The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 22nd September 1928 - Mossley wedding - Miss Dorothy PLATT and Mr F. LAWTON.
Solemnised by the pastor, the Rev. H. W. CALLOW, M.A., B.D., the wedding took place at the Abney Congregational Chapel, on Saturday afternoon, of Miss Dorothy PLATT, only daughter of Mr and Mrs R. E. PLATT, of 7 Livingstone Avenue, and Mr Fred LAWTON, youngest son of Mr and Mrs LAWTON, of Heyheads. The bride, a member of a highly esteemed Mossley family, is closely associated with the Abney Chapel, and a large congregation witnessed the ceremony, Mr Harry WHITE, the Abney organist, playing suitable music.
Given away by her father, the bride looked charming in a dress of ivory silk trimmed with pearls, and a wreath and veil. She carried a bouquet of lilies. Her bridesmaids were Miss Janie HILL, her close personal friend, and Miss Alice LAWTON, the bridegroom's sister. Miss HILL wore a pink dress trimmed with diamante, and Miss LAWTON was attired in blue crepe de chine, trimmed with lace. Both bridesmaids carried exquisite bouquets.
The best man was Mr Clifford PLATT, the bride's brother, and the groomsman, Mr Frank LAWTON, brother of the bridegroom. The reception was held at the Abney School, and afterwards at the bride's home. The bride and bridegroom, who are both associated with the Woodend Mill, received many handsome presents, the bride, a member of the Woodend office staff, received a beautiful timepiece from her colleagues.
Mr and Mrs LAWTON left for a honeymoon at Blackpool and they will reside on the Fox Platt estate.

- NOTES: PLATT Mary - Daughter of James & Ann Platt of Broadhead Noddle. (22/5/1726)spouse: Linfitts, George Lawton of (1719 - 1788)
The fact that Mary Platt who married George Lawton lived at Broadhead Noddle, may well indicate that George Lawton was indeed the son of Richard Lawton of Castleshaw, who lived in the same area and married a local girl.
Mary may possibly died of 'Birth Complications' after giving birth of her daughter Mary, who was buried 11th March 1760 just Five days before Mary Lawton herself.Occupation -

I have definately got this George mixed up as the George at Millbrook in 1841 Census states he was born in Stayley, Cheshire. Yet the St. Chad's Marriage register states it was George Lawton of Quick, Saddleworth that married Mary Ann Farrand at Saddleworth Churchspouse: Quick, Mary Ann Farrand of (1804 - 1858)
This could be the GEORGE LAWTON born at Brunt Hill in Quick - Could be the son of Thomas Lawton as his first born son was named Thomas and born at Quick in Saddleworth. The family moved location to Copley, Stayley.Christening - [place: Find !]

- St. Chad's Marriage Register - Page: 143 - Record: 428 - 23rd November 1828 - GEORGE LAWTON of Quick in this parochial chapelry married Mary Ann Farrand of Quick of the same place, By Banns published. The Rev. Francis Robert Raines (Curate) presiding. Both made their mark X - Witnesses: James Waterhouse and Buckley Holden.
Daughter of Edmund & Hannah Farrand of Saddleworth.spouse: Quick, George Lawton of (~1810 - 1848)
1851 - Widow, aged 48 at 2 Copley Street, Stayley, Cheshire. with 8 Children. This Mary Ann Farrand is recorded as a 'Single Woman' in the St. Chad's Baptism Register of 1825 for her son Thomas Farrand, and the name of the father is not recorded, which gives rise to the question if George Lawton was actually the father of the child.
In 1825 Mary Ann Farrand would have been aged 20 years and George Lawton would have been aged only 15 or 16 years old, which would seem rather odd for a youth of this age to father the child of a 20 year old woman.. However! It could well be that George Lawton and Mary Ann had to wait until George was of 'Full Age' (i.e. 21 years) before they were able to be married within the Anglican Church rules of the day. Which would seem to be indicated by their marriage at St. Chad's Church in 1828, when George Lawton would have been 21 and Mary Ann then aged about 25. - This would seem to be supported by their ages recorded in the 1841 Census, even though we know that the ages of adults in this Census were rounded to the nearest 5 years. i.e. George is recorded as 30 years of age and Mary Ann as 35 years. (Son Thomas Farrand is 15 years, which verifies the fact that he was born in 1825 when Mother Mary Ann was aged 20 years )
Another piece of information that George Lawton was aged 40 years when he died at Stayley and Buried at Mottram Church, further substantiate the fact that he was possibly 4 to 5 years the junior of Mary Ann Farrand.
I have difficulty in placing this George Lawton, as there were several born in Saddleworth and Stayley at this time (1810-11) and although the 1841 Census records George Lawton as being born at Stayley, the marriage records state that both Mary Ann Farrand and George Lawton were from Quick, Saddleworth, althoug it could well be that George Lawton was actually living at Quick in 1828. Church records indicate that Mary Ann was born at Quick, Saddleworth, to Edmund and Hannah Farrand, so it would follow that both George Lawton and Mary Ann Farrand may well have lived and worked in the same neighbourhood in Quick, Saddleworth, and it was in these circumstances that they first met and formed a relationship..Occupation -

1851 - Single, aged 26 (Cotton Spinner) at No.2 Copley Street, Stayley, Cheshire .spouse: Hughes, Phoebe (1823 - )
This THOMAS LAWTON is a real mystery!. Apparently he was born about 1825 - three years before his parents married in November 1828. Considering his father George was only 20 years old when he married Mary Ann Farrand in 1828, and only 40 years when he died in 1848, then it follows that father George would have been age 16/17 years at the time of Thomas's birth, most unlikely I would suspect. This Thomas is not recorded with the family at Huddersfield Road, Copley in the 1841 Census, nor can he be found elsewhere in the 1841 Census after an extensive search of records. Yet in the 1851 Census he is to be found living with his supposed widowed mother Mary Ann and siblings at No.2 Copley Street, Stayley. A similar thorough search of the 1861 Census has also proved unsuccessful in finding this Thomas Lawton.
In the 1841 Census the only Thomas Lawton that remotely matches this Thomas Lawton is to be found at Woodbrook, Shelderslow, the apparent son of John Lawton (Fireman) and Betty Bottomley, who was aged 15 years in 1841..not yet found or recorded in 1851
I have this Thomas Lawton married to MARY ANDREW in 1847, however, this cannot be the correct Thomas, as he is still single in 1851 according to the Census records. - I cannot find him in subsequent Census records either.
I have searched Cheshire BMD for any Deaths of Thomas Lawton between 1851 and 1865 and none correspond to his age. so presume he may have married, but there are no marriages in Tameside between 1851 and 1865 that would identify this Thomas Lawton.
There needs to be more extensive research to postitively identify this Thomas Lawton and substantiate his parentage.Occupation -
