The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 24th August 1935 - Greenfield Veteran - Death of Mr ALFRED SYKES.

Mr Alfred SYKES, of Park View Greenfield, one of the best known and most remarkable men in Saddleworth, died on Monday following a short illness. In his 85th year, he had, up to quite recently, enjoyed the best of health, and both in mind and body was as active as a man thirty years his junior. Smart in appearance, and a keen business man, he was one of the G.O.M. of the district. Son of the late Mr Jabez SYKES who, it is said, used to bathe summer and winter in what is know locally as "Jabez Bath" in the heart of Chew Valley, Mr SYKES built up the present prosperous business of Messrs. SYKES and Sons., provision dealers and corn merchants, of Uppermill and Greenfield. He retired some years ago, and handed over the business to his sons, but always retained a personal interest in it.

Fond of sport, he was often present at cricket matches, and attended almost every football match at Mossley, despite the weather. "Fresh air and plenty of work if you want to keep fit", was his motto, and he thrived upon it. He leaves a widow, five sons and three daughters.

The funeral took place at Saddleworth Cemetery on Thursday, preceded by service in Saddleworth Church, Rev. Albert SYKES, curate of St Peter's, Levenshulme, a grandson of deceased, conducted the service and officiated at the graveside. The family mourners were: Mrs SYKES (widow), Mr Herbert SYKES, Mr and Mrs J. T. SYKES, Mr and Mrs Fred SYKES, Mr and Mrs Harry SYKES, Mr and Mrs H. W. KNOTT, Mrs Eric SHAW, Mr and Mrs David BUTTERWORTH, Miss B. BESTOW, Mr and Mrs Jack SYKES, Mr and Mrs Frank SYKES, Also present were Mr C. COATES and Mrs E. LAWTON.

Among others who attended were: Mr and Mrs Robert RHODES, Messrs H. SHAW, John BUTTERWORTH, H. RHODES, H. A. TANNER, J. E. TANNER, N. RHODES, Wm MITCHELL, Councillor B. DRANSFIELD and Mr and Mrs Fred KNOTT. Floral tributes were from: Widow and Herbert; John and Rene; Fred, Cissie and Albert; Harry and Mary; Harry, Sarah and family; Ethel and family; David and Annie (five great grandchildren); Frank and Edith; Dora and Eric; Jack and Doris; Fred and Bertha; Mr and Mrs R. RHODES; Mr and Mrs BOTTOMLEY; Mrs BUTTERWORTH and family (Fern Lea House); Mr and Mrs C. COATES; Mollie and Fred; Mayor and Mayoress of Mossley; Mrs BARLOW; Mrs Youdell SHAW; Mr and Mrs V. L. MORTON (Mossley); D. HALL and family; Greenfield Cricket Club; employees at Messrs. H. & H. SYKES; all at the surgery. Messrs. O. SCHOFIELD and Son, Uppermill, were the funeral directors.

Don't remember if I have sent you this information before, but I find that there is a 2nd connection to the Lawton line, although not in my direct line. It begins with John Holden and Ann Shaw married 1761 St. Chads and follows through their son Martin, 1796 (youngest brother to my Buckley Holden) and his wife Sarah Heigh. Next in the line is their daughter Mary Ann (b. abt. 1841) who married a John Holden from Primrose(haven't figured out if he is related or not yet) Their daughter Harriet Ann married John Thomas Sykes (18 Oct. 1899 St. Chads) and it was their son Jack who married Doris Lawton 6 May 1933 Ebenezer Church Uppermill.

Jack's grandfather Stephen Burrows was born about 1852-54 (dates vary) in County Down, the son of Stephen Burrows Senior and his wife Mary Jane Teuton. Perhaps the name Daniel was added later to distinguish him from his father. Stephen Jnr. was a bachelor when he married Margaret Greenlaw on New Year's Eve 1875 in Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Margaret was born in Glasgow also in 1852-54, the daughter of William Greenlaw and his wife Mary (her surname begins with B but is very difficult to read). Stephen and Margaret had five children who survived to adulthood and no doubt from the gaps in their ages several more who didn't.
