1861Census - A Joseph SPENCER aged 12 years - is recorded as the "Son-in-Law" (Watchcap Maker) living withJoseph & Elizabeth Nicholls, at No.6 Duke Street, Coventry. The 'Son-in-Law' title would indicate that Joseph Spencer is the son of Elizabeth Spencers brother. But I would question that title until proven. Could it be that this Joseph Spencer was a previous child of Elizabeth's and she had been widowed before 1852. Or perhaps more lilely an illigitimate child sired by Joseph Nicholls. (Need to verify & authenticate birth).
I have found the Nicholls in 1871 Census. Joseph is away from the family home and in a hotel for the night. Joseph Spencer appears to be in the Cavalry at Barrack Lope in Norwich, Norfolk and Elizabeth and the rest of the family are in Hackney, London. Elizabeth (Clarke) Spencer was born in Coventry Road, Warwick, Warwickshire.

NOTES:spouse: Robertson, Kate (~1855 - )
Looks like Joseph Spencer met and married Kate ? in Norwich where he was serving in the Royal Horse Artillery, then the family moved back to London, living in close proximity to the rest of the Nicholls family. In 1881 Joseph is employed as a 'Horse Keeper' for which he probably had plenty of experience in the Cavalry.
This Joseph SPENCER and family were living at Northampton Street, Islington, London in 1881 Census, close by the Essex Street Tube Station, and just up the A104 road, not far away from King John Street, Clerkenwell where parents Joseph Nicholls and Elizabeth (Spencer) Nicholls were living at the time.

- This child ARETIA STOCKDILL was born when her supposed Mother Hannah Stockdill was about 45 years of age. - Could it be that this child was an illigitimate daughter of Hannah's eldest son Richard Stockdill and his futuer wife Aretia Browne. - I cannot as yet find her mother ARETIA BROWN in the 1841 Census, so it is quite possible that she was employed in 'Service' and subsequently met and formed a romantic attachment to Richard Stockdill in Morley, Yorks: between the Years 1841 and 1844. - It seems very likely that ARETIA BROWNE became pregnant to Richard Stockdill and their illigitmate child was Artrtia was born out-of-wedlock on the 6th March 1844 and was adopted into the family of John & Hannah Stockdill. Then on the 16th June 1844 (after the birth) Aretia Browne married Richard Stockdill at Kennington, Lambeth. - It would appear highly unlikley that John & Hannah Stockdill would have had so much respect and admiration for Aretia Brown, that they named their supposed last child and daughter in honour after her.
