1841 Census - John Edward Lawton aged 2 years at Valley Mills, Matley, Stayley, Cheshire, with parents John & Janet Lawton and elder brother James (4) with Grandparents Jonathon (61) and Sarah (Sally) Lawton (56) living next door.
Confirmation byTameside Registrar: - Hi, Trevor, This John Edmund is confirmed as the son of John and Janet (Weir) Lawton. Kind regards: Josie (Tameside Registrar)
It would appear that when his father JOHN LAWTON died in 1841/42, Mother Janet Lawton who originated from Argyll in Scotland may well have taken her two children and moved in with parents. As in 1881 this John Edward Lawton is found at Kirkdale, North Lancashire, living with the FOYER family who must have been related to mother Janet.
This JOHN EDMUND LAWTON was born at Matley Lane, Stayley, Cheshire to Parents JOHN LAWTON & JANET (WEIR) LAWTON. His father JOHN LAWTON died at Valley Mill, Wrigley Fold, Matley in June 1841, and it appears that widow JANET LAWTON moved location back to Earnshaw Lane to live with her LAWTON relatives. JANET (WEIR) LAWTON died at Earnshaw Lane, Stayley, in March 1847, leaving John Edmund an Orphan. In the 1851 Census JOHN EDMUND was to found living with his (Cotton Waste Dealer) Uncle JAMES and Aunt MARTHA LAWTON at Victoria Street, Mumps, Oldham. But by 1861 JOHN EDMUND had moved to Kirkdale, Everton, Liverpool to live with his mothers Sister AGNES (WEIR) FOYER where he was occupied as an Engineer, possibly working alongside his Uncle John Foyer. It appears that his Uncle John Foyer may well have died in that decade, as in 1871 Aunt Agnes Foyer is a Widow, and JOHN EDMUND has returned to his occupation in the Textile Industry as he is found working as a Cotton Brokers Clerk in a Cotton Warehouse at Kirkdale, and in 1881 Census, JOHN EDMUND is still a Batchelor aged 42 years and employed as a Cotton Warehouseman and living with Aunt Agnes Foyer at Kirkdale.Below is the record for Alexander Foyer the child of Agnes Foyer who was Aunt of JOHN EDMUND LAWTON - which goes to prove that John Edmunds mother was indeed JANE WEIR.

36 YEARS A SCHOOLMASTER
------------------------------------
Saddleworth friends learned with regret of the death of on Sunday, of Mr. John Joseph Lawton, of Wharmton Vale, Greenfield. He was 68 years of age and died following an illness. For 18 years he was headmaster at Greenfield Council School, and previously was a schoolmaster at Christ Church Central School, Ashton, for 18 years. He retired during the war.
A native of Uppermill, he had a close and lifelong association with the Ebenezer Congregational Church and Sunday School and at periods held all the offices in conection with them. Mr. Lawton was well liked by the scholars at both day schools and during the time he was headmaster of at Greenfield Council School between 50 and 60 pupils under his care were successful in winning scholarships, a record unequalled by any other school in Saddleworth and is surpassed by few of the schools of similar standing, elsewhere.
Mr. Lawton was a most pains-taking and encouraging "head", whose main object was to always bring out the best possible in every scholar under his care. Mr. Lawton was one of the founders of the Greenfield Dramatic Society (now defunct) and had produced plays for them and also the Ebenezer School.
He was twice married and leaves one daughter by his first marriage. His eldest daughter Kathleen, pre-deceased him earlier this year. His second wife was Miss Lucy Knott, a daughter of the late Mr. A. W. Knott, who was Liberal Agent for the Colne Valley Liberal Party.
The funeral took place at Friezland Church on Thursday, preceded by a service at Ebenezer Congreational Church, conducted by by the Rev. J. E. Cooper.
Mourners were: Mrs. Lawton, Miss Joan Lawton, Mr. R.W.Lawton, Miss A Lawton, Mrs. L. Lawton, Mr & Mrs. F Knott, Mr. & Mrs. H. W.Knott, Mrs. H. Dawson, Mrs. Grundy, Mr. J.Wood, Mr. S.C.Wood, Mr. D.J. Peet.
The bearers were nephews, Messrs; H. Lawton, E. Lawton, Jack Lawton, R. Lawton, and Jim Lawton.
The funeral was conducted by Messrs; William Hewkin and Son, Dobcross and Uppermill.Occupation -

Thanks very much for forwarding this result of the DNA Test -. I was traveling last week and wanted to have a close look at Ian?s FTDNA results before replying.
As you have probably already gathered, this is a negative result, indicating that you do not have the U152 mutation. If I?ve understood Ian?s email correctly, you have previously done STR testing at FTDNA to 37 markers and have been declared a match to Ian. If that?s the case, we can safely assume that he is also negative for U152. I spent some time this afternoon looking at his 111 marker FTDNA results and have been unable to find any other Y-DNA STR results that are similar in publicly accessible websites and databases. I assume that neither you nor he have any promising connections to other surnames per FTDNA?s matching system either. I did look at an old archived copy of the Davenport DNA site (they have locked the updated site away so that only members can see it) and did not see any near miss STR results that could be considered a match.
If it is indeed the case that you and Ian are basically isolated, with no other STR matches, this is a bit of useful information itself. I have a slight variant of that situation in that although I match more than a dozen surnames who probably all share a common ancestor with me around the year 1000 AD, ours is an isolated cluster, with no other matches more recent than 2500 years ago. As you may know, DNA testing is illegal in France, and with FTDNA?s matching criteria typically cutting off anyone more than 1000 years ago as not related, it may well be the case that the missing early branches are all living in France, having not come to England around the time of the Norman conquest.
To make up a story that might fit with what we know, I wonder whether your Lawton line might have been the original Lawtons, coming to England from France after the Conquest (assuming the Lawton surname in England) and whether the RealmOfLawton man (known to be U152) might be descended from one of the Davenport U152 lines having married an heiress from the original Lawton line. Your line could be from a younger brother of an earlier generation, and hence not heir to the Lawton holdings under the rules of primogeniture, whereby the heir would only ascend to an earlier uncle or his children if there were no sons or daughters. Unfortunately, such a scenario is difficult to prove or disprove from your DNA or Ian?s unless a new informative match shows up.
If you or Ian do have other STR matches who have more specific haplogroup assignments from FTDNA, that might offer a clue as to what else to test for, but otherwise, even more detailed testing, like FTDNA?s Big Y test, while no doubt yielding a haplogroup more specific than FTDNA has been willing to guess, would probably not be genealogically informative at this point. That could change as future matches show up.
If it is okay with Ian, I can also forward his STR results to Kyle Davenport (who I cc?d in our original correspondence) to ask him to have a look at the latest Davenport STR results to see if there are any newer promising matches not accessible to me. Please feel free to forward to Ian, or let me know that it?s okay to discuss with him the negative U152 result we obtained from your sample.
Finally, a big thank-you for being willing to provide the YSeq sample for testing. Even though it was negative, there is definite satisfaction in knowing that the lead has been followed!
Best Regards,
RogerOccupation -

- St. George's Parish Church - Baptism Register - 11th January 1778 - MARY LAWTON - Daughter of Joseph Lawton of Lane (Clothier) by his Wife Betty - Mottram Parish.
- St. George's Baptism Register - 1790 - 27th June 1790 - JAMES LAWTON - Son of Joseph Lawton of Lane (Clothier) and Betty his Wife - Mottram Parish- The Last Will and Tetament of JOSEPH LAWTON (Clothier) of Lane in Stayley, in the Parish of Mottram in Longdendale in the County of Chester, Clothier.

I have now sorted out the error with this Joseph Lawton - He was definately the Son of George & Mary Lawton of Lane in Stayley, who Married Mary Shaw and had three children George, Betty and Ann. This Joseph Lawton died aged 28 years on the 13th May 1803, and is buried along with his Father George in St. George's Churchyard Mossley. (See: FindaGrave.com).. - He was the father of three children - GEORGE, (1799) - BETTY, (1801) - and ANN (1803) - Son George Lawton would have been only 4 years of age, when father Joseph passed away, - Betty only 2 years and daughter Ann just a baby. as she was Baptised the same day as her father Joseph was Buried at St. Georges Church, Mossley.spouse: Shaw, Mary (1778 - )
On the record of 'Schofield' baptisms at Mossley Methodist Chapel, it is stated that JOSEPH LAWTON husband of MARY and father of BETTY (Schofield) died between the dates of June 1825 and August 1827 whilst living at Hazlehurst. - But this is questionable as it may be refering to Joseph's father George who died in 1828
