Jinny was blinded in middle age by a paraffin lamp exploding

Jinny Jinks (Grandma Broad)

Jinny was blinded when a paraffin lamp exploded in her face. She was middle aged, but I'm not sure exactly how old she was when it happened. Although when I knew her she was totally blind, she used to help a lot around the house. She could thread a needle 7 cotton, make her own bodices and do mending. She could tell the colours of the threads when sewing, by feeling the reel of cotton, I don't know how. She would knit all our stockings but couldn't turn the heel, Bertha had to do that. But the stockings - you know those long black stockings that girls used to wear - were always too short and they slipped out of the garters. When I (Lena) stayed there she used to put me to dust the house. Well, I didn't know what dusting was, but Jinny came around after me with her hands, she could feel the dust. The Victorian table had bulbous legs and she felt around where I hadn't dusted and shouted, " You idle young madam!, You idle young madam!.

NOTES: - On the Kelly's of St. Clether

Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Jane Kelly (nee Edwards). She was baptised on the 4th January 1817 at St. Clether.

In 1841 Elizabeth Kelly was living at Vicarage House, St. Cleer, as a female servant for John Jope, a 90 year old Clergyman. She married Walter Bowhay, baptised 29th Sept. 1816 at Tresmeer, his mother was called Elizabeth. In 1845, Elizabeth Bowhay their daughter was born. - By 1851, they were living at Treneath, St. Cleer. Elizabeth was 33 and her daughter is age 6, Walter is not at home. In the 1851 census the name is given as BOWEY.

By 1861 they are all at home at Treneath Cottage and Walter is stated as a farmer of 8 acres and a Local Methodist Preacher. They were both 44 years old. On the 10th May 1866, she was a witness at the marriage of Thomas Collins her nephew and Elizabeth Budge Maunder in Truro, or was it her daughter, Elizabeth Bowhay who would have been 21. This couple are my G/Grandparents. Later that year in 1866 her daughter Elizabeth married William Roberts (Sept. Liskeard 5c 115). Mary Roberts her granddaughter was born in 1868 (March 1868 Liskeard 5c 75).

By 1871 she was living at St. Cleer with her husband Walter and niece Elizabeth Collins. Walter was still a farmer of 8 acres. Walter was in attendance at the death of his brother-in-law William Collins (my G/Grandfather) who died on the 1st December 1875, he registered the death on the 4th of that month.

In 1881, Walter and Elizabeth, both 64 were still farming the 8 acres and were still living at Treneeth Cottage, St. Cleer. With them was their grand daughter, Mary Elizabeth Roberts, age 13, who was a scholar. Walter was also in attendance at the death of his sister-in-law, Jane Collins (my G/Grandmother) on the 19th August 1886 and registered the death on the 20th August. Walter himself died two years later, age 71, in 1888 (June Liskeard 5c 39). Elizabeth was living at Winsor in 1891 and her grand daughter Mary E. Roberts now 23 was her housekeeper. Her niece Elizabeth Collins was also living at Winsor in 1891 although not the same house.

In 1891, Elizabeth (Kelly) Bowey is a Widow aged 74 (Living on her own means) with Housekeeper & Spinster G/Daughter Mary Elizabeth Roberts (24) - Living next door to her is her Widowed Sister Ann (Kelly) Hooper aged 76 (Living on her own means) with her Batchelor Son John Hooper aged 40 (Drapers Assistant)

By 1901 Elizabeth was 84 and still in St. Cleer but was now living at Well Park. She was living on her own means and her grand daughter Polly Roberts who was now 33 was still living with her. Thomas Collins got word on the 13th February 1907 that his aunt in St. Cleer had died. She was an elderly aunt. It was Elizabeth Bowhay, she was 90 when she died. (BMD March 1907 age 90, Liskeard 5c 43)

Mary Elizabeth Roberts is Polly Roberts, my grandfather's cousin mentioned in his diaries. It appears that Walter Bowhay seemed to attend to most of the deaths in his family as you mentioned he was also present at his nephews death. Probably because he was a preacher.

I have very little on Ann Kelly but it seems she had a tragic life. I have found no marriage so far for her and up until I e-mailed you I thought she may have died in 1850. Anyway, see what you make of Elizabeth and let me know whether you think it is right.

Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Hilary.
