- JOSEPH BUCKLEY - Son of James & Hannah Buckley of Loadhill,spouse: Winterbottom, Alice (1782 - 1867)
- THE SADDLEWORTH CASUALTIES OF PETERLOO
- PETERLOO MASSACRE - Aged 44, Joseph Buckley was one of the oldest of the Saddleworth casualties. He was baptised at St Chad?s on 20th August 1774, the son of James Buckley, of Loadhill, clothier, and Hannah, his wife. He married Alice Winterbottom in 1804 at Saddleworth and from then until 1819 they had five children, the two youngest, twins, and just one year old at the time of Peterloo. The family were living at Lydgate for most of this time and it was here that most of the children were baptised; the exception being the first child who was baptised at Greenacres Chapel. A further child was born in 1823 and by this time they had moved to Woodbrook.
Hunt?s List records that J. Buckley of Woodbrook, Saddleworth was sabred on the shoulder by a man who rode a skewbald horse. The MCC Report and Manchester Observer provided more details. Joseph Buckley, of Woodbrook, Saddleworth, aged 44, and a weaver with 4 children, received a sabre-cut on the shoulder by a trumpeter and was knocked down and trampled on; his left leg hurt seriously. He was disabled for two weeks and received ?1 in relief.
One anomaly between this account and the church register records is the description of him as a weaver; in all the church registers he is recorded simply as a labourer. He died in 1828 and was buried at Lydgate. According to the registers he was then in his 50th year, making him four years younger than the age stated in the Peterloo Lists. As the Peterloo age agrees with his baptismal date it would seem it is the church records that are in error.
Joseph?s wife Alice was left to bring up their teenage children. In 1839, she re-married at Oldham to John Lawton and they settled at Walkers. He was then described as a labourer but in the 1841 census as a cotton spinner. A decade later he was described as a beer seller and licens-ing records indicate he was then keeping the Dog and Pheasant at Walkers view. The couple were still running the pub in 1861, Alice, then aged 78, listed as blind in the census.6

Death Note
- Mossley & Saddleworth Reporter - 18th July 1908
- Tragic Accident at Castleshaw
An enquiry into the Death of Mrs. Mary Alice Lawton was held at the Oddfellows Hall, Uppermill on Friday morning, before Mr.E.H.Hill, Mr. H.Pearson was elected foreman of the Jury.
The evidence given by Mr. Henry Ingham Lawton, Woollen Manufacturer, of 'Wellfield' Uppermill, was that his Wife left home about 2.0.p.m. on Saturday, July 4th, in company withother ladies to attend a Picnic at Castleshaw, Delph. She was brought home in a Cab about seven-o-clock in the evening of that day with her ankle broken. Doctor Pice attended her up to her death. She had always enjoyed good health.
Dr. Price, the next witness examined, said he was called to see the deceased about 8.0.p.m. on July 4th, and found her suffering from a fracture to the foot, just above the ankle. There was no shock. Mrs. Lawton was rather a nervous subject. Her general condition was good. He was called about 8.0.pm. on Wednesday last, and found life extinct.
Jane Redman, of Lee Street, Uppermill, deposed that on July 4th, a party of ladies, including the deceased, went to Castleshaw. At Springhouse, eight of them got upon a See-Saw, the deceased being next to witness. They had only been on about two minutes, when one end of the plank suddenly went up; there was a sceam, and by it her attention was attracted to the sight of a number of ladied on the ground in a heap. The deceased tried to assist her off the plank, then gave a sceam, and siad her foot was broken. She was assisted to a seat, and Mrs Kelsey, the hostess, bandaged her foot. A Cab was sent for, and she was conveyed home. The deceased afterwards told witness that her foot was twisted underneath her.
The Jury returned a verdict that Death was due to collapse following upon the accident. - Mrs. Mary Alice Lawton was aged 46 years.

Is this Susannah Lawton the person in the news article below???spouse: Lawton, Robert (~1790 - )
Manchester Guardian - Saturday, 15th December 1827 - Robberies, etc.,
Daring burglary - On Thursday morning week, about three o'clock, Susannah LAWTON, daughter of Robert BUCKLEY, of Moseley, who lived in her father's house, was awoken by a noise in her bed room, and saw a man there, who, on finding that she was awake, made his way out of the room. She immediately got up and alarmed the family. when it was found that the house had been entered by taking out a part of a lower window, and a variety of wearing apparel was gone; a large bundle was also placed near the window, ready to be conveyed away. The thieves had made their escape. Information was given to the police in Manchester, and, on Saturday, KILBIE ascertained that a shirt, part of the property stolen, had been pawned by a woman named Alice LEE, who, on being taken into custody, said she had had it from Mary WROE. This woman, on being apprehended, acknowledged that she had employed Alice LEE to pawn it, and that she herself had received it from a man called Mossley Jack. A pair of stockings KILBIE ascertained had also been pawned by a woman named Mary AIKIN, who also, on being charged with it, said they had been given to her by Mossley Jack. This man, whose name is John HULLEY, KILBIE apprehended, and on his legs found a pair of stockings, also part of the stolen property. They were brought up at the New Bailey on Monday, when HULLEY, WROE, and AIKIN were committed to the sessions: Betty HILL was discharged, and admitted as a witness against WROE. Another woman who had been apprehended on suspicion of being concerned in the above burglary, had no less than 100 pawn tickets upon her. Two of the articles pawned, turned out to have been stolen from a house at Stayley, and from several circumstances, Mossley Jack supposed to have been the thief. She was committed to the sessions.

I have now found that this family do connect to my extended family of RADCLIFFE and WHITEHEAD's.
The following details are courtesy of Leonard Kidd, and link to the memorial inscription above.
Leonard has various items left by his late brother-in-law Philip Wood who died in January this year. One item of great interest is a small book entitled The Illustrated Scripture Text Book (published in 1872), which has an interleaved diary for memoranda. This has been used to record the births, marriages and deaths of relatives and others. He suspect that most of the entries were made by Frances Amelia Platt (1846 - 1919) who married Joseph Wood (1841 - 1920) in 1878 at Ebenezer Church, Uppermill. As we know Joseph Wood's mother Hannah, married Henry Whitehead in 1847.
Noted on one page an entry Emily Whitehead married but it gave no year or other information regarding Emily. From my own records it appeared that Emily was born c. 1855, the daughter of Joel Whitehead (who is mentioned elsewhere in the book) and his wife Alice Radcliffe who married at Rochdale in 1848. Joel Whitehead (1819 - 1897) was the son of Ralph Whitehead (1779 - 1852) and his wife Hannah Lawton (d. 1819). Ralph was the son of James Whitehead (1753 - 1828) and his wife Joanna Wrigley (1752 - 1819), and James was the son of Thomas Whitehead and Mary Harling who married at St. Chad, Saddleworth on 3rd January 1744/5.
Alice Radcliffe (1823 - 1892) who married Joel Whitehead, was the daughter of Joseph Radcliffe (1790 - 1843) and his wife Hannah Heathcote (c. 1792 - 1830) who married at Mottram in 1820. Joseph was the son of Samuel Radcliffe (1763 - 1831) and his wife Alice Wrigley (c. 1766 - 1840). Samuel was the son of Samuel Radcliffe (born c. Jan. 1721/22) and his wife Anna Wrigley. The latter Samuel was the son of Samuel Radcliffe and Ann Woolley who married 7 Dec. 1713 at St. Chad, Saddleworth.
From a search of LancashireBMD I found the marriage of Emily Whitehead to John W. Whitehead in 1881 (Reg. Saddleworth RM/5/65). John William Whitehead (1858 - 1923) was the son of William Whitehead (1830-1891) and Elizabeth Burgess (1829-1908).
When William WHITEHEAD married Elizabeth BURGESS on the 20th April 1853 at St Chad's Church, Rochdale, he was 22 years old, a bachelor, a painter, he lived at Saddleworth and his father John WHITEHEAD was a plasterer. Elizabeth BURGESS was 24 years old, a spinster, she lived at Saddleworth and there was no father listed. By banns. William signed, Elizabeth with a X. Witnesses were Joseph BRIERLEY and Lydia PLATT.
William Whitehead was the son of John Whitehead (bc1805) and his wife Mary Wood (b 1805).
*******
Martha Ann WHITEHEAD, the sister of Emily WHITEHEAD mentioned above, was married to Thomas Lees BUCKLEY (SRO 1877) and their children were Stephen Rupert, Lilian and Doris.

- Sirocco Engineering Company. Looking in the newspaper archives and online - Wikipedia has a good article - it was certainly a very important employer in Belfast and its founder Sir Samuel Cleland Davidson was highly respected for his inventions. The company made air conditioning for cinemas and powerful ventilation systems which were used in the coal mines of Yorkshire and the North Midlands, including the Grimethorpe Colliery where, intriguingly, there was a Mr Burrows who was the engineer.
- Back to Jack's family history. I traced a few more things in Maryhill and it looks like the Burrows family came over to Scotland during the 1860s. I also found out more about the family of Maud's mother, Florence Woodward, but her father George Griffiths still remains a mystery as there's nothing to distinguish him from dozens of similarly named men.Occupation -
Foreman Iron Moulder (Master)Residence - [date: 1906] [place: No.68 Rushton Road, Bradford, West Yorks:]
I have not been able to trace Jack's grandfather, Steven Daniel Burrows either in Northern Ireland or in Great Britain. He appears to have been still alive on 4 June 1906 when John Burrows and Maud Griffiths were married. The parish register of Holy Trinity Church, Derby records his name as Stephen Burrows, an iron moulder. Nor have I yet been able to find out when John came to England. He gave an address of 68 Rushton Road, Bradford in 1906 and daughter Margaret was apparently born at Lapage Street, Bradford the following year but I have found nothing so far to link either of those addresses with the family name Burrows.Residence - [date: 1922] [place: No.7 Osborne Grove, Rhyl, St. Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales]

Emigration - [date: 29 AUG 1922] [place: Fremantle, Aboard the Ship "Moreton Bay"]
I found the passenger list confirming that John Burrows senior sailed to Freemantle aboard the Moreton Bay, departing London on 29 August 1922. Interestingly, he gave his address as 7 Osborne Grove, Rhyl. I mistyped John Junior's birth year as 1921 when it should have been, of course, 1920. The birth was registered in St. Asaph registration district in the first quarter of the year. I have checked that the district did include Rhyl so wonder whether that was where John was born.Census - [date: 1891] [place: No.44 Main Street, Maryhill, Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland]

Thank you for the snippet about the Sirocco Engineering Company.
Yes, after I had written a few days ago, I also started to trace the Burrows family in Northern Ireland and in Scotland, starting with the Ireland 1911 Census and working backwards. I have found them in the 1901 Ireland Census and the 1891 and 1871 Scotland Censuses too. I think they were in Ireland in 1881 and also in 1861 but there are no available censuses for those years to confirm it. I believe the 1861 census entry you found in Caltin in east-central Glasgow is for another Burrows family.
Jack's grandfather Stephen Burrows was born about 1852-54 (dates vary) in County Down, the son of Stephen Burrows Senior and his wife Mary Jane Teuton. Perhaps the name Daniel was added later to distinguish him from his father. Stephen Jnr. was a bachelor when he married Margaret Greenlaw on New Year's Eve 1875 in Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Margaret was born in Glasgow also in 1852-54, the daughter of William Greenlaw and his wife Mary (her surname begins with B but is very difficult to read). Stephen and Margaret had five children who survived to adulthood and no doubt from the gaps in their ages several more who didn't.
*Stephen [Daniel] Burrows Jnr. b 1852-4 Co. Down
Margaret Greenlaw b 1852-4 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
m 31 Dec 1875 Maryhill, Lanarkshire

4 Montgomery Greenlaw 2nd b 21 Apr 1889 Maryhill, Lanarkshire
5 Mary Ann [Greenlaw] b 16 Mar 1891 Maryhill, Lanarkshire
There are quite a few Burrows families in Maryhill at this time and the BMD records on the Scotland's People website lists the births and infant deaths of two further Henry Teuton Burrows, one who died in 1888 aged 0 and another who died in 1891 aged 6. There was also an earlier Montgomery Greenlaw Burrows who was born on 22 September 1886 in Maryhill and who died there in 1888 aged 2. Unfortunately the website charges for each query and I have limited myself at the moment to the marriage and the births of the two younger children we are sure about and also the first Montgomery Greenlaw Burrows who does indeed prove to be another son of Stephen and Margaret.
In 1881 the family would probably have been in Ireland (Henry Teuton was born there that year) but there were other Burrows families in Maryhill, all with similar forenames and some of them iron moulders. The family heads, James (b 1819), Stephen (b 1822), Henry (b 1840) and John Burrows (b 1849) were all born in Ireland. Maryhill is now on the outskirts of north west Glasgow. The addresses we already recognise are: 45 Whitelaw Street (1871- 1876), 392 Gairbraid Street (1886) and 44 Main Street (1889-1891). In 1881, 44 Main Street was occupied by the family of Henry Burrows who may have been another son of Stephen Burrows Snr. 41 Whitelaw Street was occupied by the family of James Burrows, perhaps Stephen's brother. Certainly, some things to work on but for now, we know:
Stephen Burrows Snr b 1812 Ireland general labourer
Mary Jane Teuton
Children:
1 Mary Ann b 1844 Ireland
m William Beresford b 1841 Ireland general labourer
Children:
1 Mary Jane b 1863 Maryhill
2 William b 1871 Maryhill
2 John b 1849 Ireland ironstone miner
Children:
1 Mary b 1868 Maryhill

Greenfield Golden Wedding.
Mr and Mrs Albert LAWTON's celebrations.
Mr and Mrs Albert LAWTON of 6, Wellington Terrace, Greenfield, celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday, when they entertained a good number of relatives and friends. They were the recipients of many gifts and a host of beautiful flowers.
Mr and Mrs LAWTON were married at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, by the vicar, Rev. H. P. EDWARDS, on July 23rd 1888. Both have enjoyed good health, but unfortunately, Mrs LAWTON had a bad fall a short time ago, which injured her leg, and has prevented her following her usual activities.
Mr. LAWTON was born at Roaches, Mossley, but came to live at Boarshurst, Greenfield, when he was two years of age, and attended old Boarshurst School and the Sunday school.
Commencing work in the warehouse at Wellington Mills, Greenfield, as a half-timer Mr LAWTON later became a spinner, and was employed there for 57 years - the whole of his working life.
He retired 12 months before the mills closed down following the death of Captain G. A. SCHOFIELD, J.P..
A staunch conservative, Mr LAWTON became a member of the new conservative club at Greenfield in 1895, and for 16 years served on the committee of management.
Mrs Ann LAWTON, who was the eldest daughter of the late Mr John BYROM, was born at Grosvenor Square, Uppermill, but later went to live with her parents at Mow Walls Farm, Dobcross, where she helped in the farmhouse until she was married.
During the war she enrolled in the V.A.D. and served as cook for three days a week from 1914 to 1915 at Oak Dene and Ashway Gap military hospitals. At the end of the war she was presented with the British Red Cross certificate by the order of St John of Jerusalem in England for her valuable services. She was also presented with medals.
"I liked the work and was always willing to help so long as I could" Mrs LAWTON told the "Reporter".
For many years she, too, was an active worker for Greenfield Conservative Club and served on the women's committee, and was a member of the Primrose League.
Mr and Mrs LAWTON have no family, but have been very closely associated with their nephews and nieces, most of whom were present at the happy celebrations on Sunday
