Death of Mr. Thomas Lawton - 5th November 1941

Mossley has lost one of its most popular and gifted vocalists by the death of Mr. Thomas Lawton of 24 Archer Street, Mossley. Mr. Lawton died on Wednesday 5th. November of last week, and was buried at Mossley Cemetery on Saturday 15th. November. He had a long illness and leaves a Widow, two sons and four daughters. He was 66 years of age.

Mr. Lawton's death recalls a lifelong association with music. An enthusiastic member of the old Mossley Vocal Society, and also one of the founders and later President of the present Vocal Society. Mr. Lawton's popularity throughout the district as a Bass Vocalist grew with each succeeding year of his musical career.

For over forty years he was a devoted member of the choir at Market Place Methodists Chapel, and gave valuable assistance at many of the more important services. During his later years he became a trustee of the church.

Although an oratorio of no small merit, Mr. Lawton was perhaps best known as a ballad vocalist. No one could hear his renderings of such popular songs as 'Friend o' Mine', 'Mighty Deep', 'Tommy Lad', etc; without being moved and impressed, while it was often said that the latter song might have been written by himself.

In the days of the Cross, and other musical competitions, Mr. Lawton figured again and again as the best singer for miles around, and along with other competitors provided many a Saturday entertainment for thousands of Manchester people.

An Appreciation

"Although well known in many of the neighbouring towns, there were quite a number of people," writes our correspondent, "who held the view that had he taken the opportunities which came his way, Mr. Lawton would have been more successful and made a name for himself in the singing world. But his tastes were simple, and he preferred a quiet family life to the more tempting offers of a professional singer."

A former acquaintance of his who often described himself as a "Tom Lawton fan", once said: "What a pity that this fine, resonant bass voice should be practically wasted in a small country place like Mossley, when it might have brought him fame and fortune in our larger cities and towns.

"He sang at many charitable concerts and was keenly interested in any musical venture. Before his death he was a well known figure in the town and many people had a great regard and respect for him."

"His passing will be mourned over a wide area. But his friends have the satisfaction of knowing, that in his day, he had a great talent which he developed to the full, and which he shared with all who heard him. So it is in this spirit that they will find consolation in the loss of a great friend and singer."

I'm looking for information on William LAWTON son of James and Esther LAWTON, DOB 3/26/1811, married to Hanna HOLDROYD. They had two daughters born in England, Lavinia LAWTON and Emma LAWTON, (twins)DOB 12/17/1833. Lavinia LAWTON was christened at Holy Trinity Almondbury Yorkshire, England. Can find no record for Emma. William and Hanna had 4 more children all born in US. They came to American sometime before 1839, settled in Baltimore County, Maryland, then Harford County, Maryland. Any information would be great. My G-G-Grandmother is Lavinia LAWTON. e-mail address klm5249@aol.com

William Lawton, married Hannah Holroyd on the 23rd September 1832 at All Hallows Church, Meltham, Just two months before the birth of their first child Lavinia on 12th December 1832.

This William Lawton must have preceded his wife and children by emigrating to the USA about 1840-41 to establish a job and living there, before his wife Anna and children joined him, emigrating themselves in 1842. In the 1841 UK Census Anna and children are still at Crosland Bank, Meltham, Almondbury, Yorkshire. They emigrated from Liverpool on the Ship "Siddons" - Master: Cobb - Bound for New York - 13th June 1842 arriving in New York on the 21st July 1842.

Having searched exhaustingly through Passenger Lists and Arrivals and also the 1840 United States Federal Census, I cannot find any trace of this William Lawton, so I stongly suspect that he may have travelled to the USA in 1841, consequently he is not to found in either the US 1840 Census or the UK 1841 Census.

----------child: Lawton, Olive (1899 - 1983)
Lawton, William Alfred (1921 - ) - male
b. APR_JUN 1921 in West Derby, Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Lawton, William Henry (1846 - 1899) - male
b. JAN_MAR 1846 in Delph Dist; Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
d. OCT_DEC 1899 in Stockport Road, Roughtown, Mossley

father: Lawton, Samuel (1823 - 1879)
mother: Moss, Jane (1821 - )
- Son of Samuel Lawton and Jane Moss - This William Henry Lawton, wife Betty Lawton together with several of their children are buried in the Grave adjoining that of my GGrandfather James Lawton at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church, New Graveyard, which makes me suspect they are somehow related to my 'Lawton' family.

- Betty's 1st Child "Mary Ann" was born in 1865 - Then there is a 5 year break between the next child, which seem's unusual - Could there have been a child or children born in that 5 years break. - Verify!

Dovina's details are: (She's Davina on her Birth Certificate) Born: 11th March 1841, Robert Street (London Road), Manchester.
Daughter of William Lindsay and Joan Read - Baptised: September 7th 1842, Manchester Cathedral - Died: September 13th 1886, 13 Vance Street, Openshaw.

Children of Jonathan and Dovina:

Mary Janet Brierley. Born 25th August 1873, York Street, Gorton. Died: Oct_Dec 1873

James William Brierley, Born abt 1876. Died 16th December 1933, Withington.
Married Selina Finch, 22nd August 1900 St. Clements, Openshaw

Minnie Brierley. Born Jun Quarter 1877, Chorlton RD

There is no entry for a James William Brierley born in the Chorlton RD around 1876.
There is one born in Clitheroe, and a few plain James born around Manchester. When I can justify the expense I'll at least try and
eliminate some of these entries.

I'm awaiting a Marriage Certificate for a Minnie Brierley married in
Chorlton RD in 1905.

James and Selina had two children:

Arthur Brierley. Born October 11th 1901, 136 Edge Lane, Droylsden. Died
April 26th 1954, Manchester. Married Doris Heap, St Georges Abbey Hey,
22nd
August 1925 (My grandparents)

Elsie Brierley. Born 29th May 1909, Died August 30th 1974, Marple,
Cheshire.
Married Frank Barclay September 6th 1930, Saint Clements Openshaw.

Marriage Certificate shows Jonathan's occupation as Grocer, father Joseph's occupation is given as Builder. Both the couple have their address simply as "Gorton". Their local parish Church of St. Thomas had recently collapsed in a heap and it's replacement would not open until 1871. This probably explains when they had to go into town to get hitched.
