Death of Mossley lady in America.

We have this week received a copy of the "Clinton Courier", which is published in Michigan, and which contains an obituary notice of the late Emma Louise LAWTON, who was born in Mossley in 1828. She was the oldest of a family of five children, the youngest of whom, with the father and mother died within a year, so that at the age of nine years she was left an orphan and the oldest of four children. In course of time she became a nurse in the family of the late Mr John BUCKLEY, J.P., of Carr Hill, Mossley. She was married to Frederick BROADBENT in 1850. It was their purpose to leave almost immediately for America, but they were detained on account of the cotton famine, but went to America as soon as the trouble subsided, settling for a time in Walden, New York. A year later they went to Clinton, where they settled. Mr BROADBENT met with an accident which caused his death in 1884, and five years later, Mrs BROADBENT again married a Mr Edward BROADBENT, who died in 1899. Two nieces, Mrs KATNER and Mrs BREESE lived with her, being her only relatives. A brother and several nieces and nephews survive her in England. Previous to going to America Mrs BROADBENT and her husband were devoted members of the Methodist New Connexion Church, and of the Wyre Street Sunday School. After going to America she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and took an active part in the various church meetings. Her death took place on the 21st June, after a few days illness, at the age of 83 years.

Hello Trevor,

I found another LAWTON article in The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter recently which I think you will find interesting.

**********************

I noted a few things about her ....
Frederick and Emma travelled to New York on the 17th February 1865
In 1900 she was living on her own as a widow at Clinton, Michigan and her dob was September 1827.
In 1910 she was still living on her own at Clinton, Michigan.

I hope this is useful,

Kind regards,
Alison
