- Cannot locate this George & (Joyce) ?? Lawton in the 1861 Census - Father Robert Lawton has moved in with Niece - HANNAH (Lawton) Wilkinson & Family at No.15 Oxford Street, Stalybridge. - Having checked ONS records of BDM for reference to George, Joyce, James & Martin without success - I considered the Family may have emigrated to America, along with many others about that time, but I cannot find any record as yet to substantiate that fact. - George, Joyce and family seemed to have dissapeared between 1851 and 1861 - (More research required)

The Hesslegrave family and the Lawton family joined when Joseph married first Elizabeth then, after her death, Mary Lawton, daughters of Joseph Lawton of Bank and Hannah Heywood. They owned land in Dobcross and had a good bank balance so it seems. Joseph Lawton built a house he called Manor House on Wood Lane in Dobcross, and when he died in 1820 he bequeathed the house to Joseph Hesslegrave and his wife Mary. Joseph had a sister who lived with them and she created a school for children of the village. Their daughter Elizabeth (1827-?) also taught there until at least 1861. Joseph Hesslegrave lived there for about forty years until he died in 1864. Thereon the house was let to a Sarah Ann Gill. In 1875 the executors of Joseph's 1864 will sold the house to a Joseph Woodcock, a cloth designer of Dobcross.

They came to the US around 1903 and had 6 more children. My mother Kathleen Johnson was born in Baltic, Connecticut in 1904. The family moved to Plainfield, Connecticut around 1919. (Courtesy of "Holly Leech" <jimholly@gte.net> )

1838 reported father, John's, death. Living at Far Lane, Stalybridge.

Eli Hitchen married Lavinia Wilson Bardsley, a widow with children on Feb. 13, 1866. They had one son, Eli Hitchen, born June 7, 1867.

1871 UK Census, age 54, living Sand St., Dukinfield, lodger, with daughter and son-in-law, John and Asenath Lester, but previous page has children at 8 Lowe's Yard, Dukinfield. I think the census taker went too far with his ditto marks. I think the address should be Sand St. Wife and son living at 2 George St., Stalybridge.

Eli Hitchen (born June 14, 1816) died May 9, 1878 at No.2 George St., Stalybridge. - Hannah Lawton Hitchen died April 14, 1864.

By the way you have Hannah Lawton listed twice (with the same parents). Both born 1816. One has the death year, and marriage information, the other doesn't. There apparently was another Hannah Lawton (same parents) that you have listed who was born 1808.

Radcliffe Baptism Register of St. Chad's - Book: 2 - Page: 198 - 9th May 1767 - JAMES, Son of Ralph Holden, Mason, and Jane, his wife of Delph Slack.

Holden, James (~1769 - ) - male
b. Abt 1769 in Summer Hill, New Tame, Denshaw.

father: Barn, John Holden of Delph (~1748 - )
mother: Broadbent, Sarah (~1750 - 1772)
- I am trying to trace the family of Betsey Holden who married John Brierley(or Brearley as he was named in the marriage register) in Rochdale on 7-11-1827 - Based on the fact that 2 of her children are with James (aged 75) of Brownhill naze in the 1841 census, it seems that he is her father. - It seems likely that James was born in 1769 to John Holden of Summerhill (eldest son of 'sojourner' mason , Ralph Holden and his wife Jane of Delph Slack -both the latter died at Brownhill Naze in 1788 and 1798 respectively) and John's wife Sarah Broadbent who died in 1772.

James Holden married Susan Whitehead in Rochdale when both lived at Ogden in 1792 and their first son John baptised in Milnrow. Other children seem to have been baptised at Ogden baptist chapel around the turn of the 18th century but I cannot find trace of a baptism for Betty. - Precise ages for Betty and husband John are not made any easier by the fluctuations ion their reported ages in successive censuses.... John being 33, 45, 60,69 then 75 and Betty being 34,42,58,63 !! so somewhere between 1804 and 1807 for each ??? - There do seem to be Brearley families also in Brownhill Naze around the turn of the 18th century so it seems plausible John belongs to one of them but with so many Brierley/ Brearley families in the area it is difficult to confirm

Benjamin Holden b. 1709 m. Ann Broadbent b. 1713 married 25 Apr 1734, at St Chad, Saddleworth.

Trevor,

I have been working on some of my G.G. Grandfather's siblings lines and came across this new connection to a Lawton line. It goes like this:

Joseph Holden & Helen Lawton
Son: John & Ann Shaw
Son: John & Hannah Broadbent
Son: Martin & 3rd wife Hannah Bradbury
Daughter: Mary Ann & John Holden (possibly a cousin?)
Daughter: Sarah & Hugh Wood
Daughter: Harriet Ann & John Sykes (who may have been a cousin)
Son: Jack Sykes married Doris Lawton 6 May 1933. She was the daughter of R. W. Lawton of Uppermill. Doris had a sister Alice that was her maid of honor.
The wedding was written up in "The Reporter" on Saturday 13 May, 1933.
Are any of these Lawtons in your lines?

The way these lines cross it is even possible that Doris and Jack were cousins if she were a descendant of one of Helen Lawton's brothers.
