Birth Note

Below is the only HANNAH LAWTON I can find who was born in Saddleworth about 1795, I have not verified or authenticated if she is the correct one that was mother to Thomas Lawton and who later married James Fairley. (More research needed to positively identify Hannah)

- Hannah Lawton below can be discounted, as she married James Broadbent (Farmer) and lived up at Intake Diggle for years.

Hi Trevor,

Here is a possible solution to your question re Hannah Lawton

Note that the Gravestone MI from the Lower Churchyard does NOT actually say that Hannah Lawton was buried there ? it says

??. HANNAH their daughter / who died September 17th 1856 / in the 59th Year of her age?

i.e. she could have been married (and most likely was) and would have a different surname.
In which case there should be somebody in the SHS Burial table with a first name of Hannah buried at St Chad?s Parish Church somewhere between 19th-22nd Sept, 1856 {following burial practices of the time} and that Hannah should be 58 years old at the time of her death.

?. and lo and behold ? there is one person who meets all those criteria ? HANNAH WELLS (she is in the SHS burial database, burial date 21/09/1856 aged 58}.

A check of the GRO database identifies that HANNAH WELLS? date of death was September 17th 1856?which exactly matches the gravestone. {Cause of death Dropsy, place MICKLEHURST, present at death THOMAS LAWTON (presumably the brother also mentioned on the grave)}.

A check of Ancestry identifies that a HANNAH LAWTON (father JOSEPH LAWTON, Clothier) had married an EDWARD WELLS in November 1850 in Manchester (both were widows/widowers at the time). They can be found on the 1851 CENSUS living in Hulme (Hannah identified as being born in Saddleworth). All the children living with them appear to be Edward?s.
Edward Wells dies in 1852 of consumption so Hannah who had only been married for 2 years was a widow again ? you can understand why she might subsequently be buried in her family?s grave.

Whilst this evidence is not fully conclusive ? there are a large number of coincidences to have to explain. Note, finding out about Hannah?s first husband should not be too difficult? and should help support or refute this?

Hannah LAWTON's information:

8. Leonard2 WILKINSON [368] (Leonard1), born 30 Jun 1805 in Gateshead, Durham, England; christened 1 Sep 1805 in Gateshead, Durham, England; died in England; buried in England. He married on 12 Dec 1824 in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England Hannah LAWTON [369], born 1801 in Swineshaw, England; christened 12 Apr 1801 in Mottram In Longdendale, Cheshire, England; died 16 Aug 1881 in Stalybridge, Cheshire, England; buried 19 Aug 1881 in Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, daughter of John LAWTON [730] and Hannah (---) [731].

Marriage record, St. Michael's Church, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, England, page 158, No. 473, 12 December 1824 states: Leonard Wilkinson of this Parish and Hannah Lawton of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns with consent of (blank), this twelvth day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty four, by me John Vanndforth, Curate. Leonard and Hannah made their mark = X, in the presence of Danile Slater.

Death certificate, Registration District: Ashton under Lyne, Sub-district of Stayley, in the County of Chester, No. 344, 16 August 1881, 7 Oxford Street, Stayley (USD), Hannah Wilkinson, female, 80 years, widow of Leonard Wilkinson, hand spinner, cause of death: disease of the heart, 5 months, certified by Robert Hopwood, MRCS; X = the mark of Abagail Pailthorp, daughter, 7 Oxford Street, Stalyley; registered 17 August 1881, Signed by the registrar: Godfrey Woodhouse.

I'm sure I've missed something but it must be included in the previous information I sent.

I chose this Hannah LAWTON because her death certificate in 1881 states she was 80 years old and this particular baptism seems to fit. Mottram in Longdendale is so very close to Stalybridge and the other areas you mention in your website.

Please tell me more about your Aaron HOWARD. I saw Micklehurst listed where the Lawton Mill is/was in your website.

This Aaron HOWARD that I am leaning towards was listed on the 1841 UK census for Stalybridge was that he was born in Micklehurst.

Please let me know what you think of our conflicting Hannah's. Swineshaw is between Brushes and Millbrook. How far is that from Mossley?

Would you like me to send a copy of Hannah LAWTON WILKINSON's death certificate? My computer is protected against viruses, etc. by Norton Antivirus.

Please send your family group sheet for Hannah LAWTON and Aaron HOWARD. Thanks.

Take care.
