- NOTES: on Hannah Redfern (1788-1870)spouse: Hodkin, George (1788 - 1840)
-------------------------------------------------------------
A gravestone in Taddington Churchyard has a memorial to two Redfern sisters who were born in Heywood, Lancashire, and came to Taddington to live. I suspect they are related to this Hannah Redfern, as after the death of Husband George, a number of her children went over to Middleton & Heywood Nr. Oldham to live, perhaps to stay with relatives. In the 1841 Census of Taddington, daughter Emma Hodkin is living and working as a 'Female Servant' to Mary Redfern Senior (Hannah's Mother), and her spinster daughters Ann and Mary
1841 UK Census - Widow, Aged 52, (Farmer) at Blackwell, Derbyshire.
Widow Hannah (Redfern) Hodkin emigrated to America about 1842-45 after the death of husband George Hodkin in 1841with several of her youngest children

- NOTES: - On Mary Redfern (Senior) - (1788-1850) - Suspected daughter of Thomas and Mary Dobson of Fullwood, Prston, Lancashirespouse: Redfern, Joseph (~1779 - 1826)
- The Mysterious Redfearn Family - I now have a new theory about both Mary & Hannah Redfern of Taddington. - Since I discovered the Burial of Mary Redfern (Senior) in St. Luke's Churchyard, at Heywood, Lancs; Where she is interred with her late Husband JOSEPH REDFEARN who died age 47 years at Dawson Fold in Heywood, Nr. Bury in Lancashire in 1826 - Also in the same Grave is an infant Son James Redfrearn who died at Dawson Fold aged 10 month in 1825. - I am of the opinion that Mary Redfearn was left a Widow with perhaps three children - Ann (1808) aged 18 - William (1810) - aged 16 - and Mary (1815) aged 11 years - The bereaved family then moved location to Taddington, Derbyshire to live in close proximity to Mary's Sister-in-Law, HANNAH (Redfearn) HODKIN, wife of GEORGE HODKIN, who was then living at Balckwell with around 11 children of her own.
- In the 1841 UK Census - Mary Redfern (Senior) is recorded as being 23 years of age, which is a misread transcript error by the enumerator, (the Five is obscure, mistaken as a Two) as her age is actually 53 years, (B: 1788) and living on independent means. Her two 'Spinster' daughters Ann (29) and Mary (26), who are also independent, with no occupation, All are living at Five Wells, Taddington Village in Derbyshire. Residing with them as a female servant girl is Mary's Niece, Emma Hodkin aged 9, the daughter of George Hodkin and (Sister-in-Law) Hannah (Redfern) Hodkin of Blackwell.
This is probably the only pointer at this point in time which links this 'Redfern' family to the Hodkin's at Blackwell, and their origins from Heywood in Lancashire, These details also verifies the link between Hannah (Redfern) Hodkin and this line of 'Redferns' - Obviously 'Hannah Redfern' must have been the 'Sister' of Mary Redfern's late husband Joseph Redfern, who died in 1826, as they were born about the same year. - Mary's husband JOSEPH, and likely brother of Hannah has been identified by burial details - I also discovered that this MARY REDFEARN, died at Bakewell on 18th March 1850 and was Buried in St. Luke's Churchyard at Heywood, Nr. Rochdale, Lancashire aged 62 years, on the 26th March 1850. (Born: 1788) in Grave: No. 93, along with her late husband Joseph and infant son James (10 months) -
After the Death of Mother Mary Redfern Senior, her two daughters seem to have parted ways before the 1851 Census, as Daughter Ann Redfern is to found living on her own, a lady of independent mead and the owner of property, at London Road, Taddington. Whilst younger Sister Mary had moved to Ireland - By 1861 Independent Sister ANN REDFERN had moved back into Lodgings, Boarding at Blackwell and living with Farmers John & Martha Webster and family (perhaps relations) and it appears she may have died there about the 8th January 1862, and was Buried in Taddington Churchyard on the 11th January 1862. - Sister Mary Redfern on the other hand in 1862 was living at Hollybrook House, Bray, County Wiclow, Ireland - Mary then dissapears for a few years until 1891 Census When we find MARY REDFERN on her own, back in Taddington at No. 16 High Street, Taddington, Derbyshire - Living in Taddington township just below No.13 High Street, the Weslyian Chapel and No.16 Shoemakers Shop.- Next was "The Travellers Rest" Public House and then the 'Vicarage'. - Mary Redfern - Head - Spinster - age 76 - Independent Means - B: (1815) @ Heywood, Lancashire - Also Martha A Gould - Spinster - age 27 - Female Servant - B: Sheldon, Derbyshire and her daughter Hannah Gould - Spinster - age 18 - Domestic Servant - B: Chelmorton, Derbyshire.
- REDFERN - ANN - 28th February 1862 - The Will of ANN REDFERN - Late of Taddington in the Parish of Bakewell in the County of Derby - Spinster, deceased - Who died the 8th January 1862 at Taddington aforesaid, Was proved at Derby by the Oaths of MARY REDFERN of Hollybrook Bray, in the County of Wicklow,in Ireland, Spinster the Sister, and Benjamin Hambleton of Taddington aforesaid, Cordwainer, two of the Executors. - Effects: Under ?300
- REDFERN - MARY - 22nd August 1891 - The Will with a Codicil of Mary Redfern. Late of Taddington, Nr. Bakewell in the County of Derby - Spinster - Who died 24th July 1891 at Taddington, was proved at Derby by JOHN THOMAS REDFERN of No.7 Bradford Terrace, Bury, in the County of Lancaster - Draughtsman - One of the surviving Executors. - Effects: ?1,841 -5dh - 8d.
- NOTE: - JOHN THOMAS REDFERN was the Son of JOHN SMITH REDFERN & his wife ELIZABETH (HAYES) REDFERN of Bury, Lancashire.- Mary Redfearn - [1787-1850]
- The Mysterious Redfearn Family - I now have a new theory about both Mary & Hannah Redfern of Taddington. - Since I discovered the Burial of Mary Redfern (Senior) in St. Luke's Churchyard, at Heywood, Lancs; Where she is interred with her late Husband JOSEPH REDFEARN who died age 47 years at Dawson Fold in Heywood in 1826 - Also in the same Grave is an infant Son James Redfrearn who died at Dawson Fold aged 10 month in 1825. - I am of the opinion that Mary Redfearn was left a Widow with perhaps three children - Ann (1808) aged 18 - William (1810) - aged 16 - and Mary (1815) aged 11 years - The bereaved family then moved location to Taddington, Derbyshire to live in close proximity to Mary's Sister HANNAH (Redfearn) HODKIN who was then living at Balckwell with around 11 children of her own.

Man (81) badly burned as fire sweeps living-room
An 81-Year-Old Mossley man was severely burned from the waist down in a fire which damaged the living-room of his terraced cottage on Monday morning.
He is Mr. Andrew Reoch, a widower, who lives alone, at 5 Andrews Buildings, off Micklehurst Road. A retired Loom Tuner, Mr. Reoch was found lying on the floor in the corner of the living-room. A chair, which formed part of a three-piece suite, was found badly burned in another part of the room. He was taken to Ashton General Hospital, where he was said on Tuesday to be "poorly", but his condition was described as "fair" yesterday. Next door neighbour, Mr. Frank Harrop, of 3 Andrews Buildings, said he and other members of his family had seen smoke coming out of Mr. Reoch's chimney at about 9.00.a.m.; "We thought it was a sweal, but about 11.00.a.m. there was smoke and soot seeping it's way into our house and we spotted smoke coming out of the windows of the cottage next door" Mr. Harrop said.
Another neighbour Mrs. Gertrude Tinsley, of 7 Andrews Buildings, had a key to Mr. Reoch's home, but the neighbours were unable to get into the house by the front door, presumably because either the catch was on the door, or the door was bolted from the inside. "Then we found that two men had got into the house the back way. They went in through all the smoke with wet towels over their faces. Mr. Reoch was inside". Mr. Harrop said. "We got him out and I called an ambulance".
Mr. Reoch is described, by his neighbours as quite an active man, who does not smoke. He has a step-daughter living in Hull and a step-son in Whitley Bay.
Neighbours beaten back by Smoke [The Reporter - February 4th 1972]
Trying to get into a smoke filled house, two neighbours were beaten back because of the density of the smoke, an inquest in Ashton General Hospital were told on Wednesday, when an accidental death verdict was recorded on a Mossley man who died in hospital where he was taken suffering from severe burns.
Retired Loom Tuner, Mr. Andrew Reoch, aged 81, of 5 Andrews Buildings, died on Sunday after the fire at his home on January 24th.
Consultant pathologist Dr. Samuel H. Jackson, said Mr. Reoch died from from heart failure due to bronchial-pneumonia, with the severe burning a contributory cause.
The County Coroner, Mr. Leonard Gorodkin, was told that , while in hospital Mr. Reoch could remember nothing about the fire, but said he had done his washing and was sitting in front of the fire reading his newspaper.
Scorched
Mrs. Gertrude Tinsley, of 7 Andrews Buildings, said that she went to open the front door with a key, but failed and could see nothing through the window because of the smoke. She went back to her home and got a towel and tried again to get into the house but failed. Someone else tried to get inside but was also beaten back by the smoke. By this time the Fire Brigade were on the way.
Constable James Darnborough told the Coroner that the fire was brought under control by the fire brigade. He saw Mr. Reoch whose trousers were burned away to the waist. Furniture near the fireplace in the living-room was scorched and clothes hung on a clothes-maiden by the fireplace were also scorched.

1841 Census - Widow aged 40 with Seven children - Mother Sarah Rushton aged 80 living with family at Chesterton Villagespouse: Lycett, William (1788 - 1839)
- If this birthdate 1771 is correct, then Charles & Sarah cannot have married in 1783 (which corralates to 12 years) - So it is more likely that the Marriage Date of 1783 is a transcrition error of either 1788 or 1789, which would be supported by the fact that thier childrens birthdates were from 1790 through to 1795, their first child being born in 1791 - So a marriage date of 1788 is more believable.spouse: Fowle, Sarah (~1760 - )
