The bride is a cotton operative.The ceremony was performed by the vicar (Rev F.A. WHITEHEAD, M.A.,) and the bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr Hugh DRUMMOND, looked pretty in a dress of mauve beaute satin trimmed with silver lame. She wore a juliet cap and shoes to tone and carried a bouquet of mauve tulips and white heather.There were two bridesmaids, Miss Mary LAWTON (sister of the bridegroom) and Miss Annie OSBORNE (friend of the bride's brother). They wore pretty dresses of pink beaute satin and pink floral georgette, with hat and shoes to tone. They each carried a bouquet of pink tulips.The bride's mother was becomingly gowned in navy blue crepe, trimmed with beige and with hat to tone, and the bridegroom's mother was in brown floral crepe with hat to tone. Mr Joseph CLOUGH (friend of the bridegroom) was the best man and Mr George LAWTON acted a groomsman.Some 40 guests attended a reception at Heyrod Conservative Club. Immigraton records obtained from National Archives Micofilm Publications, sent to me via e-mail 6/12/2003 by Cousin John Platt, show James Lawton did indeed immigrate aboard the ship Constitution, Master Josiah L. Wilson, Port of embarkation Liverpool, arriving at the Port of New York December 3, 1833, Number 878. James was listed as a steerage passenger, line 5, age 20, cotton spinner, from England to United States.

This is probably our James and Rebecca. They could have had another daughter who died between 1840 and 1850... there was sufficient time.

I am wondering if James could have come across to America first, and then father, Hugh and others followed before the time of the 1850 census?

Birth Note

- The Birth of this James Lawton in 1813 is a bit of a mistery - as the Baptism Register at St. George's Parish Church in Mossley record the child born to Hugh & Martha Lawton of Ponge, Micklehurst as 'JOSEPH LAWTON' and not 'JAMES' - However this is now considered as a 'Transcription Error' by the cleric at the time of entry into the Register...as a susequent Son 'JOSEPH LAWTON' was born to Hugh and Martha Lawton at Carrbrook in 1822. - A thorough search of St. George's Baptism Registers cannot locate a 'JAMES LAWTON' between the years 1811 and 1815 - So it must be considered that it was actually 'JAMES LAWTON' that was Born and Baptised in Jul_Sep quarter 1813 to Hugh and Martha Lawton.

Death Note

The gravesite for James and Rebecca Lawton was found, and stone photographed by Jim Smith, transcribed by Joan Smith, July, 2000. Forest Home Cemetery sits on a hill to the west of where the old Forest Home Community once stood, just off Forest Home Rd., or west of corner of 90th. and Forest Home Rd., south and west of Montezuma, IA, Poweshiek Co.

Epitaph on stone reads: "Our father has gone to a mansion of rest, to the glorious land by Deity blest." On side of stone: "In memory of father and mother."

The following obituary was sent to me via e-mail by Vicki King, 1/27/2003. It was in an album belonging to a daughter of Drusilla Pilgrim:

From an unknown newspaper presumably published in Poweshiek Co., Iowa, in 1892.

"In Memory of James Lawton
James Lawton was born in England August 21, 1813, and died, at his home near Foster (sic) Home, Iowa, April 3, 1892, aged 78 years, 7 months and 12 days. He landed on American soil Dec. 3d, 1833, and afterwards married and settled in the state of Connecticut where he lived with the wife of his youth until about the year 1856, when they moved to Iowa with a family of four daughters. In 1879 he buried his wife and in 1880 was married to Mrs. Drusilla Pilgrim, with whom he lived happily until he passed out of earth life. He leaves two daughters and a number of grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Father Lawton, as he was reverently called by friends and neighbors, was a man of deep piety. While he lived in the east he was a member of the Baptist church, but since he came to Iowa his home of fellowship has been with the Christian church where he served faithfully and acceptably in the office of Deacon. During the last few days of his life, while struggling with disease, he often repeated the expression of resignation: "Father, Thy will be done." The funeral services were held in the Christian church at Forest Home, conducted by Melissa Terrell.

God, in His wisdom has recalled

Mr James Bennett LAWTON (54), who died last week end at Chorley, was an old Saddleworth sportsman. He acted as secretary to the Uppermill Cricket Club for 21 years, and his fine services contributed much towards building up the club to its present standard. Mr Bennett (?), in his earlier days, was a good footballer and was also an accomplished billiard player. During the week-end, the Uppermill C.C. members passed a vote of condolence with the relatives. The interment was on Wednesday at St Chad's.

PRETTY WEDDING AT ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH

Charmingly attired in a dress of Ivory Satin trimmed with pearls, with Juliet cap of pearls, and carrying a sheaf of Madonna Lilies. Miss Edith Mary Allott, only daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Allott of Barkwell Lane, Mossley, was married at St. George's Parish Church on Saturday 17th February 1934, to Mr. James Brierley Lawton, youngest son of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Lawton of Archer Street, Mossley. The wedding was witnessed by many people.

The bride was given away by her Mother; who wore a dress of wine crakle crepe with hat to tone and carried a bouquet of bronze tulips. She was attended by her cousin Mrs. J. Winterbottom, attractively dressed in blue silk with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of pink roses.

Mr. Fred Lawton, brother of the bride-groom, was best man and Mr. Gilbert Batty was the groomsman. The ceremony was performed by the vicar (Rev. E. B. Clarke, B.A.) assisted by the curate (Rev. H. Dawson)

Attended by about seventy quests, a reception was held in the schoolroom, Mr. & Mrs. Lawton were the recipients of numerous wedding gifts.

A LOSS TO MOSSLEY

Death of Mr. J. H. Lawton

Mossley has suffered a great-loss with the death of Mr. James Hadfield Lawton of Stamford Road, Mossley. Mr. Lawton, who was a batchelor, and 53 years of age, passed away on Sunday afternoon. He was the son of the late ex-Alderman John Lawton who was for many years manager at Messers. George Mayall and Son's Mills.

Over 30 years ago Mr. Lawton commenced practice as a Solicitor, and three years ago he was forced to give up active practice after his health began to give way. Mr. Lawton held office in the "Prince Alfred" Lodge of Freemasons and was a former member of the Mossley Vocal Society, and was for a time connected with the Christian Church at Stamford Road, Mossley. When the Voacal Society played the Opera "The Bohemian Girl" 25 years ago, Mr. Lawton played the part of "Floresteen" with great success.

A man of many parts, Mr. Lawton had eide and generous sympathies and had few equals in the town as a raconteur. Although he never held any public office, Mr. Lawton always maintained a deep and very real interest in all that pertained to the welfare of Mossley. His fine character and charm of manner made him a great host of friends, and it is given to few men in their passing to be so deeply regretted.

I also got details of James Thomas's baptism, which is attached. His mother Esther Ann is from Knowltop so it looks like she is the daughter of Joseph. I have just found another family connection to a Lawton family, this is what I have found and I thought it would be of interest to you, also if you can add anything to this.

My great grandmother Clara [nee ROBERTS] BREWER came to Saddleworth to be with one sister Kate ROBERTS who married Phillip Buckley WYLD, but I have now found out that another sister Ellen ROBERTS also came and she married Frederick ESKEY. Ellen died young and childless.

Frederick ESKEY was the son of Jane [nee LAWTON] ESKEY, Jane's husband Abraham ESKEY died 6th April 1855, but after his death Jane had 2 more children, namely Frederick Eskey and William Lawton Eskey.

Baptism's at St Chad's Church, Saddleworth.
8th October 1865 - Frederick born 11th August son of Jane (Lawton) ESKEY - Dobcross - singlewoman.
30th October 1870 - William Lawton born 8th September son of Jane (Lawton) ESKEY - Dobcross - singlewoman.

When Frederick and Ellen (nee Roberts) married, he listed his father as Abraham Eskey, but this is wrong, as Abraham Eskey died in 1855. When he was baptised in 1865 his mother Jane was a widow and a single woman. It is not know who the father of Frederick (Lawton) Eskey or William Lawton Eskey was.

When Frederick Eskey married Ellen Roberts on the 4th August 188 at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, he was 22 years old d a batchelor and a 'Clothier' by occupation. He lived at Dobcross and his father was names as Abraham Eskey a Joiner, (which was incorrect) - Ellen Roberts was 23 years old, a spinster, and lived at New Delph, her father was named as Ephraim Roberts occupied as a Farm Servant. By Banns published, Both signed, Witnesses were James Eskey and Maria Roberts.

When Frederick Eskey married his second wife Alice Roberts on the 18th August 1892 at St. Bartholamews Church, Marsden in Almondbury, he was 27 years old, a widower and a Woollen Operative by occupation. He was living at Dobcross, Saddleworth and gave his father as Abraham Eskey (Deceased) which was wrong, as Abraham Eskey died in 1855 some 10 years before Frederick was born. - Alice Roberts was aged 28 years old and a Spinster living at Marsden in Almondbury, and gave her father as Joseph Roberts (Deceased) Both Signed. 1942 - A Miss Eskey lived at Woburn Abbey, Dobcross. Probably around 1942. There is a short row of two or three stone houses and Miss Eskey lived next door to the Mitton family. This may or may not have been the Eskey family home.
Woburn Abbey overlooks Dungebooth on the opposite side of the valley to Brown Hill. There may be some information, as a starting point on the 1901 Census Return.

Thank you for your prompt reply and for the extensive research that you have carried out into the Lawton family. Maybe I can add a little information.

My grandfather, Abraham Moore married Jane Lawton on the 9th April 1890 at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, Saddleworth.

They had five children.

Eveline Moore - Born: 15th July 1891 at Sugar Lane, Dobcross. Died: 8th April 1938
(Spinster, unmarried).

Hilda Moore - Born: 3rd November 1892. Married - Maurice Buckley and had two daughters, Dorothy and Audrey, they lived at 5,Platt Lane Dobcross.

Gladys Moore - Born: 14th March 1895. married John Smith. No children. Lived in Rosegrove Lane, Rosegrove, Burnley (No 64 I think)

James Wordsworth Moore - Born 10th January 1897. Buried Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, 10 July 1897 aged 6 months.

Harold Lawton Moore - (my father) - Born: 7th April 1899. - Married Jane Kenworthy Buckley (born 8, Platt Street, Springhead) 21st November 1902. Married at St Chad's Parish Church, Uppermill 1st January 1927 (Jane was living at the 'Waggon & Horses' Inn Uppermill where her father was licensee). Jane died 12th June 1962. and Harold Lawton Moore died 5th Nov 1973.

I (David Moore) was born 19th April 1937, at Holme Bank, Dobcross, Saddleworth and married Marilyn Ann Timperley at St Anne's Church, Lydgate, on 12th August 1961. We have two sons, Andrew Moore, Born: 7th November 1972, and Jonathan Moore, Born 27th February 1971, both married.

I believe that Jane Lawton had only one leg, and used a crutch, which, according to my father, was known as "Home Rule" as she could reach every corner of the living room in Sugar Lane if the children had misbehaved.

I have come across a William Lawton Moore (Jnr) of Tamewater, Dobcross, (Cloth Finisher) who married Alice Schofield of Church Road, Uppermill at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross on the 21st August 1895. His father was William Lawton Moore. (Loom Tuner). Her father was James Schofield, (Cloth Finisher).

There is also a Ralph Lawton Moore mentioned in the 1881 census, age 9 months, born Saddleworth, living with father Frederick Newton (Manager over Warping and Woollen Mill) and mother Ann, described as Housekeeper of Holme Bank, Dobcross New Road. I have not yet established a connection between these
families and mine.

Finally, for now, I have photograph taken in Wellington Studios Blackpool of Abraham, Jane and the family in about 1910, and another one of Jane? and two of the girls standing outside the house in Sugar Lane. If you would like copies I can send you a jpeg file.
