Marriage Note

Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1839 - Mary (Buckley) Fawcet must have been a Widow when she married her Second Husband William Lawton and yet she is identified as a 'Spinster' on the actual Marriage Register at Mottram Church.

LAWTON, William & FAWCET, Mary @ Mottram in Longdendale, St. Michael - Tameside - 1839-CE31/1/290

- NOTE: - Most unusual that this record identifies that MARY BUCKLEY had previously been Married at such a young age! - The only record I can find is of a Mary Buckley marrying a Christopher Fawcet on the 11th Aug 1839 at St Mary's Parish Church, Oldham, Lancashire, England - But this date conflicts with her Marriage to WILLIAM LAWTON on the 21st Jan 1839 - More research is required to identify who she married and when her first husban died.!

Marriage Note

- St Chad's Church, Rochdale - Marriage Register : - Page: 84 - Record 168 - 30th August 1848 - Samuel WOOD - 27 - Bachelor - Blacksmith - living Saddleworth - father James WOOD - Fuller and Esther LAWTON - 21 - Spinster - living Saddleworth - father James LAWTON - Weaver. By banns. Both signed with a X. Witnesses were Joseph LAWTON (X) and Serena BRADBURY (X).

I also got details of James Thomas Lawton's baptism, which is attached. His mother Esther Ann is from Knowl Top so it looks like she is the daughter of Joseph. I now think that the vicar made a mistake when filling in the marriage certificate and put father James instead of Joseph, Samuel WOOD's father was James and maybe he got mixed up.

Serena Bradbury is to be found at the Cotton Tree Inn, Hole House, Ridding, at Royal George in both the 1841 and the 1851 Census, Daughter of John & Martha Bradbury (Publicans) (The Cotton Tree Inn later was renamed 'The Royal George')

Birth Note

- Born: @ Fairbanks Farm, Diggle

Foley, Mary (1660 - 1696) - female
b. 1660 in Hollingreave, Diggle, Saddleworth.
d. OCT_NOV 1696
G'Day Trevor,

This John Foley rented property at Middle Hollingreave (no 88 on 1822 map) and is in the Hearth Taxes 1664-74 and Tithe List of 1669 and he is mentioned as a tenant at Middle Hollinbgreave in a deed of 1662. Mary Foley is listed the 1662 baptisms at St. Chad's

John Lawton's children are listed in his will and there his eldest son is stated to be a minor and not yet 21. When it was proved in Oct 1696 he is still a minor, and his uncles were appointed guardians, hence the statements on the tree that the children were born after 1677 (should actually be 1676). I think my statement that John was born in 1677 is an error and should read Bap 1687 - a baptism of John son of John Lawton is in the registers. John Lawton, a child, is also mentioned as son of John and Mary Lawton in John Foley's will of 1688. The baptisms of Mary and Sarah are recorded but there is some doubt here as there appear to be two John Lawton's having children at thet time.

Best Wishes, Mike Buckley

b. Abt 1742 in Warlow Clough, Friezland, Saddleworth.
bur. 1846
- Cannot find any relevant ROBERT LAWTON - Born or Baptised about this this timeframe. - Especially in Saddleworth

- NOTES: No ROBERT LAWTON found in Radcliffes Baptism Registers who would meet the criteria for a likely husband of Mary Tomson. Quite likely that this Robert Lawton originated from either Mottram Parish of even St, George's in Mossley.

- ROBERT, HUGH, GERVAS, GEORGE, were predominatly forenames found in the Mottram, Ashton, Mossley, Stayley Parishes - Whereas: JOHN, JONATHAN, JAMES, JOSIAH & THOMAS were names associated mainley with Saddlewworth. - Baptism Records are missing form St. Michael's Ashton-u-Lyne between the years 1728 to 1758 - Son we are unable to verify if ROBERT was Baptised at Ashton-u-Lyne

There appears to be every problability that the "Sarah Dyson" living with Joe & Mary (Nield) Lawton in the 1841 & 1851 Census returns, was in fact the Sarah Garside who married Jonathon Nield. I can only find documentation for one child from that marriage which was 'Mary', but there is also a Jonathon Nield born 1806 who may also be a child of Jonathon & Sarah. It looks likely that Jonathon Nield died sometime before 1816 and that Sarah (Garside) Nield re-married to James Dyson (See Below) - Although the marriage was in Middleton it seems some children were born in Mossley.

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday 13th June 1908 - Saddleworth Woman's death in New Zealand

We sympathise deeply with Mr and Mrs Wright GARTSIDE of the Horse and Jockey Inn, Bleakhey Nook, Delph, in the sad loss they have sustained by the death in New Zealand of their married daughter, Clara. The deceased, who was only 31 years of age, was married about 9 years ago to Mr William H. RICHARDS, also of Delph, and bore him three children, all boys, and now respectively aged 8 years, 4 years, and 1 1/2 years.

The couple emigrated to New Zealand some 4 years ago, and in April last, Mrs CLARA RICHARDS, who was suffering from appendicitis underwent an operation in the Wellington Hospital, and not recovering from the shock, she passed away on the 22nd of that month. The funeral took place three days later at Karori, the Rev. D. JENKINS being the officiating minister. The bereaved children are now on their way to England, and on their arrival will be taken in charge by Mr and Mrs GARTSIDE their grandparents.
