"THE REPORTER" JULY 2nd. 1932. - MOSSLEY YOUTHS DISTINCTION
First in Lancashire and Cheshire Institute Examinations
Awarded first place in order of merit in the examination of the Union of Lancashire and Cheshire Institutes. Mr. Harry Furness of 8 Fox Platt Terrace, Mossley, not only claims the distinction of being the cleverest student who sat for the examination in the two counties, but has won for Mossley a distinction not before achieved.
This is the first time in the history of the Borough that a student from Mossley Evening Classes has been placed first in order of merit in the whole of Lancashire and Cheshire, though a few years age Mr. Harold Bell - now in the office of the Borough Surveyor - was placed second, whilst Miss Lily Prescott gained third place in the order of merit in the Preliminary Domestic Course in session 1929-30.
Mr. Harry Furness is the only son of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Furness and his father is President of the Mossley Operative Spinners Association.
Aged 19 years, Mr. Furness was in his third - and last year - Commercial Course, and in the examination, held in April, embraced English, Shorthand, Arithmetic, Bookkeeping and Commerce. Mr. Furness attended Livingstone Council School under Mr. A. C. McAdam and subsequently Milton Council School under Mr. J. Dickinson, and in 1927 he was awarded the Gold Medal Merit Award of the Mossley Education Committee as the cleverest scholar of the year.
On Leaving school, he joined the staff in the order department of the Co-operative Wholesale Society Manchester, where he is still engaged and he immediately started to attend the evening classes, taking the subjects above mentioned to fit himself for a commercial career. He had also taken a summer course in Shorthand at Hegginbottom technical School in Ashton.I've been trying to work out who was the Mother of Mary HARLING, Grand Daughter of Anthony and Sarah FURNESS. I have found only one Daughter for Anothony and Sarah, Jane born 1815. So was Mary, Jane's Daughter???
Any clues???
The other ones I've been trying to work out is Emma and Ellen FURNESS (twins) born 1847/8 in Golcar, Yorkshire and Martha FURNESS born 1851 in Yorkshire, they are sisters. They are all daughters of Hannah FURNESS born 1822 Slaithwaite, Yorkshire. I had found info that tells me that the three sisters are all Grand Daughters of Alice SYKES born 1800 Slaithwaite, Yorkshire, wife of James SYKES, so Hannah is Alice and James's Daughter. But which FURNESS gentleman did Hannah marry and therefore would be the Father of the three girls???
In your notes you have written - 1881 Grand Daughter of Alice SYKES (81) at Mayalls Buildings, Mossley, living next door but one to George FURNESS and family.
Do you know where that info came from?
It is true that George and family and Alice and family were living in Mayalls Buildings, two doors apart. But I don't think George is the Father of Ellen, Emma and Martha or Husband of Hannah.
George born in 1821, George married Martha HINCHCLIFFE in 1843, and is still with her in 1881. So I don't see how he could of married Hannah before the birth of the twins in 1848, as he was married to Martha 5 years before.
I have not been able to find a marriage record for Hannah or any other details. Looks like I might have to purchase a copy of one of the girls birth certificates, hopefully that will tell us their Father's name.
Can you add any info on them???
I've attached two photos for you.
Norah FURNESS (25/12/1901 - 17/07/2000), was my Grand Mother, Daughter of Percy Elwyn FURNESS (10/06/1863 - 06/08/1956) and Annie WOODWARD (1867 - 13/11/1955). Photo taken about 1919, so Norah was about 18.
The other one is of Percy and Annie, in later life, don't know the date it was taken.
