- I am of the opinion that a recording ERROR by the Curate (Richard Whitelock) was entered in the Burial Register at the time....this BETTY LAWTON may have died as a result of Childbirth Complications from the Birth of Son WILLIAM LAWTON - who died as a baby on 18th January 1839 - BETTY his Mother died on the 21st September 1838 and was Buried on the 23rd September 1838 in her 39th Year (Headstone MI) yet the Burial Register has the BETTY as the Wife of WILLIAM LAWTON of Woodbrook, which is incorrect.

father: Lawton, James (1748 - >1800)
mother: Booth, Ann (~1750 - )
- NOTES: for HUGH LAWTON: - Grand-Son of Gervase Lawton

This Hugh Lawton must have resided in Mossley during the early years of his marriage until around 1817-18 as his first three children were baptised at St. George's Parish Church, Mossley, Hartshead, Lancashire. From 1818 it appears the family resided at Huddersfield Road, Stayley until the death of wife Martha in 1836 then the family emigrated to Connecticut, USA in 1850 - recorded in Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943

Immigration records for Hugh Lawton (spelled in this instance, Laughton) found on Ancestry.com 4/14/2007; database New York, 1820-1850 Passenger and Immigration Lists> I have a print-out of the actual ship manifest in my records:

Name: Hugh Laughton (Lawton) - Age: 60, Male - Port of Arrival: New York - Date of Arrival: July 8, 1848 - Port of Departure: Liverpool, England - Ship: Yorkshire
- Family: 1125225 - Microfilm serial No: M237 - Microfilm Roll No: 73

Hugh was listed as a spinner. On board and listed with Hugh were the following family members:
---------------------------------------------------
John Laughton - Son - age 35, Male, Spinner
Hugh Laughton - Son - age 22, Male, Spinner
Frank Laughton - Son - age 18, Male, Spinner
Ann Laughton - Dau - age 17, Female
Betsy Laughton - Dau - age 26, Female - ( This is the wife of Hugh's son Joseph Lawton)
John Laughton - G/Son - age 6, Male
Edwin Laughton - G/Son - age 3, Male -
Hugh Laughton - G/Son - age 8 months, Male - (Births Dec 1847 - LAWTON Hugh born @ Ashton &c - 1847-Dec-20/170 - 1847-STY/4/40 - Tameside)
Martha Laughton age 23, Female - (Is this wife of one of the son's)

Research into this family indicates that Hugh Lawton was born about 1784 in Stayley, Cheshire, and married Martha Shaw at St. Michaels Parish Church, Mottram-in-Longdendale on 5th November 1810, with a George Lawton as witness, perhaps a brother. Early children from the marriage were all baptised at St. George's Parish Church in Mossley, Lancashire, which may indicate that the family may have been living in either Mossley Parish, Stayley Wood or Stayley Bottoms at that time. Son Hiram Lawton born in 1818 seem to have been the exception, having been baptised at St. Michael's Church, Mottram.

Naming conventions of the time usually dictated that the first born child of either sex be named after the fathers parents...so if this Hugh & Martha followed this practice then it follows their first male child was named JAMES and their first daughter was named ANN.

Their son JAMES LAWTON obviously was the first person to emigrate to the USA and apparently arrived in Connecticut around 1837 as in the 1850 US this James was married to Rebecca White and was the father of three children.

Father Hugh Lawton was to be found at Huddersfield Road, Stayley, Cheshire in the 1841 UK Census, a Widower, aged 50 (ages rounded up or down to the nearest 5 years in 1841) with six children. His wife Martha (Shaw) Lawton having died on 1st November 1836 aged 44 years and buried at Mottram Churchyard on 3rd November 1836, just two days before 26 years to the day of her marriage.

- NOTE: According to www.familysearch.org, during the 1780's (and one in 1790) several little Hugh Lawtons appeared on the scene and were christened in Mottram-in-Longdendale all of whom would have been in their 20's at the time of Hugh and Martha?s marriage:

29 Feb 1784, son of James Lawton and Ann
27 Mar 1788, son of Joseph Lawton and Betty
26 Oct 1788, son of Gervase Lawton and Sarah
30 Nov 1788, son of Hugh Lawton and Sarah
27 Jun 1790, son of John Lawton and Hanah

Of the above couples, two also had a son named George, who could have become the witness George Lawton, who stood up with Hugh when he married Martha Shaw:

George, born 24 Oct 1784, son of Gervase Lawton
George, born 7 Oct 1786, son of Joseph Lawton and Betty

Of these two possibilities, I would favor Joseph and Betty. The family name Joseph which, along with Hugh, George, Martha, James and John saw repeated use in this branch of the Lawtons; Gervase did not show up at all in this line.

Eleven months before George was born, Joseph Lawton married Betty Broadbent in Mottram-in-Longdendale on 7 November 1785. And here is where the James B might come in as Betty?s father was James Broadbent (born 1736 Dec 26 in Mottram-in-Longdendale, he married a Mary Wrigley of which there were two; one born 1741/42 Jan 24, daughter of John Wrigley and Martha Lees and the other born 1738 Aug 14, daughter of Joshua Wrigley and Anna Cooke).

This Joseph Lawton (probably the son of a George Lawton and Ann) had siblings named George, Hugh, Betty (three of them, who did not live long) and Ann.

1851 - Aged 42 (Carter) at Bottoms, Micklehurst, Stayley Son of James & Ann Lawton of Bottoms Living next door but one to James Lawton (66) Shopkeeper at Bottoms. who may well have been father of Jonathon. If Jonathon had a sister Hannah born 1807 who married Richard Buckley (Barkwell) ??? -

Confirmed that it was this Jonathon Lawton that married HANNAH (Dennerly) BUCKLEY at St. Michael's Church, Ashton-u-Lyne in 1854 - An ISRAEL LAWTON was witness at Jonathon's marriage to Eliza Howard in 1835.

It would appear that this Jonathon Lawton died in 1860 without any MALE heir, as his entire estate was left in trust to the benefit of his 2nd Wife/Widow Hannah, and his four daughters. (See Jonathan's Last Will & Testament)

The 1841 Census of Saddleworth has Giles Bradbury & Family at Uppermill / 62

PRO Ref: HO/107 Piece: 1279 ED: 7 Page: 14 Volume: 1 - Family: Uppermill / 62 (High Street, Wade Lock)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giles Bradbury - Head - 24 - Cloth Finisher - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Harriet Bradbury - Wife - 24 - Housewife - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
John Bradbury - Son - 4 - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Esther Bradbury - Dau - 2 - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

Given accepted naming conventions of the day - The first born son would probably be named John after Giles's Grandfather. The first born daughter Esther after Giles's Mother, and the second Son, William after Giles's Father. (Second son William was born in 1841). Thomas Bradbury would be Giles's elder brother and both have the same trade as Woollen Cloth Finishers.

Another significancant fact is that living just next door but one to Giles Bradbury and family was -

PRO Ref: HO/107 Piece: 1279 ED: 7 Page: 14 Volume: 1 - Family: Uppermill / 59 (High Street, Wade Lock)

William Bradbury - Head - 68 - Woollen Weaver - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Esther Bradbury - Wife - 66 - Housewife - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Thomas Bradbury - Son - 28 - Cloth Finisher - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

One would suspect, and it would be reasonable to believe, that this William & Esther could well be the Parents of Giles Bradbury.

Further research of Radcliffe Registers revealed: William Bradbury (Born: 1773) - Married - Esther Waterhouse (Born: 1775) at St.Chad's Parish Church on 22nd October 1795. Radcliffe Baptisms have records of William Bradbury - Baptised 4th January 1797 - Robert Bradbury -Baptised 1st October 1797 - John Bradbury - Baptised 9th December 1798 & William Bradbury - Baptised 6th January 1800 - All these children were born at 'Bakestone Pit'

Also of note is that a 'Mary Bradbury' aged 25 was employed as a Female Servant at the Alehouse of Joseph Ashton, then named the 'Queen Adelaide', but a year or so later re-named 'The Granby Arms'. (Prevoiusly 'The British Queen')

PRO Ref: HO/107 Piece: 1279 ED: 7 Page: 15 Volume: 1 - Family: Uppermill / 68 Granby Arms Inn, Wade Lock, Uppermill.

Joseph Ashton - Head - 50 - Innkeeper - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Mary Ashton - Wife - 66 - Innkeepers Wife - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Mary Bradbury - Serv - 25 - Female Servant - Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

It would be reasonable to believe that this 'Mary Bradbury' was also a daughter of William & Esther Bradbury and a sister of both Thomas & Giles Bradbury.

The only other 'Bradbury' family around that part of Uppermill in 1841 were living near Dam Head Mill and were 'Woollen Manufacturers'.

BRITISH QUEEN BEERHOUSE at Wade Lock, Uppermill.

The British Queen Beerhouse at Wade Lock had a brief existence in the 1850's and 1860's, when it was tenanted by Giles Bradbury, a Woollen Dyer by trade. He is mentioned in a Police Report of 1859, described as drunk and roaming the streets of Uppermill with three other men.

The Census of 1861 found that Giles was a family man. His wife was called Harriet and they had eight children living at the British Queen with them. The eldest son, John was a Wool Cloth Dresser and William Bradbury was a Flock Dresser. - In the same year Giles was in trouble again, charged with assaulting one William Schofield in an incident concerning his son John.

In 1863 there were money troubles. On 14th January 1863, Thomas Shaw sued Giles Bradbury in the County Court for $11-10-6d. which was payment for goods sent to the British Queen the year before. Giles admitted he owed some of the money, but didn't know how much. The Court ordered him to pay, despite the plea that he had a family of eleven, all out of work.

A month later there was another summons, this time from the owner of the Beerhouse, Miss Elizabeth Harrop. The quarterly rent for the British Queen was $5 and it was overdue. Giles offered to pay off the debt at 10 shillings per month, but the Judges sympathies were with Miss Harrop and Giles was ordered to pay the 5 pounds within one month.

The next recorded court appearance, in May 1863, was of Giles's son John, who was charged with unlawfully assaulting his Mother. Mrs. Bradbury said John had came home drunk one evening and began to beat her and now she was in fear of him. The magistrates bound him over to keep the peace with a 20 pound surety.

By 1865 Giles Bradbury was no longer a Beerhouse Keeper, but he managed to find the rent for the house at Wade Lock for many years afterwards. The 1891 Census shows that he and Harriet were still living there, and Giles was an 80-year-old Lamplighter. (Saddleworth Pubs by Rob Magee)

Giles Bradbury who married Harriet Mills in 1836 at St. Chad's in Rochdale. Giles Bradbury was born ca 1815 and died in early 1901. He and Harriet had 8 children. Family folklore intimates he was related to the 'Bills-'O'-Jacks' Bradbury's, and his Gravesite which is situate at the side of Bills-'o'-Jack's grave in the Lower Graveyard of Saddleworth Church, would appear to substantiate this. Giles Bradbury and his family initially lived at DEN in Uppermill where they where neighbours of William Bradbury (son of the BILL of the Bills O Jacks murder) and his son.

Giles Bradbury was the only recorded Landlord of the 'British Queen' Alehouse at Wade lock in Uppermill from 1859 to 1863. Thereafter he moved into a rented cottage at Wade Lock living next door to his son THOMAS on the one side and also next door to George Lawton & Elizabeth (Rhodes) Lawton, parents of William Lawton, who was later to become the first husband of Sophia Mills Bradbury.

In the 1881 Census of Saddleworth, Giles Bradbury was still married but recorded as a 'Masons Labourer' and the only occupant at 'Toll Bar House', Wade Lock, Uppermill. Aged 76. Whilst his wife Harriet (65) was to found at Clay (Terrace) Houses at Holehouse in Micklehurst, closeby Ashton & Mossley Gas Works, living at the home of her daughter Eliza (Bradbury) Holden and Family.

"January 12 1901 (Oldham Chronicle) - DEATH OF "OLD GILEY " OF WADE LOCK

One of the best-known residents of Uppermill, Mr Giles Bradbury, of Wade Lock died on Monday morning [Jan 6th] 1901, at the ripe age of 89. He came from an old Saddleworth family and was a Nephew of the famous Bill o' Jack's Bradbury, who was so foully murdered in the early part of the last century. He had lived in the neighbourhood of Wade Lock for practically the whole of his long life.

Many years ago he kept a public house known as the British Queen and in those days was fairly well-to-do, owning the whole of the property at Wade Lock. His house adjoined the main road and many pedestrians have felt the effects of his caustic tongue. He had a word or many words, with all who passed by, and it was woe-betide any who had the hardihood to differ with his observations. A pipe of tobacco, however, was always an efficacious peacemaker. Under the old dispensation he served the district as lamplighter for a time, and for some reason which was never fully explained he finished his duties with a small balance owing to him. The Board which incurred the liability went out of office, but Giles never forgot the public obligation. While members were engaged in some important business the Boardroom door would be suddenly flung open and Giles, always straight and tall as a sapling, would stalk into the room and demand in language more forceful than polite the money owing to him. If his title was denied there was a scene in which members of the Council played anything but the principal part. Then one with more diplomacy than the others would suggest that the matter be adjourned for inquiries and Giles would be induced to leave. For years Giles was a frequent visitor at the meetings and at last in desperation members passed a resolution that he be given a sovereign in settlement of all claims against the public body. He leaves seven grown children."

* Then in a separate item on the same page:-
"Thursday afternoon was a busy time at the Saddleworth Church, there being no fewer than four funerals, all of men. The bodies interred were those of Mr. J. Walker, of Uppermill; Mr. John Stopford, of Diggle; Mr. Giles Bradbury, of Uppermill; and Mr. Robert Radcliffe, of Scouthead.
The body of Mr. Giles Bradbury was borne to its last resting place by eight grandsons, being placed side by side with the remains of his two relatives who were murdered at Bills o'Jacks."

There is much conjecture over Giles Bradbury's actual age, as in the 1841 Census he is recorded as 24 years of age and so is his wife Harriet. In the 1861 Census Giles is 47 years old and Harriet also. Whilst the 1881 Census only records Giles at Wade Lock and not Harriet, where he is found to be 76 years of age. At the 1891 Census he was ??? and his last recorded age was that in the 1901 Census where he is given as being 89 years of age. (It would follow that the age of 76 as recorded in the 1881 Census is possibly a transcription error which is more likely to be 66 years)

In the 1881 Census; Giles Bradbury's son William is to be found at Micklehurst Road, Mossley, Cheshire.

Giles Bradbury's Gravestone which is right next to that of Bill o'Jacks in the bottom left hand corner of the Lower Graveyard, records his age as 91 compared to the 89 reported in the paper. So it looks as if he would have been born between 1810 to 1812. The stone also lists his wife Harriet and sons John Bradbury and Joseph Mills Bradbury who predeceased him.
I think on your site you have Giles as born about 1790 which must be a different Giles and also that Giles may have been uncle to Bill o'Jacks rather than nephew. I have not been able to find a baptism record for my Giles in Saddleworth (it is not in the 1800 to 1888 baptisms microfilm in Oldham Local Studies).
My uncle James' brother-in-law Geoffrey Woodhead is a local historian who you met when you visited James, and he has spotted that in the 1851 census Giles claimed he was born in Marsden, but so far we have not been able to find any trace of a baptism record there either. I assume that Giles wife was born Harriet Mills as the name Mills is used as a second name for both Sophia and Joseph, but I have not been able to find a record of Harriet's birth or of her marriage to Giles.
