- NOTE: - Not really sure about Hugh & Betty being the parents of this John Lawton, or having the correct John Lawton who married Hannah Winterbottom......This John would have been 30 years old when he married.....which seems inappropriate for the time, and the number and birth dates of their children. A John Lawton married Hannah Wild from Hollingworth on 6th June 1776 at Mottram Church so I may be getting their children mixed up. This 'John Lawton' was named as executor in the Will of his father Joseph Lawton of Earnshaw Lane Farm, he would have been aged 27 years at the time of his fathers death in 1803. - In the Will of Joseph Lawton, he states that the farm at Earnshaws remain in the hands of his executors until his youngest child '(Betty) reaches the age of 21....Betty being 8 years old at the time of her fathers death would have a further 13 years to attain the age 21 in the year 1816, by which time John Lawton (Executor) would have been aged 40 years old.
This is John Lawton of Earnshaw Farm, (Elder brother of Joseph Lawton of Ponge), who married Mary Shaw in 1803. - His daughters, Hannah, Alice and Sarah were all named beneficaries of Uncle Joseph Lawton's Will of 1848.
In the 1841 Census at Earnshaw Lane, there is a 'Mary Lawton' (Farmer) age 50 living next door to this John & Mary, with a 'Thomas Lawton' aged 22 her son, Mary's daughter Hannah having died at Earnshaw Lane in 1837.
1851 - Aged 74 (Farmer) at Earnshaw Lane, Stayley, brother of Joseph Lawton (Woollen Manufacturer) of Ponge Buildings, Micklehurst Road.
- It seems ironic that all John Lawton's daughters (with the exception of Sarah) were to die at reasonallby "Early Age", Five of the six children dying before 1860 at Earnshaw Farm. With only one 'Hannah' marrying.a James Lees in 1835.- All the other daughters remained 'Spinsters' -Occupation -

- St. Chad's Baptism Register - 1782 - 6th October 1782 - JOHN LAWTON - Son of James Lawton, Clothier, and Rose his wife of Baggeley (sic)
- NOTE: - Died in 1808 - But the Will of Luke Lawton signed by him in 1808 is written: - Luke Lawton the testator have hereunto set and put my Hand and Seal this Twenty Ninth Day of October in the Year of Our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and Eight. So it follows that JOHN LAWTON his 1st Son was already deceased by October 1808 - A detailed study of the actual Death Register confirms it was actually 13th July 1808 and not 1809 that John Lawton was Buried.spouse: Lawton, Ann Shaw (*1783 - )
Mentioned in the Will of his Father Luke in 1808 as 'Deceased' and a legacy left to his daughter "Mary Lawton the daughter of my late son John Lawton"
I would favour this John Lawton to be the one who married ANN SHAW at Mottram Church on the 6th January 1806, the reason being that the marriage to Ann Whitehead on 26th February 1804, should have produced children before 1808 - Whereas only one child MARY was born of this marriage about February 1808 - John Lawton himself died in July 1808 - So John's wife ANN may well have concieved in May/June of 1807 - Needs verifying!Burial - [date: 13 JUL 1807] [place: St. George's Churchyard, Mossley.]
- NOTE: - This date of 13th July 1809 is questionable, as in his Father's (Luke Lawton) Will of October 1808 is written: Luke Lawton the testator have hereunto set and put my Hand and Seal this Twenty Ninth Day of October in the Year of Our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and Eight. - So it follows that John Lawton his son was already deceased in October 1808 - Perhaps the date is worth examining in the Burial Register to see if it could be 13th July 1808 instead of 1809. - Now verified as 13th July 1807 (See Below)

NOTES: on JOHN LAWTON (1783-1869)spouse: Turner, Hannah (~1788 - 1871)
I am now wondering if I have the correct JOHN LAWTON here as son of George!, as there was a John Lawton married to Eliza and family at Moorgate/01 who may well be the son of George - This 'John Lawton' was almost certainly born in 1783 - although the 1841 Census has him as born 1786 this is probably a 'Rounded' figure. In subsequent Census he is recorded as being born in 1783. (Addenda 2012) The John Lawton at Moorgate Married Eliza Whitehead in 1832 and emigrated to the USA about 1847
This is likely John Lawton the father of Sarah Ann Lawton who died in 1823 aged 9 years
1841 Census - Aged 55 (Woollen Slubber) at Thornes Clough Mill, Diggle.

- Radcliffe Registers of Holy Trinity, Dobcross - Christenings 1790 - 14th November 1790 - JOHN LAWTON, Son of James & Hannah Lawton of Greaves.
- Records from both 184 & 1851 Census - Plus the Death & Burial Records have this JOHN LAWTON as being Born: about 1795/6 and not 1792 as I have recorded - a difference of about 4 yearsspouse: Lawton, Hannah ? (~1795 - <1841)
- 1851 - Widower, aged 60 (Farmer of 20 acres) at Little Bank Farm, Road End, Carrbrook. with children George (29) Elizabeth (27) and John (26)
Property: - 1873 - Land Owners records show John Lawton held 270+ acres of land worth 520 pounds. (Obviously another John Lawton)
This John Lawton died a widower between the years 1851 & 1861, as in the 1861 Census his son George Lawton and wife Ann are tenants of 'Little Bank Farm" at Stayley Wood.
In the 1851 Census living in the cottage at Little Bank Farm - there is a Joseph Schofield, aged 66 - (Woollen Weaver) and a Chelsea Pensioner who was Born: Saddleworth with his wife Betty Schofield aged 58 born at Stayley Cheshire, with unmarried children - James Schofield aged 24, Amelia Schofield, aged 21 Mary Schofield, aged 19, and Elizabeth Schofield, aged 16.
Whilst living at 'Fold Farm' just above Little Bank Farm was the Family of John & Lucy Shaw and children.- Notes on the Family of John & Hannah Lawton of Little Bank Farm, Stayley Wood, Millbrook, Cheshire.
SARAH LAWTON - Born: 1816 - Sarah is found at Little Bank Farm aged 16 in the 1841 Census, still living with her parent & family. But by 1851 she is no longer with them and possibly married.....needs researching
THOMAS LAWTON - Born: 1819 - Thomas & younger brother James took the tenacy of "North Britton Farm" at the head of Swineshaw in Hollingworth between the years 1851 & 1861, possibly after their father John Lawton died at Little Bank. They later moved location to the adjoining next farm at "Middle Bank" on Motrram Moor at Hollingworth. Thomas eventually married Widow Harriet Cooper of Glossop in 1862 when at the age of 43 years. Harriet already had one son Thomas Willam Cooper born in 1861, and went on to bear Thomas Lawton three more children from the marriage,
GEORGE LAWTON - Born: 1822 - On the death of his father John Lawton between the years of 1851 & 1861, son George took over the tenancy of Little Bank Farm and was living there in 1861, but by 1871 George and Family had moved accross to Carrbrook Fold, just above Little Bank Farm, but whether he lived at "Fold Farm" itself, or occupied one of the several cottages there is not yet known. George and his family remained at "Carrbrook Fold" at the top of Swallow Lane up until his untimely death in 1869 at the age of 47 years.
JAMES LAWTON - Born: Co-habited with elder brother Thomas Lawton for a number of years at "North Britton Farm" and later "Middle Bank Farm" on Mottram Moor, Hollingworth, Cheshire. In the 1861 Census at Middle Bank Farm, this James is aged 40 years and recorded as being 'Married' but there are no females in the household at the time, so whether he had been married and his wife passed away prior to 1861, or it is just a transcription error reamins open to conjecture. But by the 1871 Census James is no longer to found at Middle Bank.
ELIZABETH LAWTON - Born: 1824 - Was baptism at Mottram Church on 18th January 1824 - Elizabeth, daughter of John & Hannah Lawton of Stayley (Clothier)
JOHN LAWTON - Born: 1826 @ Little Bank Farm, Stayley Wood, Millbrook. - Baptism 26 Feb 1826 - John, son of John & Hannah Lawton of Stayley Wood(Clothier) - Took over the tenacy of 'Fields Farm' off School Lane, Moorgate between the years 1851 & 1861, and there he farmed 26 acres - A batchelor all his life he never married and died at Fields Farm, Moorgate in - By the 1871 Census - John was still a Batchelor, aged 45 (Farmer of 30 acres) at Fields Farm, Moorgate, Carrbrook. My wife Dorothy and I have a photograph of James Lawton (born 1819) dressed I believe in masonic garb. When my son Malcolm is next here I will ask him to scan it and will send you a copy.
Like you I have the feeling that your Lawtons and those who married Dorothy's Platt family must be related in some way. The proximity of the graves and the use of certain names, especially Charles, suggests some degree of cousinship. I have been looking at your Lawtons which I understand you have taken back as far as James Lawton (born 18th Sept. 1813, died 1st Jan. 1880). Clearly he cannot be the son of Charles and Mercy as their son James married Sarah Platt.
However, there is another branch of the Lawtons which also married into Dorothy's Platt family. Both these Lawton families go back I believe to the Lawtons of Gatehead. This second branch baptised many of their children at Delph Independent Chapel, but there are a few baptisms missing. A John Lawton of Gatehead, baptised 28th October, 1792 at Holy Trinity, Dobcross, lived at Gatehead (1814), Green Ash (1821-1841), Setstones (1851) Green Lane (1870). He died 25th October and was buried 31st October, 1870 at Delph Independent. This John married a Hannah but no marriage has been found for them. The earliest child found for this couple was an Abram Lawton, bapt. 14th October, 1814 at Delph Independent, and died 28th March, 1853. He was buried at Chelford, Cheshire!
Abram had a nephew, also named Abram, who was born c. 1857. He married Mina Louisa Platt (born 1860). This latter Abram was a joint executor of the will of the James Lawton who married Sarah Platt. - Abram (bapt. 1814) had a son Charles (1861-1883). - I wonder if your James (born Sept. 1813) was the son of John and Hannah whose earliest child known to me was Abram bapt. October 1814. The baptism of their next child Esther, born c. 1816 has not been found. The baptism of a son Alfred Hugo, born c. 1824 has also not been found. The youngest child Hannah was born 9 July 1838. It may be significant that the first child of your James and Alice was given the name John Frederick.
Incidentally, I noticed many years ago the following marriage of which you may already have details: Charles Inkerman Lawton married Eliza Ann Roberts, age 24, spinster, frame tenter, Grasscroft (father James Roberts, Carter) on 30th July, 1883 at St. Chad, Saddleworth.Occupation -

1847 - Emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA with his wife and family, aboard the ship 'North Star', arriving at Philadephia on the 23rd June 1847 - It would then appear that this John Lawton either died or left his wife Eliza and family before the 1850 Census, as Eliza and children are to be found living with her brother 'Henry Whitehead' at Union, Clearfield, Pennsylvania. There is no record of John Lawton in either the 1850 or subsequent Census returns.Occupation -

Just to let you know that Alison has made a breaktrough with regards JOHN & CATHERINE (Bowker) LAWTON - apparently they were married about 1832 and had several children baptised at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dukinfield. Hugh Lawton in 1833, Mary Lawton in 1835, Joseph & Elizabeth Ann Lawton (Twins) on 5th Jul 1838, as for the others Catherine 1840, Peter 1842 and the elusive AUSTIN 1843/5 we still haven't found. Does the Tameside BMD keep seperate records for Catholic Church births. - Kind Regards: Trevor Lawton.
Hi, Trevor - Sorry for the delay - I've been doing a bit of sleuthing!!
I found the twins' birth entries in Dukinfield, Duk2/28 and Duk2/29. Their mum's maiden name is down as Brammer. I found Catherine in 1839, but she is the daughter of James and Betty Woolley. I found Peter, the reference is Duk10/61 and his mum's maiden name is down as Brannon. It is possible to do a 'Simple Listing' on cheshire bmd, whereby you can view all the births with the beginning letter. I put in 'L' to see if there was a child Austin and he was registered as Langston. His parents couldn't sign their name, so the Registrar probably misheard it. Catherine's maiden name is down as Brammall!! The reference is Duk7/78 in June 1841.
I hope this clears it up for you. - Kind regards: JosieOccupation -
