Very strange set of circumstances attributed to the marriage of Jim Fitton & Mary Bates. - In the 1861 Census, mother Mary (Bates) Fitton is found at Ceshire Street, Bottoms, Stayley, alone with her children, whilst husband Jim Fitton is listed as 'Boarder' living with parents Henry & Susannah Fitton and family. Then in the 1871 Census both Jim & Mary with children are found at Hopkins Farm Cottage, on Luzley Lane, Ridge Hill, Hartshead, a very isolated part of the countryside, and not where you would expect to find a Woollen Weaver who worked in the Mill. Then in 1881 Census wife Mary is found once again alone at Roughtown, with her two son's John Allen and Thomas Fitton, whereas husband Jim Fitton is to be found 'Lodging' with the Wilde Family at Woodend, Roughtown. By the 1891 Census Jim Fitton had died in the January/March quarter of that year, and Widow 'Mary Fitton' is to be found at No.10 Market Street, Mossley.spouse: Bates, Mary (~1832 - )
