I suspect there has been a transcription error in the original 1861 Census return.......the enumerator has recorded Miles Lawton as being born in New Mills, Derbyshire and his wife Elisabeth (Dakin) Lawton as being born in Oldham, Lancashire, which is the opposite way around. Supported by the fact that brother-in-law's Robert & Thomas Dakin were born in New Mills, Derbyshire.

PRETTY WEDDING AT ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH

Charmingly attired in a dress of Ivory Satin trimmed with pearls, with Juliet cap of pearls, and carrying a sheaf of Madonna Lilies. Miss Edith Mary Allott, only daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Allott of Barkwell Lane, Mossley, was married at St. George's Parish Church on Saturday 17th February 1934, to Mr. James Brierley Lawton, youngest son of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Lawton of Archer Street, Mossley. The wedding was witnessed by many people.

The bride was given away by her Mother; who wore a dress of wine crakle crepe with hat to tone and carried a bouquet of bronze tulips. She was attended by her cousin Mrs. J. Winterbottom, attractively dressed in blue silk with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of pink roses.

Mr. Fred Lawton, brother of the bride-groom, was best man and Mr. Gilbert Batty was the groomsman. The ceremony was performed by the vicar (Rev. E. B. Clarke, B.A.) assisted by the curate (Rev. H. Dawson)

Attended by about seventy quests, a reception was held in the schoolroom, Mr. & Mrs. Lawton were the recipients of numerous wedding gifts.

Balmforth, Hannah (~1813 - ) - female
b. Abt 1813 in Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, Yorkshire
- No sign of Hannah Lawton & Family in the 1861 Census - Where did they all go???

I cannot find any trace of this Family in the 1861 UK Census or the USA Census & Passenger Lists. I have searched relentlessly and the only exception is that of Son John Balmforth Lawton who I conside I have found residing at Waggon Road in Mossley Brow, in close proximity to their 1851 residence at Mill Street. in Mossley, which was located within a short walking distance to the main 'Loading / Unloading Terminal of "Bottoms Warfe" on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, on which William Lawton was employed as a 'Boatman" - It would appear that William Lawton died before 1851 (1849), as Hannah Lawton is recorded as a Widow and Head of the family living at Mill Street, Mossley in 1851. -The Death and Burial of this William Lawton is recorded at St. Bartholomews Church in Marsden - William Lawton (Labourer) of Mossley Brow, Saddleworth, aged 39 years Buried at Marsden in Almonbury on the 19th April 1849 .

One would surmise that individuals with forenames like Phoebe, Ellen, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, would be relatively easy to locate, even with transcription errors by enumeators, but I cannot find any trace, even in the ONS BMD Records or Local BMD records; I located the Baptism of Joseph Grime Lawton, at St. Bartholomew in Marsden, but cannot find him at all in 1861 - Most perplexing! - I shall continue to try and find Joseph Grime lawton, but will give-up on Hannah and her daughters for the time being, until something may come to light about the family in the future. - I have since discovered two more children born to this family - A James Lawton born at Marsden who died shortly after birth, and a William Lawton born at Mill Street in 1849 after the Death of his Father, who only survived 14 months.

- Mill Street at Mossley Brow was a very poor area, with much poverty and a very low social/economic popualtion. The adjoining streets of Waggon Road, Croft Street and Bank Street, were a noted area of Slum Dwellings of "Two-up-two-down' Terraced Cottages with seperate 'Outdoor Lavatories' - Families at the very bottom of the Social and Economic scale, inhabited these houses and really lived in abject poverty.
