1851 - I found a James Schofield aged 53 cotton waste dealer, his wife Betty - 51 - Reeler, his father Jonathon Schofield Widower - 77- Schoolmaster
and James' sister Mary Ann Schofield living in the Lydgate Parish at Waterhead Mill.

In 1861 just James and Betty were still in Saddleworth at Mill Bottom and in 1871.

So no luck with the Ann there. One mystery about this Betty in1851/ 61/71 is that she claimed to have been born in Lancs.Oldham.However,this could tie in with the statement on the James/Betty Schofields children's baptisms at the Mossley New Connexion where it said her "father Joseph Lawton was late of " Hazlehurst". - The other issue,too, is that like us theydid not always fill in forms correctly. Ann Lawton was perhaps married by1841 and so this may be another avenue to follow. I feel that together we are starting to sort them out. I am sending some other attachments. I hopethat they are of interest and that I am not pestering you.These documents are from film at the library.

In case it may be of interest to members of the group who are researching the name Schofield/Scholefield I give below a few details on Miles Schofield who was born at Bleak Hey Nook, Saddleworth and died at Nantwich, Cheshire. Since my original article on Miles Schofield (Saddleworth Hist. Soc. Bull. Vol. 10, pp. 66-67. 1980) additional information has come to hand. The following is a brief summary of my findings.

Miles was born at Blakehaynook [Bleak Hey Nook] and baptised on 4th January, 1801 at St. Chad., Saddleworth., the son of James Scholefield and his wife Martha. His parents may have been the James Scholefield of Castleshaw who married Martha Scholefield of Delph, on 19th November, 1787 at St. Chad.

Miles married his first wife Ruth Allcord (sic) on 15th May, 1825 at St. Mary's, Oldham and by the year 1838 had moved from Saddleworth and was trading as a boot and shoe maker and leather cutter, in High Street, Oldham.

Between 1841 and 1851 his wife Ruth died and he had married his second wife Frances Euphemia Todd who was some 18 years his junior. She was born at Grassington, Yorkshire and baptised on 24th April, 1819 at Skipton in Craven Wesleyan Chapel. By his first wife Miles had a daughter Ann, and by his second wife a daughter Maria Todd Schofield. His second marriage has not been located.

The 1851 census gives Miles' trade as shoe dealer, and we know from an "unofficial farthing" which he issued, that he was also trading at ano. 8 High Street, Oldham, as a tea dealer. This "farthing" is one of several similar pieces issued by various traders in Oldham and other parts of the country, probably during shortages of regal farthings.

From Oldham, Miles Schofield moved to Nantwich, Cheshire, probably between 1857 and 1864, in which year he first appears in a Cheshire directory. He is listed as a leather cutter, trading in High Street, Nantwich, and he apparently continued in business there until his death on 19th January, 1873.

DWELLINGS ON LADCASTLE LANE TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO

Ladcastle Lane joins the Oldham/Uppermill road at today?s Greenfield station. The same two roads existed in the eighteenth century, when they were both rough tracks. Ladcastle Lane runs almost due north for about a mile before it swings sharply left towards Ladcastle. Along the mile stretch, the ground slopes steeply downwards on the right hand side of the lane (the east) and steeply upward on the left hand side (the west).

In the eighteenth century a traveller from the southernmost end would have passed five almost equally spaced groups of buildings on the mile long northern stretch, all on the right hand side of the lane.

Tenancies and their buildings

These tenancies are to be found on the three large scale Saddleworth maps in ?Saddleworth Surveyed?, published in 1983. The earliest, 1770 map, was commissioned by James Farrer, who was the Lord of the Manor of Saddleworth at that time. The 1822 map was drawn up for the Saddleworth Vestry Committee for rateable purposes, while the 1849 map was one of England?s earliest Ordnance Survey maps.

The house on the southernmost of the tenancies was called Warmton Bank in the 1849 map. It is marked, but unnamed, in the two earlier maps.

Moving north, the next group of buildings (enough to house six families) is called Wharmton Brow in the 1770 map but Tinkers in the 1822 map. It is not to be found in the 1849 map because its buildings would have been demolished when the railway was built.

The next tenancy was called Lees?s in the 1770 and 1822 maps but has changed its name to Wickens in the O.S. map. It contained three bays of housing in 1770

Next comes a tenancy called Philips in the Farrer map but Moorgate in the later maps. It also contained three bays of housing in 1770.

The northernmost of the five tenancies was called Wharmtonside in the Farrer map but Bedlam in the two later maps. It contained two houses with outhousing in 1770.

In the key to the Farrer map there was a further tenancy called ?Cottages? adjacent to Wharmtonside, in which there was a new building housing several families.

Eddie Felton - A few weeks ago you made an enquiry to the shsfhg about Alice Lawton, who married William Schofield in 1806. There were three Alice Lawtons baptised between 1786 and 1789, two at Mossley and one at St. Chad's. I can definitely account for the marriages of the two from Mossley (one of them was my g-g-grandmother). So there is no doubt in my mind that the one who married William Schofield was the daughter of George and Betty Lawton of Moorgate.
