b. Abt 1831 in Millbrook, Stayley, Cheshire, England.
d. 29 SEP 1872 in Sidney, Delaware County, New York

father: Bottoms, Hugh Lawton of (1783 - 1873)
mother: Shaw, Martha (1792 - 1836)
9. FRANK3 LAWTON (HUGH2, JAMES1) was born Abt. 1831 in England, and died 1874 in Delaware Co., New York, Sidney. He married CORNELIA Abt. 1860. She was born Abt. 1833 in New York.

Notes for FRANK LAWTON:
I had tried for a long, long time to find Frank Lawton, brother of our gggrandfather James B. Lawton, who was 19 in the 1850 census. I finally figured he'd probably died, but today up popped a possible 1860 census hit in Masonville, Delaware Co., NY... Frank Lawton age 29, born England, and wife Cornelia age 28, born NY. He was farming. Also, of course when and where Hugh Sr. died and was buried had eluded us as well... he just vanished after the 1860 census in Litchfield Co., CT until...

The 1860 Census for Delaware Co., New York, Masonville, Pg. 662:
1220, 1200
Frank Lawton, 29, Farmer, Pers.750, Eng.
Cornelia, 28, NY
(Next door is Henry and Lovina Silvernail (he may be Cornelia's brother) and their 3 children.)

When I checked the 1870 census, they had moved to Sidney, still in the same county.

1870 Census for Delaware Co., New York, Sidney, P.O. Franklin, Pg. 424A & B:
221, 232
Lawton, Frank, 38, M, W, Farmer, 3000, 2000, England, Parents of foreign birth
Cornelia, 38, F, W, Keeping House, NY
George, 9, M, W, NY
Mary, 6, F, W, NY
Martha, 6, F, W, NY
Lawton, Hugh, 84, M, W, England, Parents of foreign birth.

When I researched on the Del. Co. site I found a probate index entry for Frank, who died in 1874 and a will entry for Hugh dated in 1874. I sat right down and have got a request and SASE ready to mail to the court clerk's office tomorrow for copies of everything. Perhaps that's why we've had no luck finding a death date or burial place for Hugh Sr. When Maggie was in CT summer before last she looked all over. She found Hugh Jr., Chapman's and Kenworthy's, but no Hugh Sr. If the above is our Hugh, as I think it may be, another little mystery may be solved. I didn't find listings in any of the web site's cemetery records, however.

Diglea, Martha Brearley of (~1715 - b1790) - female
b. Abt 1715 in Diglea, Diggle, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
bur. 19 JAN 1790
On the 31st May 1724 a man names James Brierley (Clothier) married MARTHA BRADBURY a spinster of Diglea (Saddleworth parish registers. P.20). They had a daughter, Sarah baptised on 27ty September 1724, who died and was buried later the same year on 16th December 1724 (P.129). The couple then had a boy, James baptised on 10th July 1726 (P.137) who was also to die early in life, being buried on the 29th December 1726 (P.355). On the 26th November 1727 they had another son, whom they again christened James, but he was buried some nine years later on 21st September 1736 (P.376)

JAMES BRIERLEY, Martha's husband, had been buried on 23rd June 1730 (P.363) and the following day their son Joseph was baptised on 24th June 1730 to 'Martha Brearley' widow of the late James Brearley de Dig-Lee' (P.155). This sad story continued with the burial of their last child Joseph on 27th October 1732.

MARTHA BREARLEY re-married on 31st December 1734 to RICHARD LAWTON (Clothier) of Thurstones, Diggle (P.33) and they had a son named John who was baptised on 2nd November 1735 (P.184). This was also to end in tragedy when he was buried on 15th August the following year (P.376), and having seen none of her children grow to maturity, Martha has actually lost two of her son's within five weeks of each other.

The story does not end there, however, because she and Richard produced yet another child, a daughter named Alice, baptised on 1st January 1749 (P.276). Unbelievably she passed away the same year and was buried on 31st October 1749 (P.408). Although Martha had given birth to six children by two different husbands, none of them survived beyond the age of 9 years.

An entry in the Parish Records records the burial of Richard Lawton of Shelderslow (Clothier) on the 12th October 1769. (P.397) A later entry on Page 461 refers to the burial of a Martha Lawton on 10th January 1790. This is the only entry between 1749 and 1800 for the death of a Martha Lawton, who could possibly have been the wife of Richard Lawton, but appears very unlikely as her husbands name is given as George Lawton.

b. Abt 1660 in Dobcross, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
d. 28 MAY 1727 in Dobcross, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

father: Milne, George Lawton of Walker (~1620 - ~1686)
mother: Lawton, Mary ? (~1620 - >1686)
- NOTES: on Josiah Lawton. - ( 1660 - 1727)

- Leased land at Dobcross and Dungebooth from the Trustees of Meltham Chapel

- A tradgic series of events beset this family in the years 1725 to 1728 - In 1725 - Sarah, the wife of son John Lawton, appears to have died from Childbirth complication after giving birth to her second son BENJAMIN, Sarah died on the 1st April 1725 the same day that her son Benjamin Lawton was Baptised. - Then in 1727, both Josiah Lawton and his wife Mary (Maria) apparently died on the same day or with a day of each other - Both Josiah and Maria being buried on the 31st May 1727, but apparently not in the same grave it seems. Almost a year later, Josiah's heir, son John Lawton died at the same place on the 27th March 1728 aged 27 years, leaving orphaned infant children JOSEPH, MARY and BENJAMIN,

(Old Josiah) This is likely to be 'Josias' named in the Will of George Lawton of Walker Milne (Walk Mill), Dobcross, who died in 1686 (Joint Executor) - Josiah who was still at home in 1686, married with two children, so it seem almost certain that he married in 1683 as IGI records state.

This is the 'Josiah' recorded as Born: 1668 in the IGI Records (Date should really be 1660) as he was in his 67th year when he died in 1727)

A Woollen Clothier of Dobcross. Will dated 24th May, 1727, proved 20th July, 1727. Josiah Lawton was born c.1660. Married Mary Scholefield on 10th May, 1683 at St. Chad, Saddlworth. Josiah died 28th May, 1727 (67th year) and Mary his wife died 29th May, 1727 (stated to be 67th year), both buried St. Chad on 31st May, 1727. Mary was the daughter of Hugh Scholefield and was baptised August 1662 at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church.
