1851 - Batchelor, aged 43 (Farmer) with parents Robert & Betty Mayall at Greenacres, Oldham-above-Town. with elder brother Miles.
Daughter of Robert Mayall & Mary (Greaves) Lawton de Lawton Fold, Grotton. - Relative of Daniel Henrie - She married Gervas Lawton on 1st May 1754 at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church.spouse: Well-I-Hole, Gervas Lawton of (1728 - 1813)
St. John's Lees, Burial Records state Joanna wife of Grevas Lawton of Wellyhole, which probably indicates Wellyhole at Lees Brook, rather than Well-i-hole. Friezland, but not yet proven!Marriage at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church - Gervas Lawton & Joanna Mayall Married - 1st. May 1754
Joanna Mayall was born at Lawton Fold in Shelderslow, Saddleworth about 1732/33 and baptised at Saddleworth Church on 8th February 1733, the daughter of Robert Mayall & Mary Greaves of Lawton Fold. It seems almost certain that Joanna met her future husband when he moved with his parents from Brunthill, Quickwood, to Shelderslow some time after 1741.
Children from the union of Gervas and Joanna, all born at either Shelderslow or Lawton Fold, were Mary (1755), James (1758), Thomas (1763), Joanna (1765), and Gervas (1767-1776), Ann (1760), Sarah (1761), Betty (1770), George (1772 - 1854), Samuel (1774), Betty (1776), Betty (1777), Milly or Nelly (1779).
In a footnote to the above marriage, Radcliffe Register has recorded the inscription on a gravestone in the Churchyard at St. John the Baptist, Hey, Lees, of Joanna Lawton, died 9 May 1807, in her 74th year, and her husband Gervas Lawton of Well-i-hole, died 8 Jul 1813, in his 85th year. Radcliffe correctly equated this couple with the 1754 marriage. (Note that Joanna was actually in her 73rd year when she died).
His gravestone inscription indicates that Gervas was born between August 1728 and July 1729, which corresponds to Gervase, son of the Gervase Lawton and Mary Platt of Holehouse and later Well-i-hole, Friezland, who was baptised on 8 September 1728 at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church. So it follows that the Gervas Lawton's involved in the 1721 and 1754 marriages were father and son.Occupation -

Flannel ManufacturerResidence - [date: FROM 1901 TO 1908] [place: Dacres Hall, Friezland, Saddleworth.]
DACRES HALL, FRIEZELAND.
In 1901, the house was sold by the Shaws to Joseph W. S. Lawton. He was the son of Joseph Fearns Lawton, the mayor of Mossley 1890-92 and had recently married, in 1897, to Mary Taylor Mayall, of White Hall, Mossley. He was the joint manager of Vale Mill, Micklehurst and under his father's will expected to receive one fifth of the value of the family firm, George Lawton & Sons. He had borrowed heavily to finance his household and personal expenditure and was over ?12,000 in debt but when the business was sold it realised much less then expected. He was declared bankrupt in 1906 and was only able to repay his creditors 1/0?d in the pound.
After their bankruptcy the Lawtons move to Romford in Essex and in July let Dacres to the Ashton, Stalybridge and Dukinfield (District) Waterworks who let it to Morrison and Mason, the main contractors for the new reservoir at Chew up on the top of the Saddleworth Moor. They used the building as their offices while the reservoir was being constructed and it is possible that it was used to provide some accommodation. An agreement was made that they would repair the roof, put the interior right and paint the outside.
In Kelly's directory of 1908 an Alexander Lang appears as occupier and he is the site manager of the contractors. A tramway from the "Puddle Field's clay pit at Micklehurst ran through the estate, along the Chew Valley and up to the site of the reservoir. (There is still a faint line where the track ran through the garden.) A water tower, sidings and engine sheds were built and a wooden viaduct constructed to carry the line across the small stream which ran through part of the garden.
By 1914, the house was once again a residence when it is sold by Mary Lawton to Henry Pratt, a soap manufacturer in Dukinfield and a former mayor. He died in 1915 and his heirs sold it in 1922 to Robert Norman Radcliffe, a woollen manufacturer from Stalybridge who owned Hollins and Squires mills in Micklehurst.Census - [date: 1881] [place: White Hall, Stamford Road, Mossley.]

- NOTES: - I am of the opinion that this JAMES LAWTON re-married to a "MARY" after the death of his first wife "CATHERINE" in 1813. As in the 1841 Census James is: - Aged 60 (Woollen Clothier) at James Lawton's Houses, Mossley Brow, Mossley,Hartshead, with wife MARY (60) - Son, Israel Lawton (25) & Family living next door at one side and another son, James Lawton Jnr. I suspect there has been a transcription error in the original 1861 Census return.......the enumerator has recorded Miles Lawton as being born in New Mills, Derbyshire and his wife Elisabeth (Dakin) Lawton as being born in Oldham, Lancashire, which is the opposite way around. Supported by the fact that brother-in-law's Robert & Thomas Dakin were born in New Mills, Derbyshire.

- - This is George Lawton - Son of John Lawton (Weaver) - - I am of the opinion that this Alice Kenworthy married George Lawton after the death of his first wife Elizabeth, who died in childbirth in 1844spouse: Misery, Alice Kenworthy of Mount (1811 - 1889)
- This George Lawton was born at Mount Pleasant, Lane Head, Friezland, Saddleworth in 1810, the Son of John Lawton (Woollen Weaver) and Alice (Lees) Lawton - Apparently he married an Elizabeth
There is a death of a Hannah Lawton, wife of George Lawton, a Cotton Rover, in Croft Bank, Stayley in February 1844 in childbirth. I tried to find the birth to check on parents, but there is nothing registered, so it must have been a stillbirth. An Alice Lawton registered this birth. Hannah was in her 29th year. (Born: 1815) - I hope I'm not complicating things further!! (Tameside Registrar) - This has proved to be a different George - Son of George Lawton of Stonebreaks.
This could be the George Lawton (Widower) that re-married to Alice Kenworthy in 1847 at St. Michael's Church in Ashton-u-Lyne.
1871 - Aged 62 (Cotton Rover) at 24 Demense Drive, Stalybridge. Possibly George Lawton from Wood Mill born 1808
- 13th March 1810 - George, Son of John & Alice Lawton of Mount Misery, (Clothier) -- A George Lawton Born: 1810 Living at Demense Drive, Stalybridge in 1871 with wife Alice Lawton aged 62- Hi,Trevor: I checked those references for you.
The first George who married Hannah in 1843 was a Bachelor. 1861 Census - Aged 41 (Woollen Slubber) at Slant Gate, Kirkburton, Nr. Huddersfield, with wife Lucy and Five children.
Probably returned to Saddleworth from Kirburton after the death of daughter Hannah in 1866, (Conjecture that the family suffered from 'Consumption' as a succession of deaths in the family from 1866 to 1872)
1868 - Died aged 50 at Old Tame, Friarmere, Saddleworth. on 16th September 1868.- NOTES:
GILES LAWTON and his Family must have re-located to Kirkburton, Nr. Huddersfield about 1854-55; as his son John Joseph (1854) was born in Saddleworth and daughter Mary Jane (1856) was born in Kirkburton. Must have returned to Saddleworth before 1868 as Giles Lawton died aged 50 years at Old Tame, Friarmere on 16th September 1868 and was interred in St. Chad's Graveyard on the 19th September 1868. His Widow "Lucy (Blackburn) Lawton" survived Giles by only two years, and Lucy's death is recorded in the St. Chad's Burial Register as "of Windy Harbour, Roebuck Low, Strinesdale" - Whereas Oldham Death Register has Lucy being of "Bowkhouse", Denshaw. Lucy died on the 21st May 1870 either at Windy Harbour or Bowkhouse, and was buried at St. Chad's Graveyard on the 25th May 1870.
In the 1871 Census of Saddleworth, two of Giles & Lucy Lawton's children are to be found living with their Uncle GEORGE LAWTON at Bowkhouse in Denshaw, namely JOHN JOSEPH LAWTON aged 17 and MARTHA ANN LAWTON aged 13 (Note: Martha Ann Lawton died at Bowkhouse on 22nd April 1872 an was buried at St. Chad's Graveyard on 25th April 1872) Whilst two other children JAMES RICHARD LAWTON & MARY JANE LAWTON remained living in Kirkburton, Nr. Several queries arise regarding this Charles Moseley - In the 1841 Census he is to be found lodging with Robert & Hannah Lawton @ a Public House on Huddersfield Road, Millbrook, Stayley, Cheshire. He apparently met and married Margaret Lawton and they married in 1849 but @ Wortley, Nr. Stocksbridge, West Yorkshire, which is rather strange as traditionally the marriage always took plce at the 'Bride's' Church of Worship. Question is 'Why would they travel all the way to Wortley, when they both lived in Stayley."?. Another question to be raised is: Was Margaret Lawton somehow related to the Robert & Hannah Lawton of Huddersfield Road.spouse: Lawton, Margaret (1824 - 1902)
