Jasper HODKIN, No age given. Resident of Boston Ravine (Grass Valley) Occupation: Miner. Notes: "Shot by Schofield"

The Grass Valley Daily Union Friday Morning July 26, 1867

SHOOTING AFFAIR, - A difficulty occurred yesterday morning about 9 0?clock, just out of Boston Ravine, on the road leading to Ophir Hill, between James Schofield and Jasper Hodkin, in which the latter was shot by the former, and although death was not resulted up to the present writing, (4 o?clock Thursday afternoon,) there is little or no doubt that Hodkin?s wound will terminate fatally.

As there has been no examination yet, and as no witnesses to the affair have thus far turned up, we can only give the defendant?s statements, and this we give merely on heresay. This explanation we deem necessary before giving even the rumored version of the unfortunate occurrence; and of course, as in all such cases, the account should be taken for simply what it is worth.

The story as we have heard it is this: Hodkin and Schofield, who are brothers-in-law, live on opposite sides of the road leading out of Boston Ravine. Schofield is building a house on his lot, and in hauling material for the building for the building he has been driving close to Hodkin?s premises, and in doing so recently some angry words were exchanged between the parties. Schofield, we believe, claimed that it was necessary to drive close to the north side of the road, in order to make the turn on his premises. Some rocks or boulders have lately been piled up in front of Hodkins?s premises, and Schofield yesterday morning in hauling a load of building material to his place got off his wagon on reaching the pile of rock and commenced removing the obstacles. Hodkin came out and a quarrel ensued, in which, according to the reported version of the affair by Schofield, S. fired two shots from a pistol, to frighten Hodkin away. Hodkin followed Schofield to the rear of his wagon, a clinch and scuffle followed, and in it Hodkin was shot.

As already stated, the parties are brothers-in-law, Schofield?s wife, from whom he is separated, being a sister of Hodkin. Hodkin is a man of family, having a wife and two children. Schofield has lived here a number of years, and at times has so acted as to leave the general impression that his mental condition was anything but sound. He was yesterday taken to Nevada (City) and confined in the county jail, to await legal examination. The affair is a sad one at best, and public opinion ought to be suspended until the facts in the case have been brought out through a legal channel.

Shot by his brother-in-law, James Schofield, who was later acquitted of murder (NT)(NT is Nevada Daily Transcript newspaper) (Nevada City) - * California, Voter Registers, 1866-1898, actually a record of deaths, give Jasper a birth year of 1831, age 37.

John Crowther 1822-1890

... John became a shoemaker. On 14 April 1843 at St. Chad's in Rochdale [UK] he married Ruth Fielden, daughter of Joshua and Hannah. They settled at Dobroyd and by 1848 had two children, Philip and George. On 2nd April 1848, with his wife pregnant for a third time, John left home for America. He said he was going to find a better life for the family, and promised he would either send for them or return within a year. Their daughter Hannah was born during this year.

John did write for a while, and at one time he sent some money to Ruth and asked her to join him. he then wrote again telling her not to go. That was the last time she heard from him.

Meanwhile, John changed his name to John Philip Crother, went through a bigamous marriage to Maria Hodkin from Derbyshire in 1852 and lived first in Michigan, then New York, and then settled in Nemaha, Nebraska. He worked as a boot, shoe and harness maker and raised five more children. A sixth child, Emma, died in 1860 aged 4. John was clearly successful in business judging by the value of his real and personal estate as declared on the 1870 census return - a total of $5,500. His children were William Henry (1852), Priscilla Jane (1859), John Edwin (1861), Anna Bertha (1863) and Oliver Charles (1873).
John' s granddaughter Elizabeth recalls that he was so homesick that he would play "Rule Britannia" on his flute with tears streaming down his face. He threw himself in to local politics, becoming a J.P. in 1859. A gazetteer of the time records:

"When he came to Nemaha City, not one hundred acres of land were broken in the precinct, it being a sort of a bubble town, populated by claim-holders who were soon after compelled to move their frail shanties, then composing Nemaha City, out upon their claims, which operation laid the foundation for the present prosperity of Nemaha. Mr. C. has been Justice of the Peace most of the time since 1859; was in the Territorial House of 1861-62-63. He has been a Republican ever since the party was organized. He and his family are members of the Episcopal Church. No pioneer of Nemaha County is more familiar with its history, or has taken more pride in its progress, than has Squire Crother".

Samuel Hodkin and his wife Mary lived in Lowell/Dracut area of Massachusettes where their only child George was born on 28 April 1844. After his birth they settled in Temple, New Hampshire on a Farm with what appeared to be joint ownership of a property with George Derbyshire, Mary's Father. In the 1880 US Census there is a neighbouring Farmer named Thomas Derbyshire living in close proximity to Samuel Hodkin, possibly a son of George Derbyshire.

Cannot place this William Hodkin who according to the IGI Baptism Records was Christened at Taddington Church on the 11th May 1845 - After the death of father George Hodkin in 1840 and possibly after his mother Hannah had emigrated to the USA. - There is no trace of this William in the 1841 Census either. But it is quite possible there was another William born to George & Hannah - after the Death of their other son William in 1828.- This William obviously needs to researched much further.

ELIZABETH HOLDEN (1858-1933)

On the death of my Mother (Arechea Nicholls) on December 24th 1998 and the subsequent dispersal of her estate. I happened to come across a small Diary from 1933 that had been kept by my late Father (Fred Lawton). Although there had not been many entries made in the Diary, one that caught my attention was that dated January 21st. 1933, which noted that 'Aunt Lizzie' had died, and on the 24th. January 1933 was buried in Mossley Cemetery.

As I had no inclination as to whom he was referring, I decided to check the Burial Records for Mossley Cemetery that are kept at the Dukinfield Crematorium Offices. On researching the particular date and entry in the Burial Register, I came across an entry on Page 88. Folio No. 6641 for an ELIZABETH HOLDEN (Single Woman) aged 74 years, who died at 24 Archer Street, Mossley; on 21st. January 1933 and who was interred in Grave No. 2410 in Mossley Municipal Cemetery on the 24th January 1933:

Grave No. 2410 was classified in the Burial Registry as being " Full " as there were Five previous deceased already registered in the plot, as following:.....

Page 7. Folio; 136. Lucy Ann Brierley. 1 year. Buried. 21st April 1880.
Page 10. Folio; 192. Mary Elizabeth Brierley. 8 mth. Buried. 29th January 1881.
Page 93. Folio; 1840. Hannah (Hodkin) Ashworth. 76 Yrs. Buried. 1st May 1895.
Page ? . Folio; 5066. Mary Ellen Brierley. 68 Yrs. Buried. 19th April. 1920.
Page 88 Folio; 6641. Elizabeth Holden. 74 Yrs. Buried. 26th January 1933.

From the above occupants, the questions arise;

Who was Hannah Ashworth and what relation was she to the Brierley's ?. - This is obviously Hannah (Hodkin) Ashworth, daughter of George & Hannah Hodkin of Blackwell in Derbyshire, and wife of William Ashworth of Flash Cottages in Knowls Lane, Hartshead, mother of Mary Ellen(Ashworth) Brierley.

If Elizabeth Holden was my Fathers true "Auntie", that would mean she was the sister of Mary Ellen Brierley. As Elizabeth Holden was a Spinster, so she would have retained her "Maiden Name".

Further to researching the Grave details, I obtained a copy of Elizabeth Holden's Death Certificate from Dukinfield Registry Office; Certificate No.148 for 1933 confirms that Elizabeth died at 24 Archer Street, Mossley, and states that Thomas Lawton (My Grandfather) was present at her Death. The description gives her as a Spinster whose occupation was a Cotton Speed Tenter and that she was the Daughter of Benjamin Holden (Painter) of Rochdale, deceased. Registered; 21/1/1933.

Elizabeth Holden was born at 59 Bury Rd, Spotland, Rochdale. Lancashire on 16th September 1858, daughter of Benjamin Holden & Maria Dews. (Rochdale Birth Register No. 1858-SN/14/42).

Further to the above. I researched the 1881 UK Census Returns and found an Elizabeth Holden residing with James Brierly and Family at Queen Street. Mossley. Ashton-under-lyne. Lancs.

Who was Sarah Jane Holden aged 45 ???? - This record turned out to be a Transcription Error and it was Sarah Jane Hodkin (Orphaned daughter of George Hodkin of Hartshead)

As yet I have been unable to find any relationship between Elizabeth Holden and either the Brierley or Ashworth family.

My late father John Ernest (1963-2009) had become a dedicated
amateur genealogist; but until retiring from teaching my brothers and offspring had no time etc. Our GREAT grandfather was Henry Holden/married to Maria Dewest? I am wondering as I read about your mother, Arachnea Lawton, whether she is the mysterious person my Dad sent a friend to find out if she was still alive.. as the Aunt Lizzie you mention would have been our GREAT Aunt. (For the record, a former Supreme Justice over there, Michael Holden, would be Benjamin Holdens great grandson..(son HENRY emigrated mysteriouslu in 1893 or so)..): with whom has been a great mystery: a woman named Charlotte Taylor.
He and wife Eva (Mitchell) had 11 siblings: my Dad was the last. SO; Question on this great site: Sarah seems to be the mystery name. As I the novice see this, Benjamin , son of Sarah, a) does not seem to have a named father and
b) in the 1841-51 census, seems to have become nephew of SUSANNAH Holden (???) or ??
If you are interested, i will send you a copy of the work in progress Family Tree my Dad had assembled. THANKS for a great night adding to the tree for my Dad and the numerous relatives who miss him.. Better than the Super Bowl!

I had an interesting response from Mrs Diane Hickman, a genealogist who had assisted my Dad with postings in 2008 (Feb 6, actually, on Rootsweb and Family Tree re his grandfather Benjamin ..(b/1829: Sarah Holden.. where it stops. I have just received the name of the church were Benjamin was baptized, WHICH down the line may yield information as to her own parentage etc, and where she was buried .
(I am learning the relationship between Sarah and Sally as I did discover the name Sarah as one of the 11 or so offspring of a Holden), which is (as well as the Australian car!) a very frequent New England name as of the late 1700s.

I understand from this last posting that,Benjamin s mother and father may have split, but Lizzie s brother Henry (our paternal grandfather)..was the only one in the family who emigrated to Canada in late 1880s after his father Benjamin passed away in 1882 ; which is about the same time your "Aunt Lizzie" s name starts appearing in the census forms..

However, in going through this.. the names Marshall, Greenwood etc do keep being interesting, and as you noted, the Brierley ??
I certainly do know the name Todmorden now...and we had been meaning to try to get to the Rochdale cemetery where Maria Dewes was buried in 1900.
I am awaiting some e mails from a cousin who has just taken up research again on our grandmother (Mitchells) side..
re a Brian Hanlon and THEIR emigration to Montreal..
I DO have by the way the last known addresses of some Holden descendants in England: the family of John etc.

Dad was the last survivor of Henry s 10 offspring;
John, Henry, William, Edward, Mina, Benjamin, Pearl, Eva, (Henry Osborne).
Grace , and Eva.,

- NOTES: On 'Menadew Farm at St. Cleer. - There appears to be many different pronounciations in the name of this Farm. - Namely: MENARIDDEW, MENADUE, MENNADEW, & MENADEW - It would be worth trying to locate the position of the Farm close to St.Cleer and verify the correct name from historic documents.

From the Voters List below it would appear that FRANCIS HENDER may have been to owner of MENADUE and that John Hooper and Family may have only been tenants of the house and land.

- NOTES: - On 1841 Census about John William Hooper - [1815-1861]

It would appear that the records in the 1841 Census pose more questions than they answer, but the main fact is that the 1841 Census seems to verify that John Hooper did indeed have a second name of 'William' albiet the other way around as the attached note states. (This would account for him being named William in the Newspaper article on his untimely death by suicide in 1861) - However! There appears a transcription error in the fact that there was no wife living with John Hooper at Menariddew Farm in 1841 (or the age of Ann is an error and should be 22) and also a child John Hooper aged 1 year, apparently before John Hooper and Ann Kelly married in 1843. There is also a Thomas Hooper living in close proximity who could well be John Hoopers brother. (Verify).

John Willm Hooper,22,,Herdman, Born: In county, - Forenames could be the other way round

1861 Census - Aged 46 (Farmer) at Mennadew Farm, St. Cleer, Cornwall.

Could have had a sister Susan who bore an illegitimate child 'Harriot' in 1838

Tragic Suicide at Menadue Farm in the Parish of St. Cleer.

On Wednesday morning last, Mr William Hooper, who occupies Menadue Farm, in the Parish of St Cleer, committed suicide by hanging himself in a hayloft over one of the stables of the farm. It appears that Hooper had not been well for the last two years- suffering from mental depression which has caused his family a great deal of anxiety. Nothing manifested itself more than usual on this morning, as he got up and attended to his cattle as he was accustomed to do. His eldest son, who had been away with a horse and cart during the forenoon, and returned about 12 o'clock and having taken to the stable and attended to it, called a younger brother, a lad of about 14 years of age, to put it in the field. When the lad came to the door of the stable he looked up in the loft and saw his father hanging. He called is brother's attention to it, who immediately gave an alarm, and some men who were working about 40 yards from the stable ran in and cut him down, but life was quite extinct. He was in a kneeling position, his neck not being more than three feet six inches from the floor. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his untimely end.

I am sorry that we cannot help you more in tracking down John Hooper. Thank you, Claire Morgan (Registrar)

(Note: This William Hooper has been positively identified by Liskeard BMD Registrar from archive records as the John William Hooper who died 18th September 1861 and was buried 25th September 1861 in St, Cleer Churchyard. An inquest was held into the circumstances of his death, and no immediate family names appear on the Death Certificate)
