- St. Mary's Church, Prestwich - Marriage Register - Page: 107 - 11th June 1835 - JOHN LAWON & JANET WEIR of Oldham, were married in this Church by Banns published - on the 11th June 1835 - By me: N.H.Molinson ???? - Both John Lawton & Janet Weir signed the register - Witnesses: Robert Dyson & James Sheldrick (Church Wardens)
- Radcliffe Registers record Gervas son of Gervas & Mary of Holehouse being buried on March 22nd 1733, but it seems more likely that it was George who died in 1733 as a second child George was born to Gervas & Mary in 1734. Gervas born 1728 went on to marry Joanna Mayall at Shelderslow in 1754
- WRONG - It was GERVAS LAWTON - Son of George & Martha of Holehouse who was buried on 11th March 1733 - NOT GEORGE son of Gervas & Mary. - AmendBurial - [place: St. Chad's Saddleworth Churchyard.]
NOTE: - There is some question as too the validity of this record. As it may well have been son GEORGE and not GERVAS who died in 1733 - But the original entry in the St. Chad's Burial Register definately states GERVAS.

Radcliffe Registers record the death of Gervas Lawton - Son of Gervas Lawton (Clothier) and Mary his wife of Wellihole on 22nd March 1732spouse: Mayall, Joanna (1734 - 1807)
IGI Records mention Well-i-hole. - Radcliffe records an MI on a gravestone in St. John's Churchyard, Hey, Lees. of Joanna (Mayall) Lawton died May 9th 1807 in her 74th year. Husband Gervas Lawton of Well-i-hole, Lees Brook, died July 8th 1813 in his 85th year. (B: 1728) - Supra: Gervas Lawton of Lees - Yeoman - Admon. 4th September 1813
Radcliffe Marriage Registers: Weddings A.D. 1754 - 1st May 1754 - Gervas Lawton, married Joanna Mayall. Paid Licence. - Sub-note: Gervas Lawton of Wellihole, Died: 24th July 1813 in his 85th Year, and Joanna, his wife Died: 9th May 1807, in her 74th Year, Buried at St. John the Baptist Church, Hey, Lees.
I have transcribed the MI of this Gravestone in St. John's Churchyard and also photgraphed the headstone.
Radcliffe Baptism Register of St. Chad's Church records a GEORGE, son of George and Mary Lawton of Wellihole, being Baptised on 22nd October 1730 - Then also another son GEORGE, being Baptised on the 12th September 1734, therefore it is considered that it was GEORGE [1730] that may have died in 1733 and not GERVAS as recorded, hense the Birth and Baptism of a second son GEORGE in 1734. - GERVAS went on to marry Joanna Mayall in 1754. which refutes the fact that he was the one who died in 1733

I have attached a page from the 1850 US Census for Union Township (Rockton), Clearfield Co., Pennsylvania.** My ancestral Schofields are actually on the preceding page.
Side Note: and I'm pretty sure I'm also descended from the John & Catherine Long listed here. But most importantly, this page shows Eliza Lawton there, in Rockton, with her brother, Henry Whitehead in 1850. There is also an Alexander Schofield (born abt 1822) living with this Whitehead-Lawton family in remote central PA at the time. Perhaps he was a cousin or nephew. Where is Eliza's husband John Lawton? If you accept the 1847 immigration record I directed you too as likely correct, he could/should well be in the US....back in Philadelphia or NYC, perhaps? Why the separation of the family at this time? Some interesting questions...
Text from an article in USA : - John Lawton who came to the US but died in England: and Mrs Eliza Lawton who died in Philadelphia: The maternal Grandfather of the family 'James Schofield' was a native of England, whence he came to Philadelphia at an early date, spending the remainer of his life in ........? - Checked the Saddleworth Deaths Register from 1847 through to 1850 and this John Lawton is not found in Saddleworth, so maybe he died elsewhere in England.Occupation -

Noted on one page an entry Emily Whitehead married but it gave no year or other information regarding Emily. From my own records it appeared that Emily was born c. 1855, the daughter of Joel Whitehead (who is mentioned elsewhere in the book) and his wife Alice Radcliffe who married at Rochdale in 1848. Joel Whitehead (1819 - 1897) was the son of Ralph Whitehead (1779 - 1852) and his wife Hannah Lawton (d. 1819). Ralph was the son of James Whitehead (1753 - 1828) and his wife Joanna Wrigley (1752 - 1819), and James was the son of Thomas Whitehead and Mary Harling who married at St. Chad, Saddleworth on 3rd January 1744/5.spouse: Whitehead, John W (1850 - )Census - [date: 1881] [place: Saddleworth Fold, Uppermill, Saddleworth.]

NOTES: On SARAH MARGARET CARNEY WHITEHEAD
I was going through some photos I took of plaques inside Christ Church, Friezland and found the following:
"In remembrance of Joseph Lawton, Esq. of Delph in this parish and of Charlston, South Carolina who died at the latter place April 12th 1855 aged 60.? The memory of the just is blessed.?
Also of three infant children of Joseph Lawton and of S. M. C. Whitehead his wife, the eldest of whom, a daughter died in Charlston, Charles in New York and Heywood in Essex, their angels do always behold the face of my father which is in heaven.?
This tablet is erected by the bereaved wife and mother who sorrowing, yet not without hope, humbly trusts throu. the merits of a blessed redeemer that they all will finally meet in the temple not made with hands eternal in heaven."
The plaque is between those for R.R. Whitehead, Edward Whitehead and James Heywood Whitehead.

Radcliffe Registers Record: Married 1680 - JULY - Henry Whitehead & Ann Lawton on the 6th of the month
Henry Whitehead (B: 1813) Died in November 1815 aged 2 years & 9 months, buried on 11th November 1815 in St. Chad's Churchyard - A second Henry was Baptised at St. Chad's Church on the 10th May 1818 to John & Sarah Whitehead of Boarshurst.
**I think I have just uncovered a distant side-connection? between our trees.** A few days ago my mother in Ohio suddenly mentioned that she recalled her father (born 1904) mentioning that there was a Henry Whitehead back in his Schofield tree. Obviously this surname is an old one from Saddleworth as well. I found the Henry Whitehead in question (1818-1897) in the same farming community in Pennsylvania (Rockton, near Dubois, PA) and firmly indicated as coming from Yorkshire. I remembered my mother has a huge book of biographical sketches and history of this part of central Pennsylvania in the 1800s. I asked her to check it, and sure enough, this Henry Whitehead was listed. I?m trying to get her to send a photo of the entry, as the book is too large to scan safely.
In summary, he was definitely from Yorkshire. He started and operated a woolen factory near Rockton, PA for 6 years and then started farming. His parents were a John Whitehead and Sarah Schofield. His known siblings were James, Robert, Abraham, John and a Mrs. Eliza Lawton of Philadelphia. I have a photo of his gravestone in Luthersburg, PA from Find-a-Grave. Also, this history book indicates that his maternal grandfather was a James Schofield, who also immigrated to Philadelphia.
Although not confirmed 100%, it would seem that his mother, Sarah Schofield was probably an aunt of my Joseph1812. I?ve found a James Schofield listed elsewhere online as the father of John1790 (best candidate for my Joseph1812?s father) so that fits well. So this John and Sarah were probably Schofield siblings.
**Now, I?ve since found Henry Whitehead?s sister, Eliza Lawton in your online data.** I am sure she is the same one who ended up in Philadelphia. So she was born a Whitehead and her mother was a Schofield. I believe your current data has her family in the 1841 England Census and you also know of the remainder of her children born in the 1840s. She married a John Lawton around 1832, you indicate. Hers is apparently a side-branch of your Lawtons and you have nothing on her after the birth of her youngest children (twins?) in 1846.
Last, but far from least, I've attached a page from the 1850 Census for Union Township (Rockton), Clearfield Co., Pennsylvania.** My ancestral Schofields are actually on the preceding page. Some interesting questions...Burial - [date: 11 NOV 1815] [place: St. Chad's Saddleworth Churchyard.]

NOTES: on JOEL WHITEHEAD (1819 - 1897)spouse: Radcliffe, Alice (~1823 - )
Leonard Kidd has various items left by his late brother-in-law Philip Wood who died in January this year. One item of great interest is a small book entitled The Illustrated Scripture Text Book (published in 1872), which has an interleaved diary for memoranda. This has been used to record the births, marriages and deaths of relatives and others. He suspects that most of the entries were made by Frances Amelia Platt (1846 - 1919) who married Joseph Wood (1841 - 1920) in 1878 at Ebenezer Church, Uppermill. As we know Joseph Wood's mother Hannah, married Henry Whitehead in 1847.
Chad, Saddleworth on 3rd January 1744/5.Occupation -

I was going through some photos I took of plaques inside Christ Church, Friezland and found the following:
"In remembereance of Joseph Lawton, Esq. of Delph in this parish and of Charlston, South Carolina who died at the latter place April 12th 1855 aged 60. The memory of the just is blessed.
Also of three infant children of Joseph Lawton and of S. M. C. Whitehead his wife, the eldest of whom, a daughter died in Charlston, Charles in New York and Heywood in Essex, their angels do always behold the face of my father which is in heaven.
I know this doesn't give parentage but perhaps you'll find a Joseph born in Delph in 1795. Good luck.
