mossley.
- " LANE" at Friezland, refers to the raod leading up from 'Bockin' and up 'Warlow Clough" to White Lea, Mount Pleasant, Greenmans, and Lane Head and Windwistle, below 'Noon Sun' Moor

Lawton, George (~1760 - ) - male
b. Abt 1760 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Although this marriage is recorded in Radcliffes Marriages Register at St. Chad's on 8th April 1784, there are no details attached, and I cannot locate any children attributed to this couple, either in the IGI Records or in Radcliffe's St. Chad's Baptism's Register. Martha Lawton wife of George died in April 1790 at Stonewood, Delph, and was buired 10th January 1790 at St. Chad's Graveyard. This George Lawton could well be the one to have re-married in 1797 to Sarah Wrigley on 27th November 1797 at St. Chad's. If so, I cannot locate any children attributed to the marriage of George & Sarah Wrigley, either in Radcliffes or St. Chad's Baptism Register, nor any records in the IGI Lists. Could it be this George Lawton was unable to produce any children. (Conjecture on my part at this stage)

b. JUL_SEP 1799 in Earnshaw Lane, Stayley, Cheshire.
d. 07 MAY 1856 in Micklehurst, Tintwistle, Mottram Parish, Cheshire.

father: Lawton, Joseph (1774 - 1803)
mother: Shaw, Mary (1778 - )
NOTES: Son of Joseph & Mary Lawton of Mossley - George Lawton (Woollen Manufacturer) of Micklehurst died 7th May 1856 aged 57

Joseph Fearns Lawton made reference to his father George Lawton living at "Rushes" Carrbrook at one stage, which must have been before 1841- "Rushes" consisted of a group of 3 or 4 cottages located at the bottom of Moor Edge Lane just below 'Shireclough' and directly behind Carrbrook Printworks. - Joseph Fearns Lawton also bequeathed the plot of land at Miller Hey, Micklehurst for the site of Mossley Municipal Cemetery from the estate of his Grandfather Joseph Lawton of Earnshaw Farm. So it follows that George Lawton must have been the son of Joseph Lawton of Earnshaw Farm, on Staley Road.

MOSSLEY TEXTILE MILLS - VALE MILL @ MICKLEHURST - The first Mill on this site was erected 1793 by Benjamin Mellor.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By 1847, when this Mill, which became known as Vale Mill, was rebuilt and ownership had passed to James Buckley of Saddleworth. Probably George Lawton took up occupation of Vale Mill at, or soon after that date and in 1858 George Lawton's Executors purchased the freehold from the Buckley family of Greenfield, Saddleworth. A new mill was added on the site in 1860 and there were further significant extensions in 1871 and 1886. About 1910 Vale Mills among other machinery, contained 3,600 spindles and 58 looms. The firm George Lawton & Sons, Flannel and Woollen Manufacturers, which became a Limited Company by 1924, remained in occupation of Vale Mills until they ceased to be used in the Woollen Industry in the 1930's. The premises were sold by Auction in 1938

Where Handloom Weavers Made Cloth for Royalty

Typical of many of the three-storied stone houses in Mossley, is Back Chapel Street, wherein the attic workshops the former Hand-Loom Weaver plied his trade.

Visitors to Mossley will probably have noticed that many of the stone houses - amongst the oldest in the town - are three storeys high, particularly in the neighbourhood of the Market Place, in Wyre Street, at Brookbottom and at Baguley. The attic, or top-storey was the workshop where the handloom weavers had their looms. In the case of the one in Back Chapel Street, the workshop ran over the whole length of the four stone houses which front the Market Ground.

LOOMS ARE NOW DISMANTLED

The old handloom weavers have long since disappeared, and their looms have been dismantled, so at present these top garrets are no longer used as workshops. The houses depicted in the photograph were purchased by the trustees of the Market Place, Methodist Church, over thirty years ago, and the garret (attic) is now used as a storeroom. They were then 'back-to-back' houses, but the trustees converted them into through houses. To reach the workshop the weaver had to walk along a landing protected by railings, and mount a flight of stone steps.

Half a century and more ago, Messrs. George Lawton and Sons, fancy flannel manufacturers, of Vale Mills, Micklehurst, and also of Diggle, rented several attics in the neighbourhood of the Market Ground, including the one in Back Chapel Street, and another in Wyre Street, next to the old Albion Inn, and yet another in Trafalgar Square, off Wyre Street.

WON THREE EXHIBITIONS

Between twenty and thirty handloom weavers were employed in these attics, weaving the best of flannel shirtings from silk warp and very fine woollen weft. Messrs. Lawton had the reputation at that time of being the finest flannel manufacturers in the World, and they had won the Paris Exhibition, the Sydney Exhibition and the Melbourne Exhibition.

Over fifty years ago Mr. Joseph Fearns Lawton (who was Mayor of Mossley from 1890 to 1892) sent his eldest son, Mr. Albert Lawton, to Australia with cases containing goods from the raw material to the finest finished article. After the exhibition the cases were sold for 1,500, Mr. Lawton made his son a present of the money, and he had a world tour. Returning, he entertained the workpeople of Messrs. George Lawton & Sons and gave each one a present.

WORN BY ROYALTY

Practically all the material sent to the exhibition was woven by hand at the mill in Back Chapel Street, in Trafalgar Square, and in Wyre Street. At this time Messrs. Lawton's used to sell their best white flannel to a merchant in London, who supplied it to Royalty, so that flannel woven in the attic workshops of Mossley was worn by Royalty in the Victorian era.

It was the custom of the handloom weavers to deliver their work at Messrs Lawton's Mill each Saturday morning, and take back warp and weft to weave during the following week. Some brought their goods on Donkeys. The material, after leaving the handloom weavers, was finished at Messrs. Lawton's Diggle Mill in Saddleworth. Some of the handloom weavers, it is related, could not be induced to start work before about Tuesday or Wednesday in the week, and then they would put in many hours of labour in order to complete their task for Saturday morning's "reckoning". If there was a 'Hunt' in the neighbourhood, some of the weavers could not be induces to make a start at all until the hunt was finished.

WEAVERS IN TOP HATS AND CLOGS

It is recalled that some of the handloom weavers went to work wearing tall hats, clogs, and short brown aprons. Back Chapel; Street was known locally as "Cuckoo Square". An explanation offered is that an old handloom weaver who lived in the square possessed a Cuckoo Clock. Something went wrong with the mechanism and the clock hung silent on the wall.

The old weaver had a son who was mechanically minded. He set about to repair the clock, and there was no prouder man in Cuckoo Square than the old handloom weaver when, returning home from work one night, he heard the time-piece ticking merrily away. Striking time came and the cuckoo came out, but instead of chiming "Cuc-koo" the clock chimed "oo-kuc", the boy having apparently fixed this part of the mechanism the wrong way about.

Lawton, George (~1805 - 1839) - male
b. Abt 1805 in Stayley, Cheshire, England.
d. JAN_MAR 1839 in Stayley, Cheshire.
- On the Marriage Register at Manchester Cathedral the register is signed by witnesses: Joseph Lawton who made his mark X and by Charles Andrew who signed his name. - So it could be George's father was Joseph Lawton.

This GEORGE LAWTON Lawton was Born: Abt 1805 at Stayley - Married Hannah Eastwood, Daughter of William & Hannah Eastwood, about 1836 at Manchester Cathedral. The couple had two son's JOHN EDWARD & WILLIAM HENRY - and at the 1841 Census we find his Widow HANNAH (EASTWOOD) LAWTON back living with her parents William & Hannah & Family at Demense Street, Copley, Stayley. with her son JOHN EDWARD LAWTON aged 4 years - Query! - her son WILLIAM HENRY was born in 1842 - a year after the death of husband George Lawton.

- From: Tameside Registrar - 7/6/08 - Hi, Trevor

Very complicated!! - The William Henry Lawton born in Stockport is your William Henry!! - He was born in Hyde at Newton Street in 1842, son of George Lawton and Hannah Eastwood, ref Hyde7/27 on cheshire bmd. Hannah registered the birth, and it doesn't say that George is deceased, George Died aged 34 in 1839

Death Note

- This GEORGE LAWTON is a bit of a mystery!. as his wife Hannah (Eastwood) Lawton is tp be found living with her parents and siblings at Demense Street, Stayley in the 1841 Census with one child John Edward Lawton, but she must have been pregnant with her second child William Henry Lawton who's Birth was registered Jan_Mar 1842 at Stockport. Apparently she was living at Newton Street, Hyde, when she gave birth to William Henry.
