- Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, 13th June 1908 - Interesting wedding at Saddleworth.
A good deal of pleasant interest was manifested on Whit Tuesday afternoon in the marriage of Mr Wilfred LAWTON, second son of Mr David LAWTON, of Spring Grove, and Miss Martha HUDSON, eldest daughter of the late Mr John HUDSON. The ceremony took place in the Wesleyan Church, Greenfield. The bridesmaid was Miss Lucy AKED and the best man was Mr J. KENWORTHY. The Rev. G. W. TYSON, of Delph, performed the ceremony, and Mr Herbert PEARSON discoursed some pleasing organ music before the nuptials and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" as the party left the chapel. The reception was held in the schoolroom, the bride being one of the teachers and the bridegroom one of the school secretaries. In the evening a merry party assembled in the large upper school to do honour to the occasion. After the wedding repast the young couple went to Southport for their wedding trip, and on their return they are settling at Boarshurst with the hearty good wishes of a large circle of friends. They have been gratified recipients of many valuable and useful tokens of the esteem of a wide circle of friends

- This BENJAMIN LAWTON of Dobcross, had a pretty bad start to life, as he was Baptised on the 1st April 1725 - The same day that his Mother Sarah Lawton died from suspected childbirth complications. It must have been very difficult for his father JOHN LAWTON to not only cope with losing his wife Sarah, but having to find a 'Wet Nurse' to nourish and sustain Benjamin as a new born, (there was no Infant Milk Formula in those days) -spouse: Swainscroft, Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley of (1728 - r0940)
- Benjamin Lawton named his first born children after his Parents - JOHN & SARAH.
Benjamin Lawton is recorded as a Clothier up until 1764, after which he is shown as Innkeeper and Licenced Victualler of Swan Inn, Woods Lane, Dobcross from 1755-1796 (Will of Benjamin Lawton of Dobcross, innkeeper 1797)
The records for 1773 note that a James Lawton of The Blue Bell Inn at Delph, was 'infirm', so he probably did not attend Licencing Court in person, his sureties were Benjamin Lawton and Joseph Lawton of the 'Swan Inn' and the 'Woolpack' in Dobcross.
Note in Radcliffe Baptism Register - Benjamin Lawton died 24th November 1796 in his 72nd year. Elizabeth his wife died 10th May 1817 in her 58th year. Both are buried at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross.Benjamin Lawton of Dobcross 1724-1796 (Clothier and Innkeeper)
In his book 'Saddleworth Building', W. John Smith describes a 'byre door' in a three-storey warehouse, which can be seen in a narrow entry across from to-day's Swan Inn. The lintel above the door is inscribed 'BL 1748. 'BL' was Benjamin Lawton, innkeeper at the original Swan Inn. There are records showing that a John Lawton and his son Josiah acquired an acre of land here in 1719, and there was a cottage on the land by 1728, but the earliest evidence of an inn comes from the Manchester Mercury newspaper in 1755, when 'the house of Benjamin Lawton of Dobcross' was mentioned in a sale notice. The Swan Inn is first mentioned by name in an auction advertisement published in 1769.
Licensing records show that Benjamin Lawton failed to attend the sessions in 1771 and was marked 'absent' and 'excluded'. He turned up in 1773, but by 1777 he was considered 'old'; Joseph Winterbottom and Joseph Lawton (of the Woolpack Inn, Dobcross) were his sureties. In subsequent years, Benjamin was recorded as 'old' and 'absent', but he continued to run the Swan Inn until about 1796. His son Josiah Lawton then took over the license.
By the end of the eighteenth century there was a variety of buildings on the acre which the Lawton's had acquired back in 1719. According to a deed of 1815, the Swan Inn stables stood on some land, which Benjamin Lawton had given to a Molly Hegginbottom. Another deed (1829) names the inn as 'The Swan with Two Necks' and lists a barn, stables, cowhouses, a shop, cellars, and a newly erected wool warehouse, all tenanted by Josiah Lawton, together with a house and shop tenanted by a George Fielder.
As well as being an Innkeeper, Josiah Lawton is listed as an 'Agent' and 'Commissioned Woolseller' in the 1818-20 business directories. By 1836 however, Josiah's third wife, now widow, Esther (Hegginbottom) Lawton had the license, and the 1841 Census found Thomas Lawton (son of Josiah and 2nd wife Betty Hirstwood) in charge. He was still there 10 years later, along with his wife Jane (Platt) Lawton and eight children. The eldest, Elizabeth, was a barmaid and her sister Hannah was a Waitress.
By the late 1850's time was running out for the Swan Inn. The railway had made long distance horse & coach travel obsolete, and now there were plans to build 'Dobcross New Road' which would by-pass the village with Delph New Road, by connecting New Delph with Uppermill through the Vale of Tame. The nearby Kings Head Inn was better situated at the crossroads in the village so in 1859 Thomas Lawton bought the property.
At the licensing sessions in January 1859, Thomas Lawton transferred the Swan Inn license to Ebenezer Rhodes and at the next licensing transfer sessions he took the license of the Kings Head. Thomas must have been fond of his old Inn sign, as he seems to have taken it with him, and the Kings Head Inn became the 'Swan with Two Necks'. The original Swan Inn was managed by Ebenezer Rhodes for a few months and then the license was allowed to lapse at the transfer sessions.
The old Swan Inn became a private house, the residence of Dr. Ramsden. A deed of 1885 describes the property as 'that messuage or tenement formerly used as an inn called 'The Swan with Two Necks' with barn, stables, brewhouse, cellars and wool warehouse.

- Radcliffe Registers: Weddings A.D. 1754 - 21st February 1754 - James Lawton, Gate-head, Clothier, & Anne Mellor, sojourner in Saddleworth. - It's quite possible that this James Lawton could well be the son of Jonathon Lawton & Ann Buckley B: 01 Oct 1727 - Licensee of the Blue Bell Inn, Old Road, Delph. from 1760-75 (See Text)spouse: Inn, Anne (Nanney) Mellor of Blue Bell (1732 - )BLUE BELL INN, Delph.
The earliest mention of the Blue Bell comes from an advertisment for an auction which was published in the Manchester Mercury newspaper in December 1762. The auction, of some buildings and pasture land at Brimmycroft, was held at the house of James Lawton, '..being the sign of the Blue Bell in Delph...'. Earlier Mr. Lawton is named as an innkeeper in an entry in the Church register for 13th. October 1760 when his son was christened.
The Blue Bell appears to have been the principal inn at Delph in the latter part of the eighteenth century and auctions continued to be held there. In July 1766, for example, there was the sale of an estate in Delph called 'Waters' along with the rights to hunting, hawking and shooting on the land. A description of the 'Bell Inn' property in 1770 mentions the inn, which was a ' messuage of three bays', a coach house, a cottage, a smithy and some outbuildings'.
One of James Lawton's last appearances at the annual alehouse sessions was in September 1771, when his single surety was Robert Buckley, an innkeeper of High Moor. The records for 1773 note that James Lawton was 'infirm', so he probably did not attend in person, his sureties were Benjamin Lawton and Joseph Lawton of the 'Swan Inn' and the 'Woolpack' in Dobcross.
James died in 1775 and it is from the period of his widow's tenancy that there is a description which gives an indication of the site of the Blue Bell on the North side of the River Tame. A report in the Leeds Quarter Sessions concerning the highway from Marsden to Rochdale, '...in through and over the Township of Quick...' says the road runs '...for the space of 6,500 yards in length and eight yards in breadth... from the east end of a certain dwelling house there known by the sign of the Blue Bell in the occupation of Ann Lawton widow, to a certain gate called 'Cherry Clough..'
By 1780 another Joseph Lawton was the tenant of the Blue Bell, but on the 30th. May of that year the Inn was advertised to let on a 15 year lease: 'That well accustomed Inn known by the name of the Blue Bell...together with Brewhouse, Stables, Coach-house, and Farm... situate upon a great Turnpike Road the Midway between Manchester and Huddersfield, Oldham and Marsden, very proper for lodging Gentlemen, Tradesmen and others...'
The new tenant was William Bell and he seems to have stayed at the Blue Bell until the expiry of his lease, when he moved to the New Inn. The last recorded tenant of the Blue Bell was Jonathon Barker, whose name appears in the 1803 alehouse records. The old inn lost it's licence soon after that date and years later, in 1880 the current Bell Buildings were constructed over the site of the old inn.Occupation -

The 1841 Census records Denis as being born in Saddleworth, but the 1851 Census states he was born in Mossley, Lancashire. - There is only one family with surname of Jervis listed in the 1841 Census so it seems likely that Denis Jervis was a sojourner. No record has yet been found of this family in 1861 Census so it's likely the whole family moved location, perhaps to Stroud in Gloucestershire.Occupation -

NOTES:----------child: Lawton, Frederick (1857 - )
I thought I had found the right JOSIAH with the marriage at St Chad's Church, Rochdale 31st August 1857 between Josiah LAWTON and Pamela JARVIS, as this Josiah's father was also Josiah. I still feel that this is the father and son who were living at Hillend in 1841, but as you will see it doesn't fit with him being the son who is buried in the grave at St Chad's lower yard in 1904.
Also Pamela who was much younger than her husband hasn't been honest with her age, she was born at Uppermill in 1839 (registered as Pamila JERVIS). This seems to cause problems with the Census ages, as they seem to have totally forgotten how old they both are, and what gap in age they had earlier decided !!!!
To make matters even more difficult on this first census Josiah was listed as Joshua !!

John Lawton himself only survived his wife Sarah by three years, as he himself nust have been very sick , he saw fit to compile his Last Will and Testament in September 1727, and six months later, he died on the 27th March 1728, aged just 27 years...leaving three infant children, Joseph aged 7 years, daughter Mary, aged 9 years and son Benjamin aged about 2 years of age. And whilst this John now deceased makes no metion in his Will as to who will Foster and raise his orphaned children, he makes his two brothesr Josiah and Joseph executors of his Will....also a Jonathan Lawton acted as witness to he Will.
John Lawton's Last Will & Testament signed 14th September 1727 ( No mention of wife Sarah in his Last Will, so it appears she may have pre-deceased John Lawton in April 1725.)
- Will Proved: 2nd November 1728 - Inheerited half of Father's Estate at Dobcross and Dungebooth.MANOR HOUSE, DOBCROSS
The history of the part on which the Manor House stands is less than clear cut. The earliest reference is a note in the 1719 manor rental:-
1722, 31 July, Agreed further with Josiah Lawton for 2 encroachments called Kiln Ditche and the Intack near Dobcross, his lease to take Effect from Candlemass next, he to pay a guinea fine at the signing of the lease. Yearly Rent 7s.6
This lease must have either been very short term, or have been terminated by mutual agreement, for three years later the Kiln Ditch and Intack (with a dye house), ?hereto in the occupation of Josiah Lawton, late of Dobcross?, was leased to ?John Buckley, of [place missing] the County of Lancashire, yeoman? for 21 years.7 In 1728, John Buckley, then of Brownhill, paid a yearly rent of ?1 for ?encroachments at Dobcross? and continued to pay this until 1743 when the manor rental of that year records that Joseph Lawton had taken over the tenancy at a rent of 1 guinea. The next year Lawton paid ?1 4s 0d and in 1745, it was includ-ed in a 99 year lease to Lawton of Halls tenement near Uppermill.8 The lease read:
?Also all those two closes or parcels of land commonly called or known by the name of the Kilne ditch and the Intack lying and being at Dobcross aforesaid now likewise in the tenure holding or occupation of the said Joseph Lawton his Assigns or Under-tenants containing by estimation Thirty Six perches or thereabouts of statute meas-ure.?
It is unfortunate that the clerk at Wakefield made an error in the acreage and omitted the words ?2 roods?. The area was in fact 2 roods 36 perches as recited in later deeds. Shortly afterwards Benjamin Lawton, Joseph?s brother, built the Swan Inn on the part of this land adjoining the Square.9Occupation - [date: 1720-1727]

- I have searched records extensively, but cannot find any reference to this Marriage of JOHN LAWTON to a SARAH. - I have found just one reference to a MARY LAWTON, daughter of JOHN LAWTON - Baptised at St. Chad's on 5th February 1719 - (Records are very patchy in St. Chad's registers)
There is a John Lawton married a Sarah in Radcliffe Registers in 1725 without any date or references...Maybe a Marriage from Holy Triity or even Mottram Parish

Hi Joan; I had given up my search back in the family a year or so ago, but just on a whim I checked out Kenworthy and saw that you are looking for my grandfather, Abel. My father was Howard Abel Kenworthy, his youngest son. The facts I have are these: Abel was born in Manchester, England on March 26, 1847 and came to this country with his mother, Ann Chapman Kenworthy and her parents, John and Martha (Holt) Chapman. His mother did marry a Lawton and I believe they had one child (maybe named Martha or Carrie. Lawton's also had a general store if I recall the family tales. All this in the Waterbury-Thomaston CT. area. Abel died in 1936. I will delve into my notes, but I do not think I have info on the marriage date of Ann to a Lawton. All the senior members of the family are now gone. Most info I received from my half-brother, John Abel Kenworthy, my father's son from his first marriage. Abel is buried in Old Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury.
Margaret Kenworthy Grevatt
I am looking for information regarding my grand-father, Abel Kenworthy, born Manchester England, Mar 26 1847. He entered this country in Boston in 1852 with his mother, Ann Chapman Kenworthy and her parents, John and Martha (Holt) Chapman. His father was George Kenworthy...he did not come with them. He was reported dead...we don't think so. Family rumor says he entered Canada and then maybe the U.S. Abel married Sarah Titus of Litchfield, CT. Four children: Charles F., Howard A., Edna and Alice. The family settled in Waterbury, CT.
Looking for information concerning ancestry and descendants of Abel Kenworthy born abt. 1847 in England. I have him in Litchfield Co., Connecticut in the 1860 and 1870 census living in the household of Hugh and Ann Lawton. I believe from other posts that Ann was Abel's mother, whose maiden name may have been Chapman. Abel, wife Sarah, children Charles and Alice are listed in the 1880 census for Waterbury, New Haven, CT. In the 1920 and 1930 census, Abel is shown as widowed and living with Son, Charles (also with son, Howard.) I am trying to find a marriage date for Ann Chapman Kenworthy and Hugh Lawton, probably in Litchfield Co., CT.-on ancestry and descendants of Abel Kenworthy born abt. 1847 in England. G'day Trevor;
I am Margaret Kenworthy Grevatt, granddaughter of Abel Kenworthy and daughter of his son, Howard Abel. I am embarrassed to say I have not checked on my ancestry search in some time. I find dead ends that discourage me.
In my searches, I came across Joan Smith who lives in Oklahoma. She is a Lawton decended from a branch of Lawtons who moved West. She is a dedicated researcher and has much information.
Here is the census transcription sent to me by Joan Smith: her email is josmith@isp.com.

I will tell you what I know and what I heard around the dinner table when I was a kid. Most will probably not be news to you, but It's worth a try.
Abel Kenworthy (b. Manchester England March 26, 1847-d.1936) came to this country in March 1852 with his mother Ann Chapman Kenworthy and her parents, John and Martha (Holt) Chapman. Abel's obituary says his father was deceased and named George. They settled in Connecticut. In 1875 Abel married Sarah Scovil Titus and they had 5 children: Charles, Edna, Howard (my father) and Alice. Another son, Burton, died at age 2. I understood that Ann C. Kenworthy married Hugh Lawton, Jr. The Lawton family owned a livery/saloon/store in Thomaston, CT. They had one child, a daughter, named Martha (March 7,1862-July 24,1951), Abel's half sister. Martha married Gustav Rapp (Nov. 28, 1853-Dec. 4, 1930) and they had one child, a boy, who died at birth.
The Lawton members of the family are buried in Thomaston, CT and I have been there and photographed the tomb stones and sent those pictures on to Joan Smith. I will give you some of the names and dates I have in the photos: John Chapman 1798-1872, his wife, Martha Holt 1799-1880. John T. Lawton June 23, 1866-Nov. 17 1913. his wife Florence L. Bissonnette 1866-1930. William Chapman June 18, 1827-Feb 22 1895, his wife Ann Chapman August 20, 1825-June 15, 1905. Hugh Lawton, June 15, 1825, his wife Ann Chapman June 15, 1826-March 12, 1904. All these Marthas and Anns confuse me!
As far as Abel goes, I was only 1 when he died. He was a mechanical engineer (as was my father). "He invented many valuable machines and became interested in organizing the Waterbury (CT) Rolling Mills" so says his obituary. He and his wife, Sarah, purchased property in Cuba and traveled there from Connecticut yearly in the winter. His youngest daughter, Alice, married an Englishman, William Howard, who lived in Cuba. She is buried there.
That's a lot of "stuff". Hope some of it is useful to you. I should have paid more attention around the dinner table when the family was being discussed, but kids are not interested until it is too late to ask an elder.
