One of the founders of Micklehurst Cricket Club in 1890Don't know if this is the correct WILFRED LAWTON - Investigate !!!
Another "interesting" item for a different branch of the LAWTON's, i think !!. The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - 12th January 1929 - Diving for gold - Former Mossley man's claim - remarkable experiments. Formerly a member of the firm of Messrs. Geo. LAWTON and Sons Ltd., Mossley and a brother of Mr Carl LAWTON, Micklehurst, Mr Wilfred LAWTON, of Shinfield, near Reading, makes a remarkable claim as a diviner of gold and other minerals and his experiments have attracted the attention of the National Press. Successful divining of gold, platinum, silver, copper, tin, oil, coal, and other minerals - with a great improvement of the methods of the water diviner - is the substance of Mr LAWTON's claim.Mr LAWTON was interested for several years, as an amateur, in water divining. He told the Press:-"I did water divining in Rhodesia where they put me through tests which were satisfactory. About eight years ago I began to think of the possibility of discovering oil and minerals by a similar method. I went to Malay, a country which is rich in minerals and found coal on some property. I am now waiting to hear the result of the development. I also found an ounce of tin that had been buried purposely to a depth of 2,500 ft."Metal "affinities""I believe every metal has its affinity and for metal divining I use twigs I obtained in Rhodesia. Each twig is scooped out and filled with the chemical or metallic filling which I regard as the affinity of the chemical or metal I am seeking. The composition of the filling is my secret."I use small detachable iron springs on the twigs in place of the natural wooden forks. These ensure that the twigs cannot be moved while the hands are seen to be steady and give more 'play' to the divining reactions of the twig when they come into force. Depth, 3ft or 3,000ft, or distance is no object. These twigs have reacted to radium in the Radium Institute".Mr LAWTON then demonstrated some of his claims. He placed a small gold chain on the floor and displayed one of his special diving rods. As the rod, held firmly by the springs, was passed over the gold, it bent downwards violently. At increasing distances from the gold, the effect on the rod diminished. *********Occupation -

- Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, 13th June 1908 - Interesting wedding at Saddleworth.
A good deal of pleasant interest was manifested on Whit Tuesday afternoon in the marriage of Mr Wilfred LAWTON, second son of Mr David LAWTON, of Spring Grove, and Miss Martha HUDSON, eldest daughter of the late Mr John HUDSON. The ceremony took place in the Wesleyan Church, Greenfield. The bridesmaid was Miss Lucy AKED and the best man was Mr J. KENWORTHY. The Rev. G. W. TYSON, of Delph, performed the ceremony, and Mr Herbert PEARSON discoursed some pleasing organ music before the nuptials and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" as the party left the chapel. The reception was held in the schoolroom, the bride being one of the teachers and the bridegroom one of the school secretaries. In the evening a merry party assembled in the large upper school to do honour to the occasion. After the wedding repast the young couple went to Southport for their wedding trip, and on their return they are settling at Boarshurst with the hearty good wishes of a large circle of friends. They have been gratified recipients of many valuable and useful tokens of the esteem of a wide circle of friends

- I discovered a WILLIAM LAWTON - Born to James Lawton of Thornley (Thorn Lee) Grotton, Lydgate Parish, and his wife ROSY - (ROSE WHITELY) - Baptised on 25th January 1789 @ Lydgate St. Annes' Church - Is it a coincudence that William & Sally's first born Daughter born at Delph was named ROSA and a subsequent First Daughter of the First Son of William & Sally - JAMES LAWTON, was named ROSETTA - Perhaps too much of a coincidence and more likely the Mattiarch Name of ROSE was passed down the the children, spouse: Wordsworth, Sally (~1790 - 1858)

Son of George & Ann Lawton
Could this be the William Lawton that married Ellen (Helen) Andrew at Manchester Cathedral in 1842Baptism - [date: 02 JUN 1811] [place: Manchester Cathedral. Manchester. Lancs;]
NOTES: on William Lawton - (NO MALE ISSUE FROM THIS PERSON)spouse: Andrew, Ellen (Helen) (1816 - 1844)
In the 1841 Census - William Lawton was aged 30 and a Publican, his wife Ellen (Andrew) Lawton was aged 25 and they were living at the White Hart Inn, Stamford Street, Mossley Cross (Later to become The Church Inn & Billy Goat Inn, opposite St. Georges Church). They had two children - Mary Mellor Lawton aged 3 years and also Ann Lawton aged 2 months who died in infancy. They also had another daughter Frances M Lawton born in 1842 and Baptised at St. Georges Church on 6th November 1842.
Noe* - The fact that two of his daughters had the christian name of ' Mellor ' as a middle name may be of some significance. Seeing tha his wife's maiden name was Andrew perhaps 'Mellor' was his mothers maiden name.....conjecture on my part!
In the 1851 Census William Lawton was a Widower aged 40, and still at The White Hart Inn, but his Brother-in-Law, William Moss, aged 36 was now listed as Publican, with his wife Sarah (Lawton) Moss was aged 37 with 5 chidren. William Lawton's daughters Mary & Frances were living with their Grandmother Elizabeth Andrew in Micklehurst.

The occupation of 'Pavior' was a person employed in laying paving stones to roadways, sidewalks/pavements, courtyards, farmyards, backyards, and even in hte kitchens and living rooms of the houses themselves. Yorkshire Sandstone flagstones were used extensively in houses, courtyards, and pavements. Whilst Gritstone and Granite cobblestones and sett-stones were the materials that main roads and farmyards were made of. These 'Pavior' workers must have been very busy and extensively employed in the late 18th and early 19th Century. Where, in Mossley, even flagstone pavers were laid upon the top of wooden flooring in many houses and still remain so today.Occupation -

- NOTE: - The records in the 1861 England Census for this LAWTON family seem to be completly mixed up and wrongly transcribed as LOWTO; not LAWTON - There is a GEORGE LAWTON recorded aged 10 years who should be GEORGE HENRY - (B: 1859) and aged 10 months, and the ages of other children are incorrect. - e.g child WILLIAM LAWTON is recorded as being Born: 1849, when in fact he was Born in 1856 - child JOSEPH LAWTON is recorded as being Born: 1847 whereas he was Born: in 1851 - BETTY HYAM, I suspect is PEGGY ELLAM, Williams Mother (B: 1791) aged 73 which is about correct.Occupation -

- NOTE: - Most unusual that this record identifies that MARY BUCKLEY had previously been Married at such a young age! - The only record I can find is of a Mary Buckley marrying a Christopher Fawcet on the 11th Aug 1839 at St Mary's Parish Church, Oldham, Lancashire, England - But this date conflicts with her Marriage to WILLIAM LAWTON on the 21st Jan 1839 - More research is required to identify who she married and when her first husban died.!

The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, September 16th, 1916.
Former Mossley man. Drowned in attempting to rescue a companion.
Successful Philadelphian lawyer.
The public of Philadelphia, U.S.A., has recently been greatly moved by the sacrifice of one of its citizens, who lost his life in attempting to rescue a comrade from drowning. The man was William LAWTON, son of Mr and Mrs Tom LAWTON, who left Mossley for the U.S.A., some 19 years ago. They lived at Old Brow, Mossley, and both Mr and Mrs LAWTON were members of the U.M. Church, choir.
Mr William LAWTON, although only 28 years of age, has attained some fame as a lawyer in Philadelphia. He was a graduate of the Temple University Law School, and was recognised as a real estate expert. At the time of his death he was assistant title officer of the People's Trust Company, of Philadelphia. He was accounting warden of the St. Timothy's Protestant Episcopal Church, Roxborough, and a member of the Wissahickon Glee Club. He was also identified with the Roxborough Masonic Lodge, and some years ago he wrote a history of the lodge. He was a member of the board of managers of St Timothy's hospital. Mr LAWTON was unmarried, and lived with his parents at 5,603 Ridge Avenue, Roxborough.
On Saturday, August 19th, Mr LAWTON was at Manasquan, New Jersey in charge of about 20 choir boys from his church, and with him was his friend Mr David STRAUSS, president of the State Board of Pharmacy, of New Jersey. Mr STRAUSS went swimming in the sea about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. He was observed to be in difficulties, and threw up his hands and disappeared.
In the presence of a thousand people Mr LAWTON took off his coat and shoes and went to the rescue. When about 150 yards from the shore Mr LAWTON himself was seen to be in difficulties owing to an undercurrent. Other swimmers went out to the rescue of both the struggling men, but were soon in difficulties themselves.
A coastguardman named FALKENBURG donned a cork jacket, and managed to hold up Mr STRAUSS until the arrival of a surf boat. All were got out of the water except Mr LAWTON, who had quite disappeared, but it was found impossible to resuscitate Mr STRAUSS.
Mr LAWTON's parents patrolled the beach all night, and on the Sunday afternoon the body of their son was washed ashore after being in the water 26 hours.
The remains were interred in the burial ground of St Timothy's Church, on Wednesday August 23rd in the presence of large crowds of people. Over 100 Freemasons were present, one of them actually travelling over 1,000 miles to pay the last respects to his friend. After the committal service the Grand Master of the Freemasons conducted a short service. He threw a scroll into the grave and also a white lambskin apron, exclaiming as he did so "Brother, you were faultless, therefore we give you this pure lambskin".
A former Mossley lady, writing from Philadelphia, says: "The church was crowded rich and poor alike wishing to do all honour to a man who was so greatly loved and respected. I never saw so many flowers at a funeral in all my life".
