- St. Chad's Parish Church - Marriage Register - Page: 23 - Record: 859 - 25th November 1779 - JOSEPH LAWTON, of this Parish, Clothier, and ANN WOLFENDEN within Oldham in the Parish of Saddleworth, were married withing this Chapel by Licence, this Twenty Fifth Day of November in the Year One Thousand, Seven Hundred and Seventy Nine, By Me: Lance Bellas (Minister) - The Marriage was solemnised by Joseph Lawton who signed his name and Ann Wolfenden who made her Mark (X) - In the presence of Witnesses: Josiah Lawton and James Buckley.
It appears by process of elimination that this was NOT the 'Sarah Milnes' that married Josiah of Gatehead, Delph - Perhaps the Sarah Milnes married Josiah of Thurstones in Diggle.spouse: Thornes, Sarah (Milnes) Mills of (~1700 - 1792)
NOTES: In Radcliffe Register of Marriages a Josiah Lawton married Sarah ??? in 1724 at St. Chad's
- St. Chad's Marriage Register - Wedding - 2nd June 1735 - JOSIAH LAWTON of Thurstons, Clothier - and SARAH MILNES of Thornes, Spinster
NOTES: on JOSIAH LAWTON and SARAH
Josiah was probably baptised 27th October 1695 at St. Chad's. Your notes state that Josiah married Sarah Milnes about 1717 in Delph Independent Chapel. Delph Independent Chapel was not in existence at that time and there would be no marriages here until after 1837 I believe.
Did this record come from family papers? I wonder if there is confusion with Josiah Lawton of Thurstones who married Sarah Milnes of Thornes on 2nd June 1735 at St. Chad.
Incidentally I note that a second Josiah Lawton and Sarah of Intack, bapt. a son John on 28th March 1736 at the same time that the other Josiah and Sarah were at Gatehead.Occupation -

- Radcliife Burial Registers of St. Chad's Parish Church - 1779 - Book 2 - Page: 426 - 8th May 1779 - JOSIAH LAWTON, Clothier, of Stones, Aged 88 years. -
- NOTE: I think a transcription error has occured in recording the Age: of 88 Years, which is the age that is written for the previous record for 'Gervase Lawton' of Claytons, Whereas the age of Josiah Lawton is difficult to read and looks to be more like 49 or 47 years or even 4 years.
Radcliffe Burials Register Book: 2 Page: 426 - States clearly that this Josiah was aged 88 Years when he died - However!, When examining the actual hand-written details in the register, the age is almost illegible and looks more like '49 Years' than 88. - I would draw readers attention to the actual details on Page; 426 of the Register in the Manchester Archives to verify for themselves.Baptism - [date: 14 JAN 1693] [place: St. Chad's Parish Church, Uppermill, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.]
