- I cannot substantiate the origins of this Rose Whitley, and her association with Lydgate Parish Church. - Her marriage to James Lawton in 1781 records both being residents at Baguley Hill, Quickwood, and in 1782 a child John Lawton was born at Baguley Hill and Baptised on the 6th October 1782 - There is then a period of Seven years before the birth and Baptism of son William Lawton who is recorded as being born at Thorn Lee or Thornley, which is located in the Parish of Lydgate on Under Lane, leading to Grotton, Saddleworth. and Baptised at St. Anne's Parish Church, Lydgate on the 25th January 1789 - Why this is so I can only surmise, for Rose Whitely Lawton was to die at Baguley Hill just 6 years later at the age of 36 and was Buried in St. Anne's Parish Churchyard in 1796 - Which leaves several questions to answered?spouse: Lawton, James (~1757 - )
- Were there any other children botn to James & Rose in the Seven Year period between 1782 and 1789
- What was the association with "Thorn Lee" or "Thonrley" near Grotton, why was second son William born at there, and did Rose perhaps have family or relatives living at Thorn Lee.
- Finding the Gravesite of Rose (Whitely) Lawton in St. Anne's Churchyard records may reveal other members of the Family interred there.Burial - [date: 01 APR 1796] [place: St. Anne's Churchyard, Lydgate, Saddleworth.]

- I am gathering evidence that convinces me that John Whittaker married the Alice Lawton, bap. 20 Sep1789 at Mossley , daughter of Gervas and Alice, and
not the Alice Lawton of Burnthill, bap on 25 Dec1787 as I have believed for the past twelve years, and you have recorded on your website. - Incidentally, John Whittaker was baptised at Mossley on 22 Jun 1783 and born at Grasscroft, but he could have been living inside the Cheshire boundary in 1808 as you suggest.

Notes on JOSHUA WHITAKER (1831-1905)
My Great-great-grandmother Martha "Mattie J." and her brother, Jabez, Jr. Lawton, had an older sister Sarah Lawton, born 12/26/1833, died 11/16/1906; who married in 7/4/1853, JOSHUA WHITAKER/Whittaker. He was BORN 8/20/1831 in Ossett, YORKSHIRE, England and died 12/2/1905 in Media.
Both Sarah and Joshua/Josiah Whitaker, and a number of their children, are buried at the Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, in Rose Valley Wallingford, PA
I have all the other census reports for Joshua/Josiah WHITAKER/Whittaker, 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900. He managed a factory in Nether Providence and was a farmer.
In the 1900 PA Census report, Joshua/Josiah Whitaker stated that he was "NA 1850." He probably emigrated thru the Port of Philadelphia?
We also have located a ROBERT WHITAKER (5/19/1806 -- 12/14/1857), buried in the Old Union Methodist Cemetery.
I have been unable to locate Joshua/Joshiah Whitaker/Whittaker ~19yrs, born in Yorkshire, England; or his probably father, Robert Whitaker/Whittaker ~44yrs, in the 1850 Census Report? Could you please check the 1850 census report on ancestry?
Although Robert & Grace Whitaker and Family have been located in the 1841 UK Census at Ossett, Nr. Dewsbury, Yorkshire, JOSHUA WHITAKER is not living with the family at that time, and as yet hasn't been located anywhere else in the 1841 UK Census. I believe that by the time the British Census Enumeration was done in 1851, Grace Whitaker may well have been deceased and Widower Robert Whitaker and children migrated to the USA, so it may well be that both men might have fallen into the space, between the 1850 US and 1851 British Census
Trevor, Is there anyway, you could check an earlier British Census Report for:
1. Josiah/Joshua Whitaker, born September 20, 1831 in Yorkshire, England? He became a NA citizen of the United States in 1850 per the 1900 PA Census Report.
2. Robert Whitaker, born May 19, 1806? Maybe the father of the above?JOSHUA WHITAKER Born: 1831 is not to be found in the 1841 Census at Ossett, Dewsbury with parents Robert & Grace Whitaker.

- In the original Register of 1713 which is in a very bad state - the actual record reads: Jo (sic) Lawton & Martha Winterbotham - 6th October 1713. - Perhaps the Curate (Scribe) entered a shortened version of John to save space on the page for inscribing ' Martha Winterbotham' - It would seem logical that Jo: could be short for JOHN and not Jonathan

I think I may have the wrong John Lawton here married to Ann (Nancy) Hill, As I suspect this is the John Lawton who married Nancy Hill at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church in 1788....his birth year is recorded as 1757 in the IGI, but of course this could be a transcription error. This John Lawton was buried at Saddleworth Churchyard, so it's quite likely he was from Saddleworth and not Mottram Parish.spouse: Hill, Ann (Nanny) ? (~1772 - )
