mother: Jinks, Jane (Jinny) (1850 - 1922)
- Lived for a time at No.16 Hazelwood Road .Walthamstow

- NOTES: On Clarice Broad.

She was the youngest of the five girls. She was not exactly pretty, but very good looking and attractive, with smokey dark curly hair. She was bubbly, vivacious, a bit of a devil, and we were brought up on tales of Aunt Clarice's wild doings.

She worked as a waitress in the restaurant at Crewe Railway station - a terrible place in those days, where the rats jumped out from under the chairs whan patrons sat down to eat. There were tales told of her and the other girls picking up fellows, going off to Blackpool and not getting back home till the early hours of the morning.

From Crewe she moved to Preston railway station, then on to Euston station in London - another terrible place. It was there that she met Uncle Alex (John Alexander Nicholls), who was the cashier in the restaurant carriage on the London to Glasgow Express (The Flying Scotsman).

We children used to stand at the end of Eva Street (Elworth. Sandbach.) to wave at him when the express was going by and he used to wave back at us. Clarice died in her thirties. When she was so ill and obviously dying, she used to say "There's nothing to worry about. I'm going to live forever. Alex won't let me die. But of course that wasn't the case.

Clarice Broad was buried in Sandbach Church Cemetery in the family grave along with her Father Ralph Broad and brother Arthur.

Housewife

Residence - [date: 1919] [place: No.1 Park Avenue, Moss Side, Manchester.]

- I was born and brought up in Park Avenue and lived there from late 1950s to late 1980s and No1 is still there to this day. (2011)

The avenue changed its name to Smalldale Avenue I think in the late 1970s due to a lot of postal delivery confusion with other similar addresses in the locality ie. Park Drive, Park Road, Parkside Road, and also another Park Avenue in a neighbouring borough. This was despite none of the other addresses having a park directly in front of them!

Smalldale was chosen from a ballot of suggestions from residents in the avenue with the name put forward by a Miss Scott who lived at No 4 and originated from the area of Smalldale in Derbyshire. The avenue consists of 33 terraced houses in two blocks and they overlook Alexandra Park which has an area of approx 65 acres of laid out parkland. Just across from the houses and inside the park boundary were 2 crown bowling green’s so you can imagine the quality of the area up till about 30 years ago.

From what I understand the houses were originally built circa 1912 and were occupied at that time by what can be best described as blue collar workers solicitors clerks, secretarial, admin, bank workers, accountants etc. There were a number of small business owners who also lived in the avenue.

They were large houses and consisted of an entrance hall, front room parlour, rear living room, kitchen and integral outhouse, 3 bedrooms, internal bathroom and toilet which was not the norm, and a second floor attic bedroom. At that time the houses were located on the outer edge of Manchester with open country side at the other end of the avenue. This changed very quickly from the mid 1920s with massive expansion of the city of Manchester

You are absolutely correct about the previous status of Moss Side. This area was certainly the place to live and the adjacent area of Whalley Range was where the industrialists and cotton merchants lived. Their houses were mansions of the day with coach houses and livery stables. These are still visible from Park Avenue on the other side of the park but the merchants are long gone.

From the 1950s onwards the area had a strong make up of Irish, Polish, and Italians and retained a very strong all round community spirit.

The area declined in the late 1960s due to a combination of property reaching the end of its shelf life, people with long standing roots leaving to seek better quality housing, redevelopment etc. and noticeable emigration to Australia on the assisted passage scheme. The area of Moss Side was substantially demolished and redeveloped in the late 1970s but Park Avenue was one of only two streets to be left insitu as it was considered to be too good for demolition

As there are only 33 houses we knew everyone who lived in Park Avenue and since childhood I clearly recall an elderly couple who lived at No 1 Park Avenue. The lady was petite and the gentleman had rimless spectacles and when either entering or leaving the avenue you would nearly always meet them at their property and say hello or run an errand to the local shop. I understood that they lived at that house for many years long before I came along and were there up till the 70s when I think they passed away.

Could these be related to you as the name Lawson or Lawton is somewhere at the back of my mind ?.

If you wish to look at a photograph of the house type M16 7JH ( post code) into Google and this will take you to a map of the area and avenue. By drilling down you can get to street scene level and view the front of the house and surrounding area. The house is a gable ended property, painted red brickwork, and I think possibly with a plastic bag on the door step. Also if you type Moss Side – a set on Flickr into Google it will take you to Manchester Archive photos. Scroll down to the 4th row and the central photo is of Philbins corner shop which was adjacent to No 1 Park Avenue. This is now demolished and was located in the grassed area shown on the above street scene.

mother: Jinks, Jane (Jinny) (1850 - 1922)
- BROAD, Edith. - Born: Sandbach, Cheshire East. - 1870-SA/24/36

- NOTES: On Aunt Edith Broad.

Edith was the eldest of the five girls. She went into service when she was 13 and when I (Edna Lysett) knew her she had married Uncle Will, who was eight years younger than her. He was a stonemason working in the slate quarries on Honister Pass in Borrowdale, Cumbria. The quarries are like huge caverns with steep sides and the men work on shelves on the cliff wall.

The family lived in a tiny cottage (which is still there 1999) in Stonethwaite, Borrowdale, with no running water, no drains, no heat or light except from a paraffin stove. She was an exceptionally kind-hearted person. One winter she brought a neighbours 14 year old daughter to Blackpool to have a holiday in my mothers (Lena Broad) boarding house. (Kent Street, Blackpool) The girl had consumption and died soon after. The next winter Aunt Edith herself had consumption and we (Lena & Edna) went to Stonethwaite to look after her until she died.

(Note: Visit to Stonethwaite & Borrowdale by Trevor & Irene in 1999 failed to discover anything about Edith or William)

Broad, Helena Broad or Eleanor Isabel (1863 - 1926) - female
b. 15 APR 1863 in Bradwall Road, Sandbach, Cheshire.
d. JUL_SEP 1926 in Barton-upon-Irwell, Lancashire.

- BROAD, Helena. - Born: Sandbach, Cheshire East. - 1863-SA/17/78

Very strange information on this Helena - I can find her Birth registered in the NSO records but not her marriage....there is an Eleanor Isabel Broad that married Nehemiah Norris in September 1891 at Congleton (Sandbach) - 1891 - BROAD Eleanor I - NORRIS, Nehemiah - Sandbach, St Mary - Cheshire East - 1891 - 1080/4/56 - But I have checked all the ONS Birth Statistics for "ELEANOR ISABEL" and cannot find one with the surname 'Broad' - So I am assuming that HELENA & ELEANOR are one and the same, as all dates and places match. I still cannot find any trace of this HELENA in the 1891 Census, but will keep trying.

- In the 1841 Census I have discovered a Mary Broad (25) with a Jane Broad (20) and Ann Broad (15) all at Market Street in Manchester. Which seems to follow the movement of these sisters and indicate I may be on the right track with regards their marriages.

Cannot be sure that this is my Jane Broad from Sanbach, but there was also a John Broad married earlier in the year at Manchester Cathedral in January 1849, which could have been Jane's elder borther.

- Easy to get confused with the numerous 'John Broad's' that lived in and around Sandbach between 1818 and 1825.

Could this be John BROAD from Sandbach, as a Jane BROAD was also married at Manchester Cathedral in September of the same year, perhaps brother and sister.

- NOTES: On Aunt Lena Broad.

She was the only blonde girl and very attractive. Aunt Sylvia was always very jealous of her. It began one day when when their father, Ralph, was standing at the door talking to a friend. Lena came running up the street with ice skates in her hand and her yellow hair streaming out behind her. Ralph said to the friend, " Ah, this is the one I wanted you to see. Aunt Sylvia was in the house and heard him. What made it worse was that Lena was regarded as the delicate one, thus she didn't go into service. She stopped at home and did sewing. There was a shoe factory near-by and they used to collect highleg boots with rows of buttons. They sewed on the buttons for one shilling a thousand.

Lena Broad married Robert Lycett and had two children, Gerald and myself (Edna). My father died when I was two years old and my mother had a hard time scaping a living. I believe it was Aunt Sylvia who helped us set up in a Boarding House in Kent Road, Blackpool. We took in holiday-makers during the summer and in winter let out rooms to families. At the beginning of the 1914-18 war my mother went bankrupt. There were no more holiday-makers as the houses were requisitioned for the troops.

Could this be my Mary BROAD of Sandbach, who married aged 17 years at Manchester Cathedral, very doubtful, but it seems a coincidence that siblings John & Jane BROAD may also have married at Manchester Cathedral in 1849

Census - [date: 1841] [place: The Common, Sandbach, Cheshire.]

- My g.g.g.grand father is Ralph Broad (~1791 - 1852) and, before reading your message, I too had not got information about him from the 1841 census, although I had tried previously. I had another go, searching for his son James (1820 - 1892) and quickly found both James and what I think is Ralph (there is Ra and then a sqiggle). Anyhow, they were living in The Commons, Sandbach (this is a triangular piece of common land - now a carpark in the middle of Sandbach. The details of the entry are 1841 Census Ref HO 107 / 122 / 11 (enumerator schedule page 15) folio 12 in Sandbach district 7.

Living in the same building are Frances Ras[t?]berry aged 20, a widow (nee Broad) along with her daughters Sarah, Mary and Ann.

Frances (Fanny) had married William Rasberry in 1834 but he had died of Typhus fever in 1840. She was to re-marry to Benjamin Bullock with whom she had a large family.

- Ann Rasberry (1840 - 1905) married William Birchenough (1840 - 1878) in 1858 and these are my great grand parents.

Living next door but one before is the family of John Birchenougn (Shoemaker) his wife Sarah and fout children - Possibly relatives of deceased wife Sarah (Birchenough) Broad.

Census - [date: 1881] [place: Try No.5 Brewer Street, off Port Street, Manchester]

- Proving extremely difficult to find this Family Group in the 1881 Census

- After extensive searching using many alternatives, I still cannot locate this family in the 1881 Census - However! - They must have been living in the Ancoats area of Manchester, as in 1877 a Daughter Minnie Spears was born at Ancoats wo only survived a few day's by all accounts. Then in 1880 another Daughter Maud Spears was aslo born at Ancoats, and she too, only survived a few day's - Then in the October/December quarter of 1882 a Daughter Gertrude was boen at Manchester Central - Which more or less confirms that the Family remained domiciled in Manchester for around Ten Years.

I have spent another two or three hours searching for this family in and around their last know locations (record by record) and still cannot locate them in the 1881 Census - It could well be that some of the records for Manchester were lost or destroyed, as I cannot find some locations in and around Central Manchester, Ancoats or Openshaw....so I am reluctantly giving up on this task, and moving on to other more important issues. I have searched Ancestry Records for hours, trying to find this ARETIA BROWNE in the 1841 Census, without any success. Having tried all types of connotations and abreviations I still cannot locate her or her family in 1841.

There was an Aretia Stockdill born at Dewsbury, Yorkshire in Jan_Mar 1844 - the year that Richard Stockdill and Aretia Browne married in London....such an unusual christian name indicates that there has to be some connection, maybe Aretia Stockdill B: 1844 was the illigitimate child of Richard & Aretia who then married later in 1844. This child Aretia was married in 1862 in Dewsbury, Yorks: ( Marriages Jul_Sep 1862 - Stockdill, Aretia - Married @ Dewsbury - 1862-Sep-9b/720 to either a Joseph Bedford or a John Rhodes. - There was also an Aretia Stockdill who died at Lambeth, London, aged 69 years in the Jul_Sep qtr 1891 which equates to our Aretia (Browne) Stockdill

- NOTES: - On 1841 England Census about Aretia Browne

- This Aretia Browne must have spent some time in Yorkshire around 1841 to 1844, as she obniously met and later married Richard Stockdill from Morley, son of John Stockdill and Hannah ? ,. Aretia Browne must have made an impression upon her future parents-in-law, as they named a subsequent daughter born in 1844 ARETIA STOCKDILL, or could she have been the daughter of Richard Stockdill & Aretia Browne??
