b. Abt 1820 in Dukinfield, Cheshire.

father: Lawton, James (1794 - 1873)
mother: Leigh, Anne (~1797 - <1871)
Son of James Lawton (Farmer) & Anne Leigh 1851 - Aged 30 (Foundry Labourer) at Hallbottom Lane, Newton, Hyde, with widowed Mother-in-Law Phillis (Bayley) Beeley & Family.

EZEKIEL LAWTON of Tintwistle - Born: Dukinfield -Abt.1821

I enjoy the social history aspect of genealogy and so try to keep track of collateral lines. It is on one of these that I have a Lawton connection. Susanna Hulme Beeley, daughter of William Beeley (c. 1873, c. Aug 1833) and Phillis Booth (c. 1796, 19 Aug 1859) was a sister of Thomas Beeley, one of my great-great-grandparents. Susanna was born on 4 August 1821 in Newton, Hyde, and baptized at the Hyde Chapel (Presbyterian) on 5 August 1821. The Beeley family lived in Newton, Hyde. When I checked your database I experienced a Eureka moment when I found a Susannah Beeley entry. Unfortunately, the dates were wrong. She was not my great-great-father's sister.

On 19 February 1843 Susannah Hulme Beeley married Ezekiel Lawton, the son of James Lawton, a farmer. The marriage took place at Tintwistle Chapel (C of E) in Tintwistle. Ezekiel is shown as a bachelor, a farmer by occupation. Both bride and groom list Newton as their abode at time of marriage. The age of each was listed as 21, probably indicating "of full age" as she was 23 and, based on census data, he appears to have been at least a year older. Susannah was listed as Susanna Bailey. As she made her mark on the marriage register, and as this Beeley family shows up as Bailey and Bayley in addition to Beeley, the misspelled surname is not unanticipated.

In the 1851 census Ezikil and Susannah Lawton and their children, John and Ann, are found in the household of Susannah's mother. Phillis Beeley was listed as Philis Bayley, a widowed 54-year old. Another of her daughters, Ann, was also in the household. The census shows the household at Hallbottom Lane, Newton. (HO107/2236, folio 172) Ezikil Lawton is listed as the 30-years old married son-in-law of Phillis. The returns show that he was born in Dukinfield and was an iron foundry labourer by occupation. Susannah is reported as being married and 29 years old, her correct age based on the date of her birth shown on the baptismal record. The returns also show John Lawton, aged 4, and Ann Lawton, aged 3. They are reported as grandchildren of Philis and assumed to be children of Ezekiel and Susanna. John's birthplace is shown as Newton and Ann's as Manchester.

Phillis Beeley died in Newton, Hyde; on 19 August 1859. So far I have been unable to find Ezekiel and Susanna Lawton in subsequent censuses. I checked the indexes of both the 1881 and 1901 censuses without success. However, given the possible misspellings of Ezekiel, he may well be hiding somewhere in one of those censuses.

Hi, Sue McKoy here from Melbourne.

I have found your Ezekiel Lawton and Susanna Beeley. Ezekiel and wife, and I am currently assuming the two children, John and Ann, emigrated to Australia. Haven't found the ship details yet. They had a daughter Louisa, born in 1861 in Castlemaine, Victoria who died 14 months later in 1862. Unfortunately Susannah died in 1867. I haven't found Ezekiel's death yet either. Ezekiel's older brother, Leigh James LAWTON, was a Corporal in the 7th Hussars in India and had married Julia Florence McBride. They had 7 children before emigrating to Australia onboard "Pera" in May 1874. Leigh James LAWTON is my 2nd Great Grandfather, which makes Ezekiel my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.
