- Mothers Maiden Name could well have been 'Bradbury'spouse: Lawton, Thomas (1782 - 1830)
- QUESTION - Who is this MARY LAWTON and son THOMAS LAWTON - ??
- If we consider that in the 1841 England Census most given ages were 'Rouded' up to the nearest 5 years, i.e. A person with an age of 50 could well be aged 46 to 55, and a preson aged 22 could be aged from 20 to 25. Making this assumption with regard to our MARY and THOMAS - Then it follows that this Mary would have been born between the years 1781 and 1791 - and her son Thomas, aged 22 whould have been born between the years 1815 and 1820 - Other factors are that both MARY and THOMAS are recorded as NOT being Born in the County of Cheshire, which means they were either born in Mossley, Hartshead, Lancashire, or even Saddleworth in Yorkshire. MARY is also recorded as being a Widow, which would indicate that if she Married at 'Full-age' between 20 & 25 years of age, she would have in fact married between 1806 & 1810 - Which would follow with Thomas being Born: 1819
Further reseach has revealed that this MARY LAWTON is found to be the Widow of Thomas Lawton (Clothier) of Edge End, Dobcross, who was Buried: 2nd September 1830 in St. Chad's - Living with her only surviving children Hannah Lawton - Baptised at Holy Trinity Church in 1823 - Thomas Lawton - Baptised at Holy Trinity Chuch in 1819 - An earlier son JOEL LAWTON - Born: 1817 - Died: aged 4 months in 1818 - and daughter HANNAH LAWTON - Born: 1823 at Dobcross - Died at 'Lane in Stayley' on 13th November 1837. - Both MARY LAWTON and Son THOMAS LAWTON made the move to Manchester before the 1851 Census, and THOMAS LAWTON is to be found, now married to NANNY LOFTHOUSE at Woburn Place, Chorlton-upon Medlock where he is employed as a "Brewer' in a Beer Brewery. - Many 1851 Census records of Chorlton-upon- Medlock were severly damaged by Flood Water and rendered 'Illegible' so as a consequence mother MARY LAWTON cannot be located in 1851. -
In the 1861 England Census - I think I discovered this MARY LAWTON at Wool Road in Dobcross - Name: Mary Lawton - Age: 79 - Estimated Birth Year: 1782 - Relation: Visitor - Gender: Female - Where born: Manchester, Lancashire, England - Civil Parish: Saddleworth - Ecclesiastical parish: Dob Cross - County/Island: Yorkshire - Country: England - Street address: Wool Road, Dobcross - Occupation: Visitor - Condition as to marriage: Widow - Registration district: Saddleworth - Sub-registration district: Upper Mill - ED: 7 - Household schedule number: 26 - Piece: 3241 - Folio: 102 - Page Number: 6

The 1871 England Census was conducted on 2nd April 1871 - Nationwide - So it would follow that we should be able to locate MARY LAWTON in the 1871 Census, as she Died: 22nd April 1871 supposedly at Southport, Ormskirk. However! - An extrnsive seach of the 1871 Census records has failed to find any trace of this Mary Lawton - More detailed research is required - Perhaps a Death Certificate would indicate where Mary Lawton was living at the time of her Death. - The Memorial Inscription for her Burial at St. Chad's Churchyard does not help matters, as Mary is recorded as being in her 89th year at the time of her death. - Whereas, if Birth and Baptism records are to be belived, Mary Lawton was Born and Baptised in the Year 1778 - which would equate to Mary being 93 years old at the time of Death and not 88/89 years.
Earnshaw Farm buildings at Lane Estate are known to have been built by JOSEPH & BETTY (Kershaw) LAWTON in 1802 by the engraving on a Door Lintle above the rear door onto Earnshaw Lane. (Joseph Lawton died in 1803) - Earnshaw Lane Farm Estate consisted of Four dwellings, i.e The Main 3 storey Farmhouse with a 'Garrett' top room for spinning and weaving cloth. an adjoining house and two smaller cottages. It would appear that in 1841 - Joeseph's son, JOHN LAWTON (Clothier) and his wife MARY and Family lived in the main farmhouse, whilst MARY LAWTON and son THOMAS lived in the adjoining farmhouse. - A William Walker (Farmer) and wife Hannah & Family and also John Butterworth and Family lived next door, and a David Jackson and Family in the small cottage. - The main dwelling at Lane Estate was "OAKDENE HOUSE' built in 1770's and occupied by the HOWARD family.

- The 1851 England Census for Chorlton-upon-Medlock was severely damaged by water, many records were either destroyed or are illegible. It is a remarkable coincidence that the Census record for Mary's son THOMAS LAWTON and his Wife NANCY LOFTHOUSE si recorded at the very top of a page and remains legible.
I consider the 1851 Census return for this MARY LAWTON may never be found. - The MARY LAWTON below is also found as a visitor to Hannah Bradbury in 1861 Cnesu

- The Hesslegrave family and the Lawton family joined when Joseph married first Elizabeth Lawton, then, after her death, Mary Lawton, daughters of Joseph Lawton of Bank and Hannah Heywood. They owned land in Dobcross and had a good bank balance so it seems. Joseph Lawton built a house he called Manor House on Wood Lane in Dobcross, and when he died in 1820 he bequeathed the house to Joseph Hesslegrave and his wife Mary. Joseph had a sister who lived with them and she created a school for children of the village. Their daughter Elizabeth (1827-?) also taught there until at least 1861. Joseph Hesslegrave lived there for about forty years until he died in 1864. Thereon the house was let to a Sarah Ann Gill. In 1875 the executors of Joseph's 1864 will sold the house to a Joseph Woodcock, a cloth designer of Dobcross.spouse: Hasslegrave, Joseph H (~1784 - 1864)
In 1820 a prosperous gentleman, Joseph Lawton, had left several properties in his will to his sons, and Manor House (described as ?my Messuage or Dwellinghouse, Summerhouse, Dyehouse, Gardens and hereditaments?) to his son-in-law, Joseph Hesslegrave. - Charged against each property was a separate clear annuity of five pounds for Lawton?s wife, Mary, for her natural life, which was discharged upon Mary?s death, and replaced with a separate annuity against each property of twenty pounds for his son, Samuel, which also lapsed on the latter?s death. In the same will, Lawton charged a further four separate annuities of five pounds against each of his properties, in favour of his son, Joseph Lawton. These additional annuities were designed to continue after Joseph Lawton?s son?s own death, and to become ?a perpetual rent charge in favour of his issue... [to be applied] ...in and towards the maintenance, education, cloathing or advancements in the world of the child or children of my said son, Joseph, or their issue...? Joseph Lawton, junior, cordwainer, died in May 1868. No will has been traced. However, it seems his death prompted the transaction executed in January 1869 by Messrs Buckley, presumably acting as Trustees for (or creditors of) the surviving children of John Lawton, junior, each named as parties in the deed. By this deed, the perpetual annuity secured against Manor House was assigned to John Hirst, junior, and two of his sons, John James Hirst and Tom Barber Hirst, who had joined the partnership of John Hirst & Sons.
