Illigitimate son of Betty Schofield of Barn.
- In almost every Census record from 1851 through to 1891 - John Schofields age equates to him being born in 1786 - Yet there were only two of that name born/baptised that year.spouse: Buckley, Hannah (1789 - 1849)

1861 Census - John Schofield aged 75 (Widower) living at Sott Hole Farm, Spout Brook Lane, Luzley in Stalybridge. Lancashire.
In the 1871 Census at Luzley, John Schofield gives his place of birth as Greenfield, Yorkshire. This John Schofield, through a process of elimination is favoured to be the son of James & Alice (Whitworth) Scholefield of Greenfield End, and not the John Schofield born 1784 at Fairbanks. - QUERY! - A Sub-Note in Radcliffe Baptism register states that this John Schofield died 7th February 1857 at Mount Pleasant, Friezland, aged 78 years, However! If he was 78 when he died, this John would have been born in 1779, not 1786) (2013) - (Refer: - Radcliffe Baptism Register - Book 2 - Page: 251 - 2nd May 1779 - JOHN, Son of James Schofield and Mary his wife of Lane Head, Friezland. )
St. Chad's Marriage Banns Register - Records John Schofield being of Wharmton Bank, and Hannah Buckley of Linfits, Delph.

1. John - Son of Edmund & Hannah of Dobcross - 4.11.1784 - you have excluded
2. John - Son of Thomas & Betty of Road End, Greenfield 25.12.1784 - I have their daughter Betty being baptised on this date and their son John (White Lee) baptised October 1787. However you can definitely EXCLUDE him as
he married one of my WINTERBOTTOM family!!
3. John - Son of James & Mally (Margaret) of Diggle - 13.9.1784 - you have excluded - I have a note that John son James & Mally/ Margaret of Slades Barn died 3/1787 could this be the same child?
4. John - Son of John & Ann of Kinder - 17.4.1785. You can EXCLUDE this one - the child died at Kinder April 1785
And finally!
5. John - Son of James & Alice of Greenfield - 29.1.1786 - As you say this one looks GOOD! - From my notes: (Now Discounted) !!!
James Schofield married Alice Whitworth August 1785 - the Banns register says "both of Greenfield End" Ann Quade's database of marriages suggests that James was the son of Benjamin & Mary of Grange baptised 10.7.1763 - which ties up with the burial entry date/age below. (Don't agree with this Parentage)
James Schofield of Stayley buried 19.9.1830 at 67 years. Register Entry number 631. If this is the correct James, assuming that he had already had his birthday that year - would make year of birth 1763.
Alice Schofield "wife of James" of Stayley buried 22 January 1826 at 65 years. Register entry number 2102

Radcliffe Marriage Registers have a Jane Scholefield who married a John Bent of Almondbury Parish on 4th January 1768 - Could well be this Jane Schofield.

- NOTE: - A 'Mark Scholefield' of Castleshaw, died on 28th July 1743 aged 38 years, a Yeoman, who was buried in St. Chad's Old Graveyard, Uppermill, on the 1st August 1743, who could well have been a brother of John abovespouse: Hadfield, Mary Greaves or (~1696 - 1787)

- The fact that on the Marriage Register of St, Chad's Church, the Witnesses to the Marriage of this John Scholetield to Alice Platt was witnessed by two Joseph Scholefields make me wonder if I have the correct John Scholefield here. - It may well be possible that the two Joseph's were perhaps his Father and a Brother.spouse: Platt, Alice (~1740 - )
