The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 29th April 1916
A Saddleworth worthy of ninety seven - the late Mr Thomas BRADBURY of Fair Banks. (By Mary A. JAGGER).
On Tuesday, April 18th, I attended the funeral of the late Mr Thomas BRADBURY, of Fair Bank, Diggle who was born on January 4th 1819. It was a typical northern spring day on which he was carried from his home along an exposed moorland road to St Chad's Church, Saddleworth, to be laid by the side of relatives and friends whom he had outlived. A bracing west wind was freeing the winter bound earth. Tumultuous streams flashed silvery on the hill sides and brooks tumbled their overflow into the valleys. Snow still clung to the wild, bleak spurs of the Pennine chain, and floating rainclouds trailed over their sterile heights like grey wraiths. The scene and burial were also typical in character of the man, indigenous to that moorland soil, who had so long driven his flock across those desolate wastes of heather and bog.
Of the yeoman race, the later Mr Thomas BRADBURY was a member of one of the oldest families in Saddleworth. The name is so common in the widely scattered township that families can only be distinguished by trades, dwelling and personal characteristics. The Fair Banks BRADBURY's were originally clothiers and farmers, and afterwards combined cattle and sheep dealing with the farming industry. Son had followed father over the threshold of the hillside home in unbroken succession for over 400 years, dating from beyond the days of Thomas BRADBURY, the great-grandfather of the deceased. (At present the eldest son of the deceased, also named Thomas, and a grandson, Thomas, still reside under the roof of Fair Banks).
The late Mr Thomas BRADBURY was one of the most interesting personalities in Saddleworth township. His keen faculties were unimpaired up to his death. On his 97th birthday in January last he was not only able to relate incidents and recall dramatic experiences of past days, but he discussed present day events with fine intelligence. It was like throwing oneself back to bygone centuries to listen to anecdotes and experiences of the strenuous life lived by the hardy inmates of the hillside home struggling under Diggle Edge. Though Mr BRADBURY was light of bone and spare of flesh, his flashing eyes, quick movements, and upright form proclaimed his calibre. To listen to his reminiscences of sheep driving experiences in the days of foot pads, accounts of dangerous journeys across untamed moorlands in autumn mists or winter snows, anecdotes of local worthies, ecclesiastical and otherwise, was to hear the music vigorous winds that whistled around the weather beaten homestead. Like his forbears he was a staunch Tory of the old school. Thinking that there was something still worth fighting for in this world, he was a keen politician until his death.
It is, however, his reminiscences of the past that will prove more interesting than his political views. He was early in life "well broken in", as he was wont to say when recalling the "good old times". In his early days before the advent of railways he walked to and from Scotland to buy sheep at the famous Falkirk Fair, accompanied by dogs and a faithful shepherd who served the family 52 years. (A present servant bearing the Biblical name of Laban who has served the family 35 years to the present helped to carry his master along the moorland trackways to St Chad's). The return journey from Scotland to Saddleworth, each inch of the road to be walked by man and beast, took three weeks if there were no mishap. Mr. BRADBURY also journeyed by road as far south as London and the intervening counties to buy sheep and cattle. These also had to be brought to Saddleworth on "shank's mare".
In those days a man was unable to travel from one county to another unless granted certificates. Mr BRADBURY's papers were once stolen, and he related to me his lively experience when forced to "run the blockade" before reaching home. Nearly seventy years ago he was lost with his sheep in an autumn mist on Chew moorlands when crossing from Woodhead to Saddleworth, and he walked in a circle all night until the day dawned. I must not dwell upon meeting with "Plug" rioters on Standedge moors, led by a neighbour, the construction of the London and North Western Railway line, the making of Standedge new road and the long tunnel, his first railway ride in open trucks, his losses during snowstorms, the sagacity of his dogs in trying circumstances, etc.
He retained a vivid memory of the double murder at "Bill's o'Jack's" in 1832, and was familiar with "Joe" and "Jim", who were suspected of the crime. After the acquittal at York Assizes both men were shunned by friends and neighbours. (A similar double murder committed at Buckstones a few miles away on the same moorlands will be fresh in the memory of many readers).
Mr. BRADBURY was wont to recall the historical snowstorm of May 9th 1852, when he lost twenty lambs. Relating the incident he said: "I was going on horseback that afternoon at Marsden, and although I never broke a promise if I could help, I was forced to turn back when near the Great Western Inn, snow being already two yards deep on the roadway, and the familiar landmark obscured." It was interesting to me to know if the snowfall of last month, that was particularly heavy in Saddleworth district, exceeded the downfall of 1852. Mr BRADBURY declared that the recent storm was of longer duration, but that the fall of 1852 was of greater depth.
During his lifetime he had his shippons emptied four times by cattle plague. Neighbouring farmers had such a dread of the disease that they would not then come near the place. Mr BRADBURY had often to make navvies and quarrymen drunk before they would assist in the burial of plague stricken cattle. He acted upon his favourite quotation that "a man's best friend is under his own hat", and bravely breasted all his misfortunes. In 1877 he had a bad accident that might have killed a less hardy man. Crossing the line at Greenfield Station to unload cattle on a dark winter's night he mis-took his way and fell headlong into the road below. His sheep dog leaped after him and lay on his master's body until found the next morning. The warmth of the animal probably saved Mr BRADBURY's life. He was a man who shouldered his fair share of public duties like all good yeomen of a past day who were once the backbone of our "Merrie England". He was usually the first man to record his vote at an election contest.
At the celebration of the Coronation of King George in Saddleworth, in June 1911, Mr BRADBURY, in his 93rd year, walked with a brave front in the procession to the church. The circumstances were brought to the notice of his majesty, who sent a letter of congratulation to his aged subject. As one of the first and oldest members of Diggle Co-operative Society, he opened the new store a few years ago, and was presented on the occasion with a suitably inscribed gold key. When the London and North Western line was constructed Mr BRADBURY was one of the guarantors to the company before they would agree to open a station at Diggle.
Mr BRADBURY was the father of eleven sons and daughters, seven of whom are still alive. His wife died about twenty five years ago.
Thus an old Saddleworth worthy has been gathered to his fathers, "coming to his grave in a full age."

Moved from Lees, Ashton to Springhead, Saddleworth before 1851 Census (Not found in 1851 Ashton Census)NOTES: -This William Halliwell [1801-1877] married Eliza Lawton [1809-1854] who was the daughter of John Lawton & Elizabeth Hardy. - They had nine children. - Their eldest son Samuel [1831-1885] married Mary Booth and had nine children. - Their third child Emma Halliwell married Henry Lawton and they had six children, May, Arnold, Janet, John, and Elsie - Only Arnold had children, a son Phillip. Emma's yougest brother Thomas was the Grandfateher of Michael Halliwell. - Thier younger sister Agnes married Edward Lawton and they appear to have had three children; Marion, Lilian, and Samuel....Little is known about Samuel and need further research.
Just browsing online looking for info on William Helliwell and came upon your letter of 2005.I am not related but live in the house he built for his son .His name is on the deeds so out of interest my grandson and i have have been searching
WH (1801-1877) was married 4 times.
William Halliwell married Jane Nicholson m about 1827 - Elizabeth (Eliza) Lawton m 8th Feb 1830,they had 10 children. - Hannah Lawton May 10th 1855. - Sarah Nicholson m 1863,they had 2 children.
Samuel Lawton Halliwell was his eldest child , he lived in Prospect House and had something to do with Springhead Mill, he had 9 children.
William built our house Spring Cottage/House for next son Alfred he died in 1866 so Jane Halliwell William's next child got the house .She was married to Charles Shaw she died about 1869 and Charles Shaw inherited the house and her business Radcliffe mill.
We are having trouble finding Prosect House and Clayton House. The census says father and son lived next to each other. An Oldham business record puts Samuel at Highfield House but I don't think that is Prospect House as Highfield House was built a long time before the house that stands next to it Stoneleigh House. If father had lived in Highfield and Samuel in Stoneleigh it would have made sense they could have changed their name but Highfield was standing before Stoneleigh was built. We have old maps of Springhead but the houses aren't named. Would be grateful if you have any information,Jean.Occupation -

Marriage Note
- It may be of interest to mention that the Ann Metcalfe Lawton [wife of Bramley Broadbent] who died on 10 March 1876 in her 27th year, was baptised on 13 October 1849 at Ebenezer Chapel, Uppermill. Ann Metcalfe Lawton was the first wife of Bramley Broadbent (1846-1918). Bramley Broadbent married his second wife Mary Ann Kershaw on 10 August 1880 at Prestwich. She was the daughter of Job Kershaw, warehouseman, of 65 Dunkerley Street, Oldham. I am grateful to Prof. Leonard Broadbent for the latter information.

- A 'Lydia Chadwick' aged 20 (Cotton Weaver) at Calf Hey / 06 living with Brierley family. - Also a Joseph Broadbent ageds 23 (Carter) at Old Tame.spouse: Lawton, James (1814 - 1885)
- 1851 Census - Aged 30 (Farm Labourers Wife & Cotton Weaver) at Bowkhouses, Denshaw.
- 1861 Census - Aged 40 (Weaver by Power) at Bowkhouses- Dear Trevor Lawton
The birth records for all those children have James and Lydia as parents Jame's record shows a similar familiar name to Lydia - The information recorded by the Registrars at the time does vary slightly for Lydia's previous name 3 of the 6 show late "late BROADBENT formerly CHADWICK" which indicates that Lydia was married before. - James's birth is not a dual registration, it has been registered just the once but to help the search through the index all surnames are recorded in case someone has only one name to search for. e.g. BROADBENT or CHADWICK - The information taken at the time of registrations whether marriages, deaths or births is a legal declaration made by the couple or informants. It is possible that they misunderstood the questions at the time or the Registrar misunderstood the answer? - Have you checked that Lydia has not been married before even though she was recorded as a spinster on the marriage that you have? (Note: Lydia was aged 32 when she married James Lawton at Rochdale, so she could have been a widow, even though she is recorded as a 'Spinster' at time of marriage.)

Much confusion reigns over this couple, as apparently from information supplied by Oldham Registrars, James and Lydia had six children with three registerd in the mothers maiden name of BROADBENT, and three in the maiden name of CHADWICK, - Oldham Registrars are of the opinion that Lydia Chadwick was prviously married to a Joseph Broadbent, and the only marriage between CHADWICK & BROADBENT is at Rochdale in 1842 (Which would be about the correct timeframe).
- Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1842 (Not proven - but not from Densahw) - CHADWICK Elizabeth - Married - BROADBENT Joseph @ Rochdale, St Chad Rochdale 1842-CE11/6/34
I wondered if this 'Elizabeth' may have been 'Lydia' as no other marriage of a Lydia can be found.
