The "LAWTON" , "SCHOLEFIELD" and "WINTERBOTHAM" - Surnames were prevelant in the immediate area of Holehouse, Lane Head, White Lee, and Fern Lea. all situated on the Alphin Hillside of Saddleworth during the 17th & 18th Century. - This GEORGE LAWTON is probably the father of the George Lawton Baptised 22 MAR 1723 at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church.

- HOLEHOUSE - Comprised of a "Fold" (Settlement) of three story Weavers Cottages, Situated on either side of Shadworth Lane (Shadows Lane), A wide passage of vacant land which clearly defines the County Boundary demarkation between the Counties of Cheshire & Yorkshire. And whilst the small community was officially classified as situate in Micklehurst, Tintwistle, Mottram Parish, Cheshire, the buildings could be construed as being in 'No-Man's-Land' as half the fold lay on the Yorkshire sdie of the Lane, whilst the other half was on the Cheshire side. - In the early 20th Century these buidling were in a very poor state of repair and becoming dilapidated, and the enite group of cottages were declared 'un-inhabitable' and subsequently demolished and removed from the landscape, - No trace of the Holehouse Fold remains.

A few months ago I helped Trevor Butterworth with his family history and was pleased to find that he and I have common ancestors in the Gervas Lawton and Alice Wood who married in 1762. During our collaboration I sent Trevor a biography of the family of Gervas and Alice and told him about your comprehensive website, in which he could investigate further Lawton relationships. - He emailed me some time later to say that your account of the children of Gervas and Alice differed from mine. So I visited your website for the first time this year and found that there were indeed several discrepancies between your record and mine. I would like to take these up with you in an effort to get the record straight.

The eldest child of Gervas and Alice, baptised in 1761 before they married, was Mally. My son discovered recently that Mally maintained the surname of Wood, and married Joseph Whitaker in 1781. Their son, John (1783), was my ancestor, who married his cousin, Alice (1787), the daughter of George Lawton, himself the eldest son of Gervas and Alice. So I am descended twice over, as it were, from Gervas and Alice. But I digress and will return to my main theme.

On your website you have George baptised 28 December 1764, with which I agree. But you have him born ~ 1761. If he had been born in 1761, he would have been the twin of Mally. I cannot believe that one twin would have been baptised in 1761 and not the other. So I am confident that George was born in 1764, the year in which he was baptised.

You have a child Alice, born in 1763 and died in 1772. You probably took this entry from a private submission which can be found on the IGI. However, there is no record in the parish registers of either the baptism or burial of such an Alice Lawton and I recommend that you delete this entry from your website. - You have a child, Alice, baptised 25 December 1772, which is correct, but you have her buried on 22 May 1777, which is incorrect. Radcliffe has a St. Chad?s burial entry for 24 March 1773, which states Alice, d. of Jervas Lawton, clothier, and Alice his w., Uppermill, 13, overlain?. In my opinion the child baptised on Christmas day 1772 lived for just 13 weeks and was tragically smothered in its parent?s bed while they were asleep.

There is indeed a burial entry for a second Alice on 22 May 1777 in Radcliffe, but there is no baptism of this child to be found in the parish records. I think this child may have died within 24 hours of its birth and there was insufficient time to have it baptised, but this is only my gut feeling. The child could have been born in 1776 or early 1777 and simply not have been baptised. Nevertheless the records show that Gervas and Alice had two children named Alice, both of whom died in infancy.

I agree with your entries concerning the remaining children of Gervas and Alice. However, you will be interested that Martha (~1769) married William Greenoff (alternatively spelt Greenough or Greenhough) at St. Chad?s on 16 December 1788. They were ancestors of Trevor Butterworth. Trevor could give you baptism dates and addresses of their nine children if you wish to expand Martha?s entry on your website.

- GERVAS & ALICE (WOOD) LAWTON of HOLEHOUSE

The Christian name Gervas seems to be a corruption of GERVAISE. - When the Family Search Service of the Mormons is consulted for records of the name Gervas LAWTON, it produces 163 entries with several variants (Gervase, Gervis, Garvis, Jarvis, Jervis, Jervise, etc.). In only one entry does the name appear as Gervaise. For simplicity's sake the name will appear as GERVAS throughout this biography.

Another suprising feature of this name entry is that only one of the Grevas LAWTON's was Baptised outside the Fout Counties of Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire & Derbyshire. Even more suprisingly, despite the vast area encompassed by these four counties, the majority of Gervas LAWTON's were born within a ten-mile radius of MOSSLEY. For some reason it was a most popular among the LAWTON's in that particular area.

The Gervas Lawton who I beleive to have been my ancestor was born at HOLEHOUSE, a tiny hamlet about a mile to the North East of St. Georges Parish Church at Mossley. The hamley straddled the ancient Yorkshire / Cheshire border so that some of it's habitations were on one side of the boundary and some on the other side. Gervas's parents George and Martha Lawton, lived on the Cheshire side, so that when Gervas was Baptised at St. Chad's Church in Saddleworth Yorkshire, on the 11th March 1732/3, it was recorded in the register that he was of "Holehouse in Mottrom (sic) Parish".

Alice WOOD, whom Gervas LAWTON married at St. Chad's Church, Saddleworth, on the 1st October 1762, was the eldest child of JOHN & SARAH WOOD. She was born at Wharnton (sic), in Saddleworth, and Baptised at St. Chad's Church on the 25th January 1740/1. The register, unusually does not record from where each was Married.

All their childre were Baptised at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church. Thier eldest, Mally, was Baptised on the 7th December 1761, a year before her parents were married. The Baptism Register records "MALLY" daughter of ALICE WOOD, Spinster, of Wharmton-brough (Brow), by Jarvis Lawton, Clothier, of Phillips. - George, their eldest son, was born at Wharmton Bank, and Baptised on the 28th December 1764. Most of their children were born in Uppermill, - These were: JOHN (November 1766) - MARTHA (2nd April 1769) - ALICE (25th December 1772) - JOHN (17th April 1774) - and JERVIS (sic), (25th October 1778) - The family clearly moved to 'Furlane' in Greenfield, from where NANNY, the youngest child, was Baptised on the 4th November 1781. In all the Baptism Records, Gervas was described as a 'Clothier'

The St. Chad's Burial Register, showed that Four of their children did not survive to become adults. JOHN was buried 11th April 1769 ages 2 years: ALICE was buried on the 24th March 1773, ages 13 Months. (For a short period around this time the Parish Burial Register noted the cause of Death. ALICE was "Overlain", suggesting that she was tragcally suffocated in the night by one of her parents or siblings). - There must have been another child named AILCE, perhaps born in 1776, whose Baptism has not been found, but was Buried on 22nd May 1777. - The burial of their son JOHN, at the age of 15 years, was recorded on 8th September 1789. At that time they were living at 'Burntwood' in Quickmere (Now Roughtown, Mossley) to where they must have moved in 1786 or earlier.

In the Name of God Amen, this Eleventh Day of September in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Five. I John Loton of Micklehurst in the Parish of Mottram in Longdendale and County of Chester, Clothier, being under affliction, but of sound and perfect memory, blessed be God for the same. I do make and ordain this my Last Will & Testament (that is to say) I reccomend my Soul into the hands of the Almighty God that gave it me and my body to the Earth to be buried in Christian decent manner at the discretion of my executors.as it has pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give and dispose of follows. First I will that all my Debts and Funeral expenses be all paid out of my personal estate.

And it is my will and mind ? I give to my Loving Son JOHN LAWTON the Clock with one half of the personallity as is therein being when he attains the age of Twenty One Years of Age,

And it is my Will and Mind and I do give to my Loving Son GERVAS LAWTON and my Loving Daughter MARTHA LAWTON the other half of my personalty to be equally divided between them and it is my Will and Mind that the said Child or Children shall have their part or parts as they severally attain the Age of Twenty One Years of Age and in the meantime have such a bringing up and maintenance as their age and station will allow and require and have some trade or Lawfull Calling provided them. - NOTES: - In trying to determine the age of this JOHN LAWTON we must look at the facts: - In his Will of 1765 he does not mention his Wife as a beneficiary, only his three children JOHN, GERVAS and MARTHA, all of who are under the age of Twenty One Years. - If we apply some suppositions we may be able to identify the Year of his Birth and perhaps Marriage thereabouts.

If his three children were all between the ages of 15 years and 21 years then they would have been born twix the years: 1750-1755 -

If these children were all between the ages of 10 years to 15 years, then they would have been born between the years 1755-1760 - (1753 - 1760)

If these children were all between the ages of 1 year to 5 years, then they would have been born between the years 1760-1765

I have a cousin who has Alice's family bible and I asked him to scan any and all info for me and to mail it to me and as soon as I get it I will let you know what more there is. In 1860 George's wife was named Harriett, age 28, and they had only Oliver who was 4. In 1870 George's wife was Alice, age 41, and they had three children, Oliver 14, Sarah 9, and Harry 6. Harriett and Alice may have been the same person, but probably not as there was a three year age difference as well as a different name. The 1860 census may well be the wrong George even though he has the son Oliver who is the right age.
