Notes on AMELIA LAWTON - (1798 - 1868)spouse: Hulley, William (~1800 - 1845)
This could well be the daughter of Thomas & Betty Lawton of Quick. It is looking very likely that Amelia (Milly) Lawton gave birth to Two illegitimate children i.e. Samuel Lawton in 1825 and Violeta (Violet) Lawton in 1827 - Violeta was Baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross on 18th March 1827 which is not consistent with Baptism Records of 26th September 1827. - In the Baptism Records at Holy Trinity Church in Dobcross, Violet Lawton who was baptised on the 26th September 1827 is recorded as the illigitmate daughter of Amelia Lawton (Spinster) of Quick, Saddleworth. As for Samuel Lawton, I have been unable to trace any records of his Birth or Baptism at the present time.
I have not been able to substantiate that Amelia Lawton ever married before William Hulley, and although on the Marriage Certificate of Samuel Lawton to Jane Moss on 28th July 1844 it states Samuel's Father as being a Thomas Lawton, I can only surmise that this may be a reference to his Grandfather Thomas Lawton.
There is a record of a Marriage at St. Mary's Church, Oldham-above-Town - The marriage of Milly Lawton to William Hulley at St. Mary's Church on the 7th March 1842. The Groom is entered as Single and the brides marital status is also entered as Single, Which does not support the theory of a previous Marriage. - The Death of William Hulley is recorded in the Apr_Jun quarter of 1845 at Ashton-under-Lyne. So the marriage only lasted a short two years, and by the 1851 Census, Amelia (Lawton) Hulley was a Widow.

The Reporter - 5th April 1930 - Baby in drawer - Mother's amazing discovery - parcel covered with postcards.spouse: Ashworth, David (*1906 - )
Seeing a brown papers parcel almost covered by postcards in a drawer, Mrs Clara LAWTON, of Huddersfield Road, Scouthead, discovered on unwrapping the bundle the body of a male child.
The above story was further unfolded at Uppermill on Thursday before the Coroner Mr E. W. NORRIS.
Mrs LAWTON, wife of Mr George Shaw LAWTON said that on the Friday afternoon she had occasion to go into the drawer of a dresser in a room which had been occupied by her 19 year old daughter, Amy, when she saw a brown paper parcel almost covered with postcards. Out of curiosity she undid one end of it and the saw the head of a child. She gave information to the police.
Her daughter she said ceased work on February 28th because she had downed her warp. She appeared to be all right but pale. All the family had suffered from influenza, and had occupied a single bed in the front room in turn.
Amy, continued witness, went into the room on Sunday, March 2, as influenza seemed to be coming on. She occupied the room for a few days, and then went back to her ordinary sleeping place. On finding the body she questioned Amy, and elicited the baby was born between ten and half past on March 2, and she fixed the time because the church bells were ringing. Witness had seen no signs of the birth, but she suspected her daughter's condition in December last, but could not get her to say anything.
Dr OLIVER said he made a post mortem examination on Wednesday, and the appearances were such that he was satisfied that there had been a separate existence. In his opinion death was due to suffocation and manual strangulation coupled with bleeding from the cord. The inquest was adjourned until Tuesday next.

The Reporter - 12th April 1930 - Baby in drawer - Mother's amazing discovery - Scouthead girl's ordeal.
Rummaging in her daughter's drawer amongst some postcards, Mrs Clara LAWTON, of Huddersfield Road, Scouthead, discovered a brown paper parcel. She opened one end and saw the head of a dead baby.
The sequel was heard at the adjourned inquest on Tuesday at Uppermill, when the daughter, Amy LAWTON, aged 19, a woollen weaver, told how the baby was born, and how she had refused an offer of marriage from the father of the child, Donald ASHWORTH, with whom she had kept company.
Born on Sunday. - The girl's story was that the baby was born on Sunday, March 2nd, shortly after 10 o'clock, just as the church bells were ringing. After the birth she lost consciousness, and when she came round she saw the baby on the floor. When she felt strong enough she got up, put it on the bed, and later looked at it. She saw it was dead. She wrapped the body in a parcel and put it into a drawer, being afraid.
She had been keeping company with David ASHWORTH, and had many times been urged to marry. She had refused because she did not wish to leave her father and mother. When she would not marry ASHWORTH advised her to tell her mother of her condition, but she refrained as she felt her mother would urge her to marry.
Witness was most emphatic that she did nothing to the child in the way of squeezing the neck, and never held a hand over its mouth to prevent crying.
Doctor's evidence. - Dr. J. G. OLIVER, who told the Coroner (Mr E. W. NORRIS) at the opening of the inquest, that he was satisfied that there had been a separate existence, and that death was partly due to suffocation and manual strangulation coupled with bleeding from neglect. Dr OLIVER, questioned by Mr NICHOLSON, solicitor, representing the LAWTON family, replied on Tuesday that the girl Amy, would have had no experience in such matters and in such cases it was easy for something to happen to a child. If she said she did not know what she was doing that would probably describe her position at the time. A fall from bed could have caused the bruises; the signs indicated pressure not a blow. In his opinion there had been manual interference more than neglect. A heavy pile carpet could have caused the suffocation.
Visit to police. - Inspector KAY said on April 1 at 8 p.m. Amy LAWTON visited the police station at Uppermill along with a man, David ASHWORTH, who made a statement in consequence of which he went to Scouthead. He received the child from Mrs LAWTON, Amy being present at the time. He took the body to the Uppermill mortuary. - The coroner: Have you no mortuary at Springhead?. - Witness; No, I had to get permission to bring the body here.
Addressing the jury, the coroner said the points for them to consider were: Was the child born dead, and then, if born alive, had there been criminal negligence intended to do grievous bodily harm. In that case it would under the new act be infanticide, though not murder. The coroner pointed out that by her foolishness in refusing to marry, the girl has caused great trouble to all.
The jury returned a verdict that the child was born alive that there had been neglect at birth, but that death was accidental.
*******************
Amy seems to be the child of George Shaw and Clara (nee WILD) LAWTON.
George Shaw LAWTON is age 27 on the 1901 census and born Saddleworth.
George Shaw LAWTON married Clara WILD, I don't think she is one of mine, but is born Oldham.
George Shaw LAWTON looks to be the son of Samuel and Mary (nee MOSS) LAWTON and was born in 1873 at Saddleworth.

GOLDEN WEDDING of Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Lawton
57 YEARS WITH ONE FIRM
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Lawton of Oldham, celebrated their Golden Wedding to-day (Saturday). They were married at Rycroft Congregational Chapel, Ashton, on August 30th 1869. Mr. Lawton was born at New Hollins, Micklehurst in 1843, and went to work as a Piecer at Nine Years of age in the mill at Mossley Bottoms, then owned by Mr. Samuel Shaw.
In 1862 he left the mill, and, through the influence of Mr. Jno Lawton, of Messers, George Lawton & Sons, of Micklehurst, he entered the Drawing Office of Messers. Platt & Company of Oldham, where he is now employed in the highest position attainable in that department, thus having been with the firm over 57 years.
Mr. Lawton has had the unique experience in connection with Cotton Spinning and it's machinery extending over 66 years, the first nine of hhich he was employed as a mill operative and the remainder in connection with the designing and laying out of cotton mill machinery for home and abroad wherever cotton spinning is carried on, in which connection we may say that he had the laying out of the first mill erected in (Kagoshima) in Japan in 1866.
Mr. Lawton might be said to represent a connecting link between the primitive methods of more than two generations ago and those of to-day, and it goes without saying that he possesses a fund of reminiscences greatly interesting and valuable to students of the evolution in cotton and woollen carding and spinning. We might instance the small, primitive carding engine with its seperate wood stationary flats and plunger for the sliver cans as compared with the later revolving iron self-stipping flat carding engine; as also the old hand mule of about 30 dozen spindles, single and double deckers, compared with the modern self-acting mule of 1000 spindles and upwards. Changes equally great have taken place in the carding of wool, in his day the carding machine delivered the wool in single slivers of about 30 inches long, to be pieced up to the Billey by hand, whilst to-day the carding engine, with it's condensor, delivers up to 240 slivers or threads in continuous lenghts on 6 bobbins of 40 threads each or 12 bobbins of 20 threads each, which are taken direct to the self-acting spinning mule, to be spun into finished counts or skeins required.
Mrs. Lawton has also played her part in the textile world, having commenced work as a creeler for hand warping at the early age of eight years, at Messers. George Lawton's Woollen Mill, where her father, Mr. Giles Winterbottom, was manager for upwards of fifty years, and was succeeded by her nephew, Mr. Watts Winterbottom.Occupation -
