b. Abt 1786 in Delph, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
- I have searched everywhere for infomation on this Esther Lawton without success - However! this may be a long-shot, there is an Esther Lawton whoh married a James Buckley at St. Chad's Parish Church in Rochdale, on 17th February 1815 and signed with an X (her mark) - The witnesses were: Octavious Augustus Lee and John Roberts (who may be a relative) - Page: 265 - Record: 794 - Both James Buckley and Esther Lawton were from Saddleworth. So it could well be that first husband James Lawton expired before 1815 and Esther (Roberts) Lawton remarried. - This is supposition but it may be worth persuing.

- NOTES on JAMES LAWTON - (1813 - 1880)

Searching for 10 years and still unable find any record of James's Birth or Baptism in 1813 records.

1841 Census - Age 28 (Weaver) at Saddleworth Fold / 14. Uppermill.
1851 Census - Aged 37 (Labourer in Stone Quarry) at Shaws, Uppermill.
1861 Census - Aged 47 (Woollen Weaver) at Shaws, Uppermill.
1871 Census - Aged 59 (Gardener) at Shaws, Uppermill.

If we look at naming conventions at that period in time, it was not uncommon for the first born child (either male or female) to be named after the Grandparent from each side of the family. Hence the first daughter was named "ESTHER ANN" which would indicate that James Lawton's mother was Esther, and Alice Schofield's mother was Ann or Hannah. The first boy born was named "JOHN FREDERICK" which would indcate that he was named after Alice's father John Schofield and James's father Frederick - This of course is only an assumtion on my part exploring any means of identifying James Lawton's parents. If we take a look at William Alfred's children, the convention holds true, as he named his first born son "JAMES WILLIAM" after both Grandfathers.

Lived at Shaws (Hamlet) Uppermill for most of his married life; Census returns from 1841 to 1871.

Investigation research into trying to establish the Birthplace and Parentage of James Lawton - Born: 1813
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It would appear from all records that James Lawton's wife (Alice Schofield) Lived at Bank Top on Running Hill near to Saddleworth Church, and later moved with her family down to Saddleworth Fold about 1835.

There were numerous 'LAWTON' individuals living in and around Saddleworth Church area in 1841, including Saddleworth Fold, Shaws, Knowl Top, Cross, and Pin Fold. There were also the Lawton's at Higher Church Bank. - In trying to identify the parents and Family of my James Lawton, I have had to follow an exhaustive process of elimination, by identifying the line of descent from the various 'Lawton' branches from many different locations.....The 'Lawton's of Delph, Dobcross, Diggle, Moorgate, Greenfield, all have to be thoroughly researched and indentified, then linked to each to their own respective line of descent.

I am inclined to believe that 'JAMES LAWTON' was a local lad and lived in the Uppermill area where he first met and became romantically attached to Alice Schofield. Although I have in my records that this James Lawton was born in DELPH, the son of James and Esther Lawton of Hill End, I am now of the opinion that this may not be so. There were several 'Lawton' families living in and around Saddleworth Fold and Shaws, but I cannot yet substantiate that James Lawton is descended from any of these local 'Lawton's' - There was a Giles Lawton aged 20 (Slubber) and his brother James (25) and married sister Betty (Lawton) Kenworthy living at Higher Church Bank & likely emloyed in Mallalieu's Woolen Mill there. - History records that between the years 1800 to 1840, many families live in near poverty, and struggled to feed their families, subsequently there was a high mortality rate of child deaths as infants. Transport was practically non-existant for the poor and working class families, the main mode of transport being pedestrian, so the journey from Greenfield or Uppermill to Delph would have been quite a walking distance. Folks at that time remained very localised and quite usually boys and girls, men and women had more or less grown-up in the same vicinity, attended the same school, and had known each other from childhood. So it seems unlikely that James Lawton from Delph, would have come into close contact with Alice Schofield from Bank Top within her local environment.

It would appear that in 1841 nearly all the inhabitants of Saddleworth Fold were employed as Woollen Hand Loom Weavers and the Women as Woollen Spinners, this cottage industry flourished in Saddleworth until the industrialisation of the Woollen Industry some years later. So it follows that most of the local inhabitants were employed in their home dwelling which is evident by the three storey 'Weavers Cottages' (The Top Floor or Garrett, being the open-plan workplace) situated at Saddleworth Fold and Shaws. If we look at the inhabitants of 'Saddleworth Fold' in 1841, we find that there were 14 dwelling cottages. The first cottage was that of "John Whitehead" who' occupation was recorded as "Woollen Clothier", which implied that he may well have been the manufacturer or merchant....whereas all the remaining 13 dwellings were empoyed as Woollen Spinners and Hand Loom Weavers, quite likely to have been manufacturing pieces of cloth for John Whitehead the 'Clothier'. - (A simular situation was evident in Mossley, where George Lawton was the merchant / clothier for numerous local Hand Loom Weavers, who delivered their woven pieces of cloth every Saturday morning)

1./ - John Whitehead - aged 48 - Woollen Clothier
2./ - Benjamin Winterbottom - aged 49 - Woollen Weaver
3./ - Sarah Wrigley - aged 35 - Woollen Spinner
4./ - John Schofield - aged 50 - Woollen Weaver
5./ - Abel Buckley - aged 33 - Woollen Weaver
6./ - Sarah Whitehead - aged 50 - Woollen Spinner
7./ - Ralph Whitehead - aged 62 - Woollen Weaver
8./ - George Schofield - aged 29 - Woollen Weaver
9./ - James Wrigley - aged 37 - Stone Getter
10./ - Samuel Rhodes - aged 67 - Woollen Waever
11./ - Joshua Wrigley - aged 70 - Labourer
12./ - Samuel Radcliffe - aged 57 - Woollen Weaver
13./ - Nathaniel Bottomley - aged 60 - Woollen Weaver
14./ - James Lawton - aged 27 - Woollen Weaver (Indicative Birth Date: 1814) - [ In the 1841, 1851, 1861 Census records James Lawton's indicative year of birth is 1814 - Whereas in 1871 his birth date is indicated as 1812]

By the 1851 Census, James & Alice Lawton and Family had relocated accross the way to the Hamlet of 'Shaws' another Hamlet of three storey Weavers Cottages, although James had now changed his occupation and was working in the stone quarries on the Moor-side above the Hamlet.

In the 1841 Census of 'Shaws' Hamlet there were 8 dwellings occupied by the following people:

1./ - Joseph Wood - aged 59 - Clothier
2./ - John Lawton - aged 30 - Woollen Weaver - (Brother of Joseph Lawton, Moved to Hay Bottom, Friezland, by 1851, then Carrhill in 1861)
3./ - John Buckley - aged 30 - Clothier
4./ - Mary Schofield - aged 59 - Clothier
5./ - Robert Harrop - aged 80 - Clothier
6./ - Robert Harrop - aged 25 - Clothier
7./ - Samuel Radcliffe - aged 46 - Woollen Weaver
8./ - Sally Broadbent - aged 23 - Woollen Weaver

There was also a large extended family of the 'Lawton' Clan residing at Cross, Knowls, Knowl Top and Pin Fold. - This branch of the 'Lawton's' originated from 'Fairbanks' in Diggle, and obviously migrated along the moorland lane to Uppermill and Greenfield. - It would be easy to make the assumption that our 'James Lawton' was descended from this line of the 'Lawton's' - However! the fact that a son James born to this family and baptised 2nd October 1808 died aged 21 years and was buried at St. Chad's on 25th November 1829 , eliminates our James from this family. - This James was the brother of John Lawton above at 'Shaws' in 1841.

A TRAGEDY RECALLED

Mr. James William Lawton, who was one of the passengers killed in the Mossley Tram Disaster on Friday, had a narrow escape from death by drowning many years ago, when he resided in Uppermill, Saddleworth.

Lawton and his sweetheart, Miss Esther Buckley Schofield (21), also of Uppermill, were "Walking out" on December 27 th. 1885. The night was very dark, and sudden cries for help were heard. It was found that in the darkness both had fallen into the Huddersfield Canal at Wade Lock. Uppermill. Lawton was almost dead when rescued, and it was only with difficulty that animation was restored. Miss Schofield's body was not recovered for some time.

When young, Mr. Lawton was a capital Bass singer. For years he was in the Sam Hauge Minstrel Troupe. He frequently sang at the special services in Saddleworth Church. Mr. Lawton leaves a widow and two children.

Notes on SAM HAGUE MINSTREL TROUPE

Sam Hague was a British blackface minstrel dancer and troupe owner. He was the first white owner of a minstrel troupe composed of black members, and the success he saw with this troupe inspired many other white owners to purchase black companies.

Hague began his career as a performer in British and American minstrel shows. He eventually branched into troupe ownership and management, and in 1866, he formed a ten-member black minstrel troupe called Sam Hague's Slave Troupe of Georgia Minstrels;[1] the first white man to have done so. They toured England for several years, and eventually counted stars such as Bob Height and Charles Hicks among their members. Hague's overseas success lent black minstrelsy a new credence in the United States. By the mid-1870s, most successful American black troupes had been bought by white owners who had followed Hague's lead. When the Slave Troupe returned to the United States, Charles Callender purchased the company.

By 1881, Hague owned a white minstrel troupe composed of British players. The British had a reputation in America for not being as apt at portraying caricatured black roles or performing comedy bits. In response, Sam Hague's British Minstrels stressed their musical abilities and their refined costumes and sets. Only the endmen wore blackface, and the troupe did no base comedy. George Primrose and William H. West adopted Hague's idea and sparked a new trend in minstrelsy.

What a boring existence local Victorians must have had. That?s what I used to think, before I started delving into the past.

Let?s see what was on offer in January 1891. What about nightly performances at the Queen?s Opera House in Workington. For one week, beginning January 19 the world-famous Sam Hague?s Minstrels were appearing.

Never heard of him? Few people have nowadays but in the 19th century he was a big name in popular entertainment. He started as a clog dancer. He went to America in 1850 and, according to some, was responsible for introducing our transatlantic cousins to English clog dancing. He returned to England around 1866, bringing a 10 strong troupe of coloured dancers, which he called Sam Hague?s Slave Troupe of Georgia Minstrels.

The American Civil War had just ended and some of his dancers had been slaves. His original group broke up and by the time he came to Workington, he was probably employing an all-white group.

So could Workington support a theatre opening nightly for a week? Probably not, but then it didn?t have to.

People came in from the towns and villages to go the Opera House.

They came on the train. From Maryport, Cockermouth and Whitehaven. Just like we can today? I wish! But in 1891, special late trains were laid on, leaving Workington at 11pm.

You are in The Pierrotters

The Pierrotters
They do like to be beside the Seaside

Blackpool's name spells magic, holidays and the seaside, and entertainment. There have always been big shows aplenty, but the Pierrots, along with Punch & Judy, were the embodiment of small theatre, performing alfresco and on the piers. Black-faced Pierrots at Blackpool were first seen on the beach at Starr Gate in the 1890s, and Uncle Tom's Cabin at Bispham was a home for minstrelsy until it fell into the sea. There were troupes at Raikes Hall Gardens and, around 1900, the White Coons (white-faced Pierrot entertainers) were formed, on a pitch at Harrowside. Their successors in Blackpool included Sam Hague's Minstrels at the Indian Theatre on North Pier, Bobby Alandale's Premier Pierrots, Wylie-Tate's Super Pierrots, and Tom Vernon's Royal Pierrots on Central Pier.

These troupes were both contemporary and anarchic, family fun with a topicality born of the fact that all shows were live! The seaside Pierrot troupes were public property and were expected to fulfil certain expectations - they had to be smart, charming and available at all times. They were expected to perform whenever the management required (up to five times a day), in all weathers (if wet under the pier!) and certainly not to greet girlfriends or loved ones in public. They were the Boyzone and Take That and of their age!

Subject: RE: Ellen (Marks) Pulling - B: 1856- 1934

hello, how interesting - I knew James William Lawton was a singer as my aunt Marjorie who is now in her nineties is his step-grandchild - Annie Vivian (Pulling)1892 was her mum. A number of Ellen's girls were in the chorus line in Liverpool - no detials unfortunately but son William Lawton apparently went on to be a soldier and lived in Manchester with a Spanish? wife, Florence Edith Lawton had a long standing extra marital affair with a dentist somewhere in the south of england where he paid for a house she lived in and family rumour was that she died either having an abortion or giving birth, all very sad as marjorie loved her and said she sparkled.

The family moved on to have a newsagents shop 108 Gidlow road, Walton West Derby. I'm sorry I don't know much about james more than that really other than him being born in yorkshire but I'd love it if you did and could fill in some gaps - my email is fairysharp@aol.com - I've taken a break from the ancestry subscription at the moment it was beginning to rule my life !! - Best Wishes - Jenny

Auntie Marjorie moved to Scotland last year (2009) from Crosby where she lived most of her adult life - gone to live with daughter, Vivian and a bit frail and forgetful these days.

I have a gap from 1911 - 1919 on the whereabouts of Ellen and James, from the 1911 census the next thing I have is when Ellen was listed as a widow / housekeeper on an incoming ship to liverpool from New York and travelling with Florence who was listed as theatrical - another daughter Lydia emigrated there after marrying Emlyn Richards - address 228 Fisher Avenue, Richmond in 1920. For many years Ellen went back and forth from America to visit her but died while living with Annie - Marjories mother - What a horrible thing to happen to james, hope they hadn't had a row you'd never forgive yourself
