- Bit of a mystery here: - In the actual Baptism Register of St. George's Parish Church, Mossley, - There are 'Two' entries on October 24th 1793 - The first reads: - Octr 24th - JAMES TOULAND - Son of James Shaw (Clothier) of Quickwood by Mally - S. - the second entry directly below reads: - Octr 24th - JENNY TOULAND - Daughter of George Lawton (Clothier) of Quickwood by Esther - S - Then directly below these enties is: - Octr 27th - GEORGE - Son of Jervis Lawton (Clothier) of Bank by Martha - M - (The 'S' for Saddleworth and 'M' for Mottram Parish) - Question is: Could these two 'Touland' children have been orphans who were adopted by James Shaw and George Lawton, or are the entries a transcription error by the Minister.(I doubt the latter being the case). -
Baptism - [date: 24 OCT 1793] [place: St. George's Parish Church, Mossley, Lancashire.]
- Manchester, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1541-1812 about Jenny Touland (This may be a Register entry error)
Name: Jenny Touland - Event Type: Baptism - Baptism Date: 24 Oct 1793 - Parish: Mossley, St George's - Father's Name: George Lawton, Clothier of Quickwood.
Mother's name: Esther Lawton - Reference Number: GB127.L310/1/1
Footnote: Two entires in the Register on the 24th October 1793, The first is for JAMES TOULAND or ROWLAND, Son of James Shaw of Quickwood, Clothier, By wife Mally. Saddleworth.
Next entry of the 24th October 1793 is: JENNY TOULAND, Daughter of George Lawton, Clothier of Quickwood, By his wife Esther. Saddleworth.
The second entry TOULAND could well be a mistake on entry.

The Lawton's of Lawton Fold, Grotton.
On the outskirts of the village of Lees, by the side of the lane leading from Grotton to Woodbrook, stands an ancient Farmstead, which bears the name of "Lawton Fold". The land attached to the farm is not enclosed by a ring fence, as is customary in the neighbourhood, but consists of two portions, the former, which is intersected by the modern highway from Lees to Greenfield.
In a survey taken in the year 1822 the whole Estate is said to contain 19 acres 2 rods 10 perches; statute measure, the Kilncroft, the Trailscroft, the Great Meadow, the Uppermost Field, the Wellfield, the Barley Croft, the Croft, the Nearer Rough Field, and the Further Rough Field.
The Farm building itself bears few traces of antiquity, but about three years ago certain stonework was removed and a built-up doorway was once more exposed to view. On the lintel above is to be seen the inscription "L.J.A. 1677". The first letter stands for 'Lawton', the name of its owners at the time of its erection. The family has long deserted the neighbourhood, but has conferred its name on the homestead as a legacy, which remain after its former residents are forgotten.
In 1641, JOHN LAWTON and ANNA BUCKLEY were married at Saddleworth Church, and this may well be the couple whose rebuilding of their dwelling in 1677 is commemorated on the Lintel long hidden from sight by the out-building, which was recently demolished. JOHN LAWTON the Elder of Grotton, Yeoman, died in 1693. In his Will, mention is made of his three children, JOHN, JAMES, and SUSAN. His goods and chattels were valued at $38.6s.3d., a sum by no means insignificant in those far off times.
Shortly after the restoration of Charles II there was residing in Glodwick, a Schoolmaster named JAMES LAWTON, who had at one time been a Nonconformist Minister in Derbyshire. The late Canon Raines states that in 1693 this gentleman was ordained by the Bishop of Chester and became Curate of Milnrow. Two years later he was appointed to a similar position at Newton Chapel, now known as All Saints Parish Church, Newton Heath.
Though Mr. Lawton removed to Newton on accepting the curacy there, he still kept up his connection with the neighbourhood, where he possessed considerable property, being the owner of land, etc, at Count-Hill, and Fullwood in Oldham, as well as a share of the paternal estate at Grotton. Whilst living as Schoolmaster at Glodwick, his first wife, SARAH, died, and was buried at Oldham Church, and in the same hallowed ground the Curate of Newton was also interred many years afterwards. The stone covering their remains still exists and informs the reader that "The body of JAMES LAWTON of Newton, in the Parish of Manchester. Clerk, was buried here the 4th day of September, Anno. Dom. 1702. Also the body of SARAH, the wife of JAMES LAWTON, Clerk, was buried here the 7th day of November, 1685".
The Will of the reverend gentleman was proved at Chester by his executors, Daniel Milne, mercer, and John Wilde, parish clerk, both of Oldham, and is a most interesting document??The Estates at Lawton Fold, Count-Hill and Fullwood, were given by the testator to his three sons, JAMES, PHINEAS, and JOSEPH respectively. Three Score pounds were to be raised for the benefit of his daughter GRACE, wife of JOHN SYDALL, whilst her sister THEODOSIA received 5 shillings, a like sum being given to her husband, JOHN BUCKLEY, and similar small legacies were also bequeathed to their three children. The property at 'Lawton Fold', was saddled with an annual charge of four pounds, to be paid to the testator's (Second) wife, ANNE, during the term of her natural life. Her husband also conveyed to his wife, the lands at Mellor, in the County of Derby, which he had received as dower from her father at the time of their marriage. The testator, shortly before his death, added a codicil to his will by which he gave his "Great Black Cow to his loving wife ANNE, over and above the provision already made for her". Three days after the funeral an inventory of the goods and other personal estate late belonging to the deceased, was taken by Joseph Clegg, Robert Boardman, and John Jackson. The total value was estimated at $93.13s.1d.
In 1703, the year following her husband's death, ANNE, his widow, married the executor, JOHN WILD, who for a long period of forty-two years held the position of Parish Clerk at Oldham Church. His death took place in May 1722, when in the 77th Year of his age.
Of the three sons mentioned in the above will, JAMES & JOSEPH afterwards became Nonconformist Ministers in Liverpool, whilst PHINEAS, the second son, settled as a Cordwainer at Alveton, near Leek, in Staffordshire. JAMES the eldest son, enlarged the property at 'Lawton Fold' by the purchase from his cousin JAMES LAWTON, son of his fathers late brother JOHN LAWTON, of an adjoining tenement. After a brief career in Liverpool as a Minister of the Gospel, he died there in May 1707, shortly after his marriage. He left an only daughter SARAH, to whom his estate was to pass on the death of ALICE her mother.
Of the third and last surviving son JOSEPH, there is a long account in Nightingale's "Nonconformity in Lancashire". He also laboured in the Liverpool district, and for more than thirty years was minister of Gateacre Chapel, near that town. By his will, he disposed of that part of his property which lay within the "Liberty of Oldham", and was then on lease for a long term of years. The rent of his lands at Count-Hill, he divided equally amongst his four nieces, SARAH, ANNE, ALICE, & CATHERINE, daughters of his late brother PHINEAS LAWTON, and the rent derived from Fullwood, near Sholver, was similarly shared by his three nephews, JOHN, PHINEAS, and THOMAS SYDALL. From the residue of his personal estate he "Gave and bequeathed One Hundred and Twenty Pounds, to be divided equally and settled upon trustees for the better perpetual support of the Dissenting Ministers of the Gospel, officiating, or to officiate at Leek, in the County of Stafford, at Green Acres, and at Dob-Lane, at Risley, at Ormskirk, and at Gee Cross or Hyde Chapel's".
In the work quoted above is given a copy of the inscription on a Tombstone, which covers his remains at Gateacre Chapel. It runs as follows:- "Here lies the body of the late Reverend JOSEPH LAWTON, who died the First Day of February 1747 in the 63rd Year of his age. "Amongst the virtuous there is a unity in things necessary. Let there be liberty in things indifferent, and charity in all things."
Coming back to 'Lawton Fold', a further step in it's history is revealed by a document which is preserved in the vestry of St. John the Baptist Church at Lees. Through the courtesy of a friend the following particulars were gleaned from it some years ago. On June 2nd 1748, the estate was purchased for the benefit of the living of St. John's Chapel for $400, one half of which, was given by James Hopwood, of Oldham, Innholder, a trustee of the Chapel and father of it's first incumbent, Richard Hopwood. B.A.. For this sum PHINEAS LAWTON of Alverton disposed of the property. Thus ended the association of the Lawton family with the estate, which has for so long bourne their name. In 1819 the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty acquired the tithe of 'Lawton Fold' for the sum of $22.6s.0d. and presented it to "Lees Chapel".
Finally!, on March 17th 1847, the dwelling house, farm buildings, and three cottages, together with nearly 18 acres of land, were sold by public auction at the house of Benjamin Hargreaves, The Grapes Inn, Lees, thus bringing to a close the connection with the Chapel, which had lasted for no less than Ninety Nine Years.

The account, of which this is a copy, evidently appeared on the local press about the 21st January 1911.

adcliffe Baptism Register of St. Chad's - 1641 - 13 th March 1641 - Johes, fil Johis Looton, [Lawton]
The John Foley rented property at Middle Hollingreave (no 88 on 1822 map) and is in the Hearth Taxes 1664-74 and Tithe List of 1669 and is mentioned as a tenant at Middle Hollinbgreave in a deed of 1662. Mary is listed the 1662 baptisms.spouse: Foley, Mary (1660 - 1696)
John Lawton's children are listed in his will and there his eldest son is stated to be a minor and not yet 21. When it was proved in Oct 1696 he is still a minor, and his unckles were appointed guardians, hence the statements on the tree that the children were born after 1677 (should actually be 1676). I think my statement that John was born in 1677 is an error and should read Bap 1687 - a baptism of John son of John Lawton is in the registers. John Lawton, a child, is also mentioned as son of John and Mary Lawton in John Foley's will of 1688. The baptisms of Mary and Sarah are recorded but there is some doubt here as there appear to be two John Lawton's having children at thet time.

- Not quite sure about this JONATHAN - All the children are shown as being from Father: JOHN. - Could this be JOHN LAWTON of Holehouse, as there were several marriages between Lawton's & Winterbothams at Holehouse and Lane Head.spouse: Winterbotham, Martha (~1693 - )Baptism -

- Radcliffe Marriage Register of St. Chad's - Book: 1 - Page: 14 - 6th October 1713 - JONATHAN LAWTON - Married - MARTHA WINTERBOTHAM
- In the original Register of 1713 which is in a very bad state - the actual record reads: Jo (sic) Lawton & Martha Winterbotham - 6th October 1713. - Perhaps the Curate (Scribe) entered a shortened version of John to save space on the page for inscribing ' Martha Winterbotham' - It would seem logical that Jo: could be short for JOHN and not Jonathan
