Dukinfield, James Lawton of (1821 - ) - male
b. JUL_SEP 1821 in Dukinfield, Cheshire
I have some corrections on James Lawton, born 1821, son of Jonathan and Asenath Stansfield Lawton. The James you have born 1822 in Audenshaw is the son of Jonathan and Asenath. This is what I have:

1841 UK Census, age 15, living Grosvenor St., Dukinfield, UK.
1851 UK Census, age 29, living 11 Castle Street, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.
1861 UK Census, age 39, living Hyde New Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.
1871 UK Census, age 49, living 39 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.
1881 UK Census, age 59, living 53 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.
1891 UK Census, age 69, widower, living 59 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.

James married Hannah Hibbert July 22, 1845 at St. Mary, Stockport.

James died June 18, 1894 at 59 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.

They had the following children:

William born March 17, 1847 Dukinfield or Stalybridge. Baptized May 9, 1847 St. Michael, Ashton under Lyne. Info from BVRI.

Alice born July 27, 1853 Dukinfield or Stalybridge. Baptized Sept. 18, 1853 St. Michael, Ashton under Lyne. Info from BVRI.

Harriet Hibbert born April 4, 1855 Dukinfield or Stalybridge. Baptized March 23, 1856 St. Michael, Ashton under Lyne. Info from BVRI.

Elizabeth Ann born March 24, 1860 Dukinfield. Baptized May 6, 1860 St. Michael, Ashton under Lyne. Info from BVRI.

Hannah Maria born 1863 Stalybridge.

William Lawton married Ruth Shaw Dec. 1873. They had one daughter, May Lawton, born about 1892 Liverpool. His census info is as follows:

1851 UK Census, age 4, living 11 Castle Street, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.

1861 UK Census, age 14, living Hough Hill, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK, with Uncle Robert Lawton.

1871 UK Census, age 24, living 39 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.

1881 UK Census, age 34, living 23 Market St., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, UK. Note: 17 Market St. is pawnbroker - no name - is this a store?

1891 UK Census, age 44, living Hermon Hull, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, UK - Indexed LaNton.

1901 UK Census, age 54, living 53 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, UK.

James Lawton's 4 daughters were spinsters, at least through 1901. Alice, Harriet and Elizabeth Ann were at Cheetham Hill Rd. through 1901. Hannah Maria was a school teacher and was in Brighton, Sussex in 1891 and in Burnley, Lancashire in 1901.

I'll give you additional Lawton information after you've had an opportunity to verify this information.

- m. 08 SEP 1730 in St. Michael's Parish Church, Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire.

Earnshaws, Catherine (Kitty) Lawton of (1809 - 1872) - female
b. APR_JUN 1809 in Earnshaw Lane, Stayley Wood, Cheshire.
d. OCT_DEC 1872 in Earnshaw Farm, Lane, Stayley Wood, Stayley, Cheshire.

father: Earnshaws, Jonathan Lawton of (1780 - 1849)
mother: Lees, Sarah (Sally) (~1785 - 1843)
The age of this Catherine in 1841 of 25 years, which doesn't correspond with that of Catherine Born: 1809 who would have been 32 years. (More likely the Catherine born in 1814)

Daughter of Jonathon & Sarah Lawton. This could well be the Catherine aged 60, in the 1871 Census at Lane, Micklehurst. (Verify)

Lawton Apportionments 1840 on the Staley Tithe Map; 1840 - Catherine (Kitty) and Mary Lawton are Lessees for life of (Earnshaw) Lane Homesite, fields in the Clough on both sides of the stream and fields going down towards Miller Hey.

In the WILL of JOSEPH LAWTON of Ponge Houses, Micklehurst, only three daughters of his brother JOHN LAWTON are mentioned as Benificiaries, namely Hannah, Alice and Sarah, which poses the question "Why wasn't CATHERINE included". It is quite possible that this Catherine was not the daughter of John Lawton and Mary Shaw. but actually the Daughter of Jonathan Lawton and wife Sarah (Sally) Lees

1851 - Aged 40 (Dressmaker) at Earnshaw Lane, with sister Mary (23) wife of Joseph Lees (24) Cotton Spinner of Saddleworth.

1871 - Age 60 (Farmer of 4 acres) at Lane, Earnshaws, Stayley, Head of Household, also living with sister Mary Lawton (43) & her husband Joseph Lees of Saddleworth

James Wrigley (Cotton Waste Dealer) and wife Elizabeth (Betty Lawton) Wrigley living next door in 1871 with their son Robert Lawton Wrigley next door but one.

This could be Catherine born 1809 (Spinster Catherine must have taken over Earnshaw Farm on the death of her father Jonathan Lawton)

NOTES: - This could well be the JONATHON LAWTON mentioned as main benefactor in the Will of GEORGE LAWTON of 1827 who died on 11 Nov 1828.

Parents Jonathon Lawton and mother Sarah (Lees) Lawton -Batch Number C033581 St George's, Mossley.

Betty Lawton - Bapt: 4th. December 1803 - St. George's Church, Mossley
Ann Lawton - Bapt: 15th. June 1806 - St. George's Church, Mossley
Catherine Lawton - Bapt: 21st. May 1809 - St. George's Church, Mossley
Sarah Lawton - Bapt: 23rd August 1812 - St. George's Church, Mossley
Anna Lawton - Bapt: 2nd July 1815 - St. George's Church, Mossley

The father Jonathon was a 'Clothier' at Betty's birth of Staley Wood, and at Ann's birth of Moorgate, and at Staley for the rest with the exception of Anna where it states of Lane Staley.

I also looked up a marriage of Jonathon Lawton to Sarah Lees 18 Aug.1800 at Mottram. Jonathon is of Mottram parish and Sarah Lees of Ashton Parish, the witnesses to the marriage were John Lawton and Joseph Lawton. ( I suspect the John Lawton of Earnshaw Lane is the first and Joseph Lawton of Ponge the other)

Cheshire Death indexes for the years: (Jan_Mar) 1849 - LAWTON Jonathan - Died: @ Stayley, Cheshire - Tameside - 1849-STY/3/44 -Jonathon Lawton of Lane, Staley, buried 8th February 1849, aged 60 years.

- It would seem that Jonathon and Sarah (Sally) Lawton initially lived in one of the dwellings at Earnshaw Farm @ 'Lane' in Stayley Wood, later moving location to Moorgate, Heyheads, before moving district to live and work as a "Cotton Reeler" at Valley Mills near Wrigley Fold at Matley Lane in Stayley/Dukinfield around 1841. ) - At that time, there was also a John Lawton and wife Janet (Weir) Lawton living and working at Valley Mill in Matley, - It is apprent that this JOHN LAWTON died aged 33 years at Valley Mill in Matley in 1842, with his wife JANET (Weir) LAWTON dying shortly afterwards aged 36 in 1847. It would then appear that also SARAH (Sally) wife of JONATHON died not long after their son JOHN, (who was Born abt 1808 at Earnshaw's) in 1843 at 'Lane', Stayley. So it follows that JONATHON & Family appear to have returned to live at Earnshaw Lane after the death of their son John around 1842, along with his two spinster daughters Catherine and Mary. In the 1841 Census, - A Mary Lawton & her son Thomas Lawton (Widow of Thomas Lawton of Edge End, Dobcross) were occupants of the Farm Cottage, so they must have moved to Manchester around 1841-42 - Jonathan Lawton -Death Certificate 219 at Tameside - Jonathon Lawton (Farmer) of Lane, Stayley, Died 2nd March 1849 aged 68 years of Rheumatism - a Mary Lawton registered his death on 4th March 1849 -Tameside Birth Register Ref: 1849-STY/5/04

Wife SARAH (SALLY) died at Earnshaw Farm, 'Lane' shortly afterwards in December 1843, and JONATHON himself died in 1849 leaving the cottage residence at 'Lane' Earnshaws to daughters CATHERINE and MARY. - Lawton Apportionments 1840 on the Staley Tithe Map; 1840 - Catherine (Kitty) and Mary Lawton are Lessees for life of (Earnshaw) Lane Homesite, fields in the Clough on both sides of the stream and fields going down towards Miller Hey.

MARY LAWTON herself married Joseph Lees of Thurston Clough, Saddleworth in 1851 at Rochdale and the couple continued to live at Earnshaw Lane with sister/mother CATHERINE up until her death in 1872. Then Joseph Lees and wife Mary took over as residents and were still there in 1881

- I think I am definately getting my George Lawton's mixed up, as it would appear that this Hannah Lawton gave birth to a son William Henry Lawton in 1842, who was living at Binns Court, Stalybridge in the 1851 Census. Hence it follows that her husband George Lawton must have been alive in the early part of 1841, before the 1841 Census in April as his widow Hannah must have only just have been pregnant at that time when she was living with her parents at Demense Street. Stayley. So it cannot have been the George Lawton that died at Brushes.

1841 Census - Widow aged 25 with son John Edward, back living with her parents William & Hannah Eastwood at Demense Street, Stayley
1851 Census - Widow re-married to William Gregory at Binns Court, Stalybridge. with son's John Edward & William Henry Lawton from 1st Marriage & Matthew Gregory from 2nd marriage.

I reckon it is this Hannah Eastwood that married George Lawton and had two sons John Edward Lawton & William Henry Lawton. George Lawton died before 1841 and Hannah (Eastwood) Lawton and her son John Edward are to be found at Demense Street, Stayley living with her parents, perhaps she was pregnant at the time and William Henry Lawton was born in 1842 after the death of his father. This Hannah Lawton went on to re-marry to Gregory, and can be found at Binns Court, Stalybridge in 1851 with a three year old son by her second husband.

- Dates in Registers prior to 1752

Prior to 1752, the Julian calendar was in use in England. In this calendar, the new year began on 25 March each year, so 31 Dec would be followed by 1 Jan of the same year, and 24 Mar would be followed by 25 Mar the following year. This applied up to 31 Dec 1751, after which the Gregorian calendar was adopted. 31 Dec 1751 was followed by 1 Jan 1752.

To avoid any ambiguity, we record dates between 1 Jan and 24 Mar of each year prior to 1752 as dual dates. So for example, 31 Dec 1746 is followed by 1 Jan 1746/7, 2 Jan 1746/7 and so on until 24 Mar 1746/7, then 25 Mar 1747.

Sometimes the minister would not record the change of year correctly, forgetting to do it until a few days later. The information presented on our website will normally reflect the change of year at the point where it should have occurred, not necessarily where the minister wrote it.

The move to the Gregorian calendar had taken place in Europe some years earlier, in 1582. As part of this, a greater understanding of the true length of a year had resulted in ten days being 'removed' from the calendar in Europe between 4 Oct 1582 and 15 Oct 1582. After England moved to the Gregorian calendar in 1752, a similar change was made, to bring dates back into line with Europe, and 2 Sep 1752 was followed by 14 Sep 1752.

History of Walk Mill. (Walker Milne) @ Dobcross
----------------------------
Dobcross is located at an ancient crossing point of the River Tame which was formerly used by trans-Pennine packhorses as they travelled east from Lancashire into Yorkshire. - At this crossing point of the River Tame lies the site of Walk Mill, which derives its name from the way the wool was 'walked' or trodden upon to 'full' the cloth before the introduction of mechanical stocks by which the cloth was beaten with fulling hammers to felt and thicken it. - Probably the earliest fulling mill in Saddleworth, Walk Mill would have been a common meeting place for the local clothiers.

Beginning with Richard, the Lawton family ran the mill from at least the late 16th century, if not earlier, and their later wealth in buildings, land and money probably came from the monopoly held by the fulling mill in finishing locally made cloth. The size of the business can be estimated in that by 1792, Saddleworth saw the production of 36,637 cloth pieces, each priced at ?7 each. A total of 1,480,000 lbs of wool had been used in their manufacture. From wool to the innkeeping business, the Lawton family continued to be a prominent family in Dobcross through to the early 19th century.

- Dobcross is in 'Saddleworth' and reckoned in Yorkshire. - Dobbe, a personal name, short for Robert, occurs in the Assize Rolls (R., vol. xlvii.) several times. e.g. Roberts Cross

b. JUL_SEP 1754 in Manor House, Dobcross, Saddleworth.
d. 03 DEC 1820 in Manor House, Dobcross, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

father: Inn, Benjamin Lawton of Swan (~1725 - 1796)
mother: Swainscroft, Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley of (1728 - r0940)
- In 1820 - Now a prosperous gentleman. This Joseph Lawton the Elder, had left several properties in his Will to his sons, and Manor House (described as ?my Messuage or Dwellinghouse, Summerhouse, Dyehouse, Gardens and hereditaments?) to his son-in-law, Joseph Hesslegrave. - Charged against each property was a separate clear annuity of five pounds for Lawton?s wife, Mary, for her natural life, which was discharged upon Mary?s death in 1828, and replaced with a separate annuity against each property of twenty pounds for his son, Samuel, which also lapsed on the latter?s death in 1827.

In the same will, Lawton charged a further four separate annuities of five pounds against each of his properties, in favour of his son, Joseph Lawton the Younger. These additional annuities were designed to continue after Joseph Lawton?s son?s own death, and to become ?a perpetual rent charge in favour of his issue... [to be applied] ...in and towards the maintenance, education, cloathing or advancements in the world of the child or children of my said son, Joseph, or their issue...? Joseph Lawton the Younger (junior), Cordwainer, died in May 1868. - No will has been traced from him. - However, it seems his death prompted the transaction executed in January 1869 by Messrs Buckley, presumably acting as Trustees for (or creditors of) the surviving children of John Lawton, junior, each named as parties in the deed. By this deed, the perpetual annuity secured against Manor House was assigned to John Hirst, junior, and two of his sons, John James Hirst and Tom Barber Hirst, who had joined the partnership of John Hirst & Sons.

Joseph Lawton acquired considerable wealth during his lifetime and at the time of his death was described as a gentleman. He lived at the large house in Churchfields, now gone, which once stood where the green now is and which adjoined the Kiln Ditch. His decorated table tomb in the old churchyard at Saddleworth, bespeaks his importance and is itself Grade II listed.10 - Unfortunately, the rentals after 1744 have not survived and it is not until 1770 that the manor survey records further details of the tenancy:- 73. Halls, Mr Joseph Lawton - [inter alia:-] - 2 Little Fields at Dobcross to wit - . Intake 1r 20p - N. Upper part of Kiln Ditch or Garden 1r 6p.11

I have just found another family connection to a Lawton family, this is what I have found and I thought it would be of interest to you, also if you can add anything to this.

My great grandmother Clara [nee ROBERTS] BREWER came to Saddleworth to be with one sister Kate ROBERTS who married Phillip Buckley WYLD, but I have now found out that another sister Ellen ROBERTS also came and she married Frederick ESKEY. Ellen died young and childless.

Frederick ESKEY was the son of Jane [nee LAWTON] ESKEY, Jane's husband Abraham ESKEY died 6th April 1855, but after his death Jane had 2 more children, namely Frederick Eskey and William Lawton Eskey.

Baptism's at St Chad's Church, Saddleworth.
8th October 1865 - Frederick born 11th August son of Jane (Lawton) ESKEY - Dobcross - singlewoman.
30th October 1870 - William Lawton born 8th September son of Jane (Lawton) ESKEY - Dobcross - singlewoman.

When Frederick and Ellen (nee Roberts) married, he listed his father as Abraham Eskey, but this is wrong, as Abraham Eskey died in 1855. When he was baptised in 1865 his mother Jane was a widow and a single woman. It is not know who the father of Frederick (Lawton) Eskey or William Lawton Eskey was.

*****************************************************************
When Abraham Eskey married Jane Lawton on the 19th August 1850 at St Chad's Church, Rochdale, he was 22 years old, a bachelor, a joiner, he lived at Saddleworth and his father James Eskey was a joiner. Jane Lawton was 22 years old, a spinster, she lived at Saddleworth and her father Joseph Lawton was shoe maker. By banns. Both signed with a X. Witnesses were Frank Haigh Platt and Hannah Lawton [both signed with a X].

1942 - A Miss Eskey lived at Woburn Abbey, Dobcross. Probably around 1942. There is a short row of two or three stone houses and Miss Eskey lived next door to the Mitton family. This may or may not have been the Eskey family home.
Woburn Abbey overlooks Dungebooth on the opposite side of the valley to Brown Hill. There may be some information, as a starting point on the 1901 Census Return.
