Very complicated!!

The William Henry Lawton born in Stockport is your William Henry!! - He was born in Hyde at Newton Street in 1842, son of George Lawton and Hannah Eastwood, ref Hyde7/27 on cheshire bmd. Hannah registered the birth, and it doesn't say that George is deceased, although that doesn't mean to say he wasn't, because a lot of the early records are not exact. If the Registrar didn't ask her and she didn't volunteer the information, he wouldn't have known. That said, George might still have been alive then, who knows? Maybe George was still alive.

I did find a George Lawton death at Rock Hall in Stayley in 1847, but he was only 21, so he would have been too young to have fathered John Edward in 1839. A Hugh Lawton registered the death, I don't know if this means anything to you?

Whilst looking through the Registers, I found a birth of a child, Esther, born to George Lawton and Esther Barber at Brushes, so I think the other death we found is as you thought, i.e. the 'wrong' George.

I can't find Hannah's marriage to William Gregory on cheshire bmd. I was going to check that she was widowed on the certificate.

There is a death of a Hannah Lawton, wife of George Lawton, a cotton rover, in Croft Bank, Stayley in February 1844 in childbirth. I tried to find the birth to check on parents, but there is nothing registered, so it must have been a stillbirth. An Alice Lawton registered this birth. Hannah was in her 29th year.
I hope I'm not complicating things further!!

On the opposite page to Esther's birth, there was a Mary Lawton born to Alfred Lawton and Hannah Lawton formerly Lawton on Demesne Street. Is this the family Hannah Lawton (Eastwood) was living with on the 1841 census?

I think there are too many Hannah's and George's aren't there??!! - I hope this helps a bit with your research.

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, October 17th, 1908 - A Greenfield wedding.

On Saturday morning in the Greenfield Wesleyan Chapel, the marriage of Mr Edwin LAWTON, eldest son of Mr David LAWTON, of Spring Grove, and Miss Helena LAYCOCK, daughter of the late Mr Henry LAYCOCK, was solemnised, the Rev. Henry SCHOFIELD, superintendent minister conducted the service. The bridesmaid was Miss Stella WINTERBOTTOM B.A., of St Helen's, and the best man Mr Enoch LAYCOCK. The bride was given away by her mother, Mrs LAYCOCK. After the ceremony there was a reception at Fernlea Vale, the house of the bride. In the afternoon, Mr and Mrs Edwin LAWTON left for London on their wedding trip. On their return they will reside in Bristol Avenue, Levenshulme. The young couple have received many valuable and useful presents, and have the best wishes of a large circle for their future welfare.

Jonathan Lawton?s Creditors

WHEREAS JONATHAN LAWTON, late of White Lee, in Saddleworth, in the County of York, Clothier, did some Time ago by Indenture of Assignment, assign over to Samuel Scholefield, of Welly Hole, and Robert Hadfield, of White Lee, both in Saddleworth aforesaid, Clothiers, all his Estate and Effects, IN TRUST for the Benefit of, and to be equally divided amongst such of the Creditors of the said Jonathan Lawton, as should sign the Indorsement thereupon made.

NOTICE is therefore given, That the said Assignment is left with Mr. Ingham, in Dobcross, in Saddleworth aforesaid, for the Inspection and Execution of the Creditors of the said Jonathan Lawton, and will remain in his Possession for that Purpose until the First Day of November next ; at which Time a Dividend of the Estate and Effects of the said Jonathan Lawton will be made by the said Assignees amongst all the Creditors of the said Jonathan Lawton, who shall have signed the said Indorsement ; and all such of the Creditors of the said Jonathan Lawton, who shall not have signed the said Indorsement on or before the said First Day of November next, will be excluded the Benefit of the said Dividend.

All Persons who stand any way indebted to the said Jonathan Lawton, are forthwith to pay their respective Debts to the said Assignees, or one of them, or they must be sued for the Recovery thereof without further Notice. Death Note

The Reporter - 3rd April 1926 - A former Mossley Mayoress - Link with early municipal life.
By the death of Mrs LAWTON, which occurred at The Sycamores, Pwllycrochan Avenue, Colwyn Bay, on Wednesday, another link is severed with the early municipal life of Mossley. She married, in 1880, the late Alderman J. F. LAWTON, J.P., whose first wife had pre-deceased him.
In 1890-1-2, Mr and Mrs LAWTON were Mayor and Mayoress for two years, and during their period of office the Town Hall was purchased for the corporation through the mediation of Alderman LAWTON, a friend of the trustees of the late Mr George MAYALL, who built it as a private dwelling in the sixties.
The Town Hall was opened on May 7th, 1892, and was perhaps the best bargain the Mossley Council ever made, as the purchase price was only a few thousand pounds.
Mrs LAWTON was therefore the first Mayoress to preside in the Mayor's Parlour, and to institute the monthly "At homes" for the ladies of the borough. Mrs LAWTON was imbued with a grace and dignity worthy of her high office.
She was also (with her late husband) a prime mover in the erection of All Saints' Church, Micklehurst, and she cut the first sod in November 1892, just prior to the fatal illness of her husband, who died the following month.
After the erection of the church, which was consecrated in 1895, Mrs LAWTON and family presented the beautiful stained glass east window.
Mrs LAWTON left Mossley over 30 years ago, residing a short time at Southport, and afterwards removing to Colwyn Bay, where she had lived in retirement for close upon three decades.
Eighty four years of age, she was a member of the LEES family of Oldham, which produced Asa, Job and Charles LEES, founders and builders of big businesses in Oldham in machine making, colliery and cotton spinning respectively.

- A tragic tale of unfortune with regard to this Gervas Lawton and his Family, - The occupation of 'Labourer' was very poorly paid and Gervas and his family must have been very poor, living pratically on the 'Poverty' line. Several children born from the marriage died either as babies or infants. The biggest blow to the Family was when Wife and Mother Hannah (Whitehead) Lawton, Died from Childbirth complications in 1840, along with the baby, a boy who was names JARVIS like his Father. This event must have been the ultimate heartbreak for Father Jarvis Lawton who died himself in 1846, aged 48 years, Leaving children Ann, Joseph, and Sarah, orphans at an early age.

In the 1841 England Census we find JARVIS aged 40 years, now a Widower with surviving children Eliza, age 15, Ann, age 12, Joseph, age 10 and Sarah aged 5 years. - There are no records in 1841 of the other children - JOHN, & MARY,

With regards to Mary's father, it seems a little confusing as Jonathan is a farmer, not John. - Catherine Lawton was not a witness.

On Mary's age there is a slight difference but Joseph is 24 which matches what you state with his birth being in 1851

When Joseph LEES married Mary LAWTON on the 3rd January 1851 at St Chad's Church, Rochdale, he was 24 years old, a Bachelor, a Spinner, he lived at Saddleworth and his father Daniel LEES was a weaver. Mary LAWTON was 25 years old, a spinster, she lived at Saddleworth and her father Jonathan LAWTON was a farmer. By banns. Both signed with a X. Witnesses were James CLEGG (X) and Hannah CLEGG (X).

- IGI Records state born at Gatehead, New Delph Radcliffe Baptism Register states 'Stones'

You may be interested in the attached - my great etc grandfather was a George Lawton of Lezayre, Isle of Man, who died in 1848. His tombstone states "Formerly of Saddleworth, Yorkshire. Died aged 64. It would appear very possible that he is thus the George christened 31/5/1784 at gatehead. He was a wool carder in the 1841c.

His parents appear to be James and Mary Holden - it seems likely that their respective dates of birth were 1743 (chr 27/12/1743 saddleworth) and 1748.

He may well have worked in the Woollen Mills at Bent Field, Road End, Greenfield, or Kinders, where he met Betty Tomson from White Lee. The couple lived initially at Binn Green, Yoeman Hey, Chew Valley, then at Frenches, Greenfield; before moving to Bedlam @ Moorgate in Uppermill. There is a George Lawton (Cotton Spinner) and Family living in close proximity to Hugh Lawton & Family @ Huddersfield Road, Millbrook, who could well be his son George.

There is also a George Lawton & Hannah living at Demense Drive in the 1841 Census with a son James born 1841 and a Maria Band aged 13 years, but no sign of Samuel born 1838 (Check: Samuel Band)) - Living next door is widow Mary Band (35) and children, obviously the mother of Maria Band, which poses the question as to realtionship with Hannah, George Lawton's wife.

- There shows up in Litchfield County in 1850 Census also a George Lawton, b. ca 1816, surely if not a brother, then close relation. By 1860 George has children he has named: Samuel, James, Hugh, Frank, Martha. Sound familiar? There are also a Hiram b. ca 1817 Eng. and Lewis b. ca 1820, Eng. in first Litchfield, Torrington Township., and then New Haven. Together there are most of the children listed in the 1841 UK Census.
