- The Hesslegrave family and the Lawton family joined when Joseph married firstly, Elizabeth then, after her death, her younger Sister, Mary Lawton, both daughters of Joseph Lawton of Bank and Hannah Heywood. They owned land in Dobcross and had a good bank balance so it seems. Joseph Lawton built a house he called Manor House on Wood Lane in Dobcross, and when he died in 1820 he bequeathed the house to Joseph Hesslegrave and his wife Mary. Joseph Hesselgrave had aspinster sister who lived with them, and she created a school for children of the village. Their daughter Elizabeth (1827-?) also taught there until at least 1861. Joseph Hesslegrave lived there for about forty years until he died in 1864. Thereon the house was let to a Sarah Ann Gill. In 1875 the executors of Joseph's 1864 will sold the house to a Joseph Woodcock, a cloth designer of Dobcross.

Death Note

St. Chad's Burial Register - 4th October 1835 - LAWTON Hugh, aged 23 years, son of James & Mary Lawton of Stalybridge.

Head, Josiah Lawton of the Bulls (1740 - 1827) - male
b. JAN_MAR 1740 in Gatehead, Dobcross, Saddleworth.
d. 08 MAR 1827 in Wool Road, Dobcross, Saddleworth.

father: Gatehead, Jonathan Lawton of (1701 - 1771)
mother: Buckley, Ann (~1702 - )
- This Josiah Lawton is late of the Bulls Head Inn, Dobcross. Died aged 87 at Dobcross.

BULLS HEAD INN, Woods Lane, Dobcross, Saddleworth.

Jonathon Lawton was joint benefactor of his father Josiah Lawton Last Will and Testament of 24th May 1727 along with elder brother John Lawton. When John Lawton died in 1728, his brothers Josiah & Joseph were named executors of his Will and brother Jonathan is only referred to once.

In 1722, Jonathon Lawton, a clothier, (son of Josiah Lawton) married Ann Buckley and by 1760 he had obtained a licence for an Inn. Jonathon died in 1771 and his will mentions 'two very good new houses' with a brewhouse, which were presumably built to replace his original Inn around 1769.

Ann (Buckley) Lawton is listed as licensee of the Bulls head in the 1773 alehouse records, and by 1785, Joseph Buckley (perhaps a relative) had taken over. After Mr. Buckley died in 1797 the house was occupied by a surgeon named John Kenworthy. The impressive double-fronted house built by Jonathon Lawton can still be seen on Woods Lane, Dobcross.

The Memorial Inscription on the Gravestone of Grave No. 163 in the Old Graveyard adjoining St. Chad's Saddleworth Church reads:

Here was interred the body of Elizabeth (Esther) Lawton, Daughter of Josiah Lawton late of The Bulls Head Inn at Dobcross, who departed this life March 27th 1770 in the ??st. year of her age. / Also of Alice his wife who departed this life January 9th 1799 in the 61st year of her age. / Also Mary their daughter who departed this life June 18th 1799 in the 35th year of her age. / Also Betty his wife who died October 7th 1822 in the 66th year of her age. / Also the aforesaid Josiah Lawton who departed this life March 8th. 1827 in the 88th year of his age.
